Peachtree Road United Methodist Church March 8, 2015 Third Sunday in Lent The Service of Holy Communion Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.” The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts and then became a time for penance by all Christians. Because Sundays are always little Easters, the penitential spirit of Lent should be tempered with joyful expectation of the Resurrection. Paraments, stoles and banners are purple and ash colors symbolizing penitence and royalty. -Adapted from the United Methodist Book of Worship, published by The United Methodist Publishing House, Nashville, Tennessee, 1992. Minister and People: Have mercy upon us, O God, according to your loving kindness; according to the multitude of your tender mercies blot out our transgressions. Wash us thoroughly from our iniquities, and cleanse us from our sins. For we acknowledge our transgressions, and our sin is ever before us. Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew a right spirit within us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Cantor: Let us pray to the Lord. Choir: Lord, have mercy. Minister: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD The Lesson Acts 8:26-31aKings 5:1-15 † following the reading Minister The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God! Study: Renewing Your Mind Sermon At the Offertory, Prayer Richard Avery, Donald Marsh (Twentieth Century) Before us here the broken bread; before us the uplifted cup; surround us the awesome space; something happens here. We gather from a busy world; approach with great expectancy; God meets us in this sacred place. Something happens here. Who are we that God comes here, shows us each our sacred worth? At this table common people find the pow’r to change the earth. Price is broken, fear is gone. Hate and greed are left behind. Thus we’re changing and we’re learning how to live by God’s design. Let it happen everywhere, where we work, at school, in town. May this love and peace be reaching thru us to the world around. The Parish Choir (8:45 am) Anthem Before us here the broken bread Let all mortal flesh keep silence Edward Bairstow (1874-1946) Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and stand with fear and trembling, and lift itself above, all earthly thought, for the King of kings and Lord of lords, Christ our God, cometh forth to be our oblation, and to be giv’n for food to the faithful. Before Him come the choirs of angels, with every principality and pow’re; the Cherubim with many eyes, and winged Seraphim, who veil their faces as they shout exultingly the hymn. Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and stand with fear and trembling. Alleluia. Liturgy of St. James The Chancel Choir (11:15 am) Tyrone Webb, tenor, Zachary Brown, bass At the Presentation,* Hymn 95 Tune: Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below; praise Him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. THE HOLY COMMUNION The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth. You formed a covenant with us when you led us out of slavery. When we broke that covenant you wrote a new one upon our hearts; that you will be our God and we will be your people. The time will come when you will forgive our iniquity and remember our sin no more. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Sanctus* † The people are seated. Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. He was put to death for our sins and raised for our justification. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forever. The Agnus Dei At the Administration, Choir Motet: Agnus Dei, Requiem, Op. 9 Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world: grant them eternal rest.
