CATHOLIC PORTSMOUTH
C ATHOLIC P ORTSMOUTH Catholic Parishes and Schools in Partnership in the City of Portsmouth SUNDAY 3 MAY - FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER We are due to be pruned says the Gospel; cut back so that new growth can form which will yield more fruit. Yes we get complacent, we get stale and we need a fresh start. We need someone to whisper to us to get up and take a new step, to make a difference, to be life giving. But, oh dear, pruning means I have to have parts of me cut back - the parts that lead me away from Jesus, I suppose, or the parts that weaken my connection to the vine; to the body of Christ; to you. Something in or about me might have to be cut which I anticipate will cost or hurt me in some way but I need to be prepared to allow change, to allow the Father to correct and discipline me as my loving father. I could avoid the pruning – carry on without looking back – but the gospel also warns that the vine grower, the Father, may cut me off altogether. There is no life without Jesus, so pruning is the choice I make. Just how the Father will choose to prune is up to Him but ‘Live in me’ says Jesus, later in the gospel reading, ‘as I live in you’. We know Jesus lives ‘in us’ by the nature of our very creation. John 1 v3 reminds us that all things were made through Him and without Him nothing came into being. It is unsurprising then that ‘He lives in us’. But Jesus seems to be inviting us to ‘live in Him’ and it is surprising perhaps that this is not a certainty but an invitation. We need to actively choose to live ‘in Him’. Jesus has chosen you and me to respond to His invitation right now and actively get to know Him so intimately that we are completely grafted onto the vine; that we are ‘in Him’ in every aspect of our lives. How is this intimacy achieved? Well, although there are many forms of prayer I don’t think we can avoid time spent in conversation, speaking and listening to Jesus; time set apart from all else and focussed on Him. The more time we spend in Jesus’ company, and the more open we are, the easier to hear the whisper of the Father’s voice. Then we can be confident in asking for what we need, knowing, that because it is completely in line with the will of the Father, we shall receive what we ask. This then is the foundation on which we receive and build our lives, and step out into something new, and make a difference, and be life-giving. Pruning leads to much more fruit, so let us have the desire to be well grafted onto the vine. Let us pray for an abundance of fruit, fruit that will last throughout our city. There is much to be done.
