INSTITUTE OF TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERS
The Official Newsletter of the ITE Colorado/Wyoming Section
Members of the ITE CO/WY Section ...
With the recent weather fluctuations, I hope that you have
had opportunity to enjoy the
best of the outdoors Colorado
has to offer both in wintry and
in spring-like weather.
The January Vendor Show
enjoyed some of the nicer
weather, fortunately, for both
the well-attended morning
technical sessions and also
the vendor show itself.
Thanks to Will Johnson for his hard work in assembling
another successful event! Thanks also to WL Contractors
for hosting the technical sessions when attendance was
greater than originally expected. I hope that those of
you who attended the vendor show portion of the event
enjoyed the new venue this year at the Lamar Street
Center--if we are there again next year perhaps we will
have to see about the cost to add some pedal car races
to the event agenda!
I would like to also thank Rich Follmer for his hosting,
on behalf of the Section, a social gathering event at the
recent Wyoming Engineering Society Annual Convention
in Cheyenne. Rich was able to update attendees on Section activities and seek feedback on items that might be
of interest to Wyoming members. It appears that there
may be interest in forming a Wyoming Chapter to more
effectively address the needs of our Wyoming membership. If you are reading this and that possibility is of interest to you please contact Rich Follmer at
[email protected] for more information.
Back in Metro Denver, I hope that some of you also had
the pleasure of attending the Section's recent Meet N
Upcoming Events ...
March Luncheon—Page 7
Greet event, which highlighted the City and County of
Denver and included the opportunity to get to know key
Denver personnel better. Thanks to Emily Gloeckner for
putting together another great event, and to the Denver
staff for making themselves available.
We are also getting to that time of year where our most
recent Past President will be seeking candidates for this
year's Secretary-Treasurer election. If you work for a
consultant or other non-public agency and would be interested in running, please contact Aaron Heumann at
[email protected].
Finally, please make time in your calendars for both our
upcoming luncheon meeting on March 13, to be held at
the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs
(complete with tour!), and the upcoming Spring Transportation Symposium on April 10, to be held at the Colorado Convention Center. Both events promise to be
highly informative and enjoyable—I hope to see many of
you there!

January/February Meeting
Highlights
do you want to see highlighted? Was the food and the
beverage list appropriate?
What can we change to
make the event better or more successful? Please submit any feedback to [email protected].
The Colorado/Wyoming ITE Section held their Annual
Vendor Show at a new venue (the Lamar Street Center)
on January 23rd. Will Johnson coordinated this record
setting event, with a 10-year high of 275 attendees and
40 vendor booths. There was overflow attendance at
both of the technical sessions prior to the vendor show,
and there was positive feedback on the quality of food
and new atmosphere.
The next Section meeting will be a luncheon held in Colorado Springs on Friday, March 13th. General registration will be available on the Section’s website at http://
www.cowyite.org/nextmeeting/.
by Lou Davenport, Section Scribe
Building upon the success of this year’s vendor show,
the Section plans to add more vendors and technical
sessions next year and move the location again to accommodate a larger crowd. Thank you to all the vendors who make the show possible!
On February 19th, the Colorado/Wyoming ITE Section
held a “Meet and Greet” with the leadership from the
City and County of Denver at the Hotel Monaco in downtown Denver. This year was the 4th in an annual series
highlighting leadership in our transportation community,
and included 85 attendees. The meeting opened with a
presentation by Executive Director Jose Cornejo and
was followed by a presentation from the Director of
Transportation, Crissy Fanganello.
We plan to make these leadership events an integral
part of our Section’s annual schedule, but as we move
forward we would love to hear feedback from our members! What did you like about the event? What agency
The 2014 Transportation Symposium will be held on Friday, April 10 in downtown Denver at the Colorado Convention Center. General registration for this event will

SECTION ANNOUNCEMENTS
Please send any announcements that you wish to be posted in the newsletter to Bart
Przybyl, Newsletter Editor, [email protected].
CALL FOR CANDIDATES—SECRETARY/TREASURER
The Colorado/Wyoming Section of ITE is seeking candidates for secretary/treasurer for our next year (201516). Since the Section alternates between public and
private officers, this year we are seeking candidates
who are employed in the Private Sector. Service would
begin in August of this year, and would very likely continue through the increasingly rewarding offices of Vice
President and President, before finishing up as the Past
President for the Section.
The Secretary/Treasurer handles the accounting for the
Section and documents Section meetings. If elected,
you will join a team of professionals who enjoy working
together to provide the best services possible to the
members of our Section. Service to ITE often builds
lasting relationships with fellow professionals in addition
to providing numerous opportunities for public speaking
to your peers. Additional rewarding highlights of service
include travel, expansion of your social and professional
networks, educational programs, and presentation of
awards to current leaders and future engineers.
If this sounds exciting to you, or if you know of potential candidates, please contact Aaron Heumann at (720)
540-6887 or [email protected].
2018 ITE WESTERN DISTRICT MEETING
BRECKENRIDGE, COLORADO
It is official! The Colorado/Wyoming Section will be hosting the 2018 ITE Western District Annual Meeting in
Breckenridge, Colorado!
There was a lot of excitement at the joint Western/Mid
Western meeting in Rapid City when it was announced
that the meeting will be in Breckenridge. I know it will
be a great meeting and we will have a huge turnout.
Thank you to all the Local Arrangements Committee
(LAC) volunteers that helped with the proposal and
presentation effort.
Now the real work begins for the LAC! If you are interested in volunteering for the LAC, please contact Ben
Waldman at [email protected] or Aaron Heumann
at [email protected].

Life is a Highway!
Puzzle Maniac
by Bill Hange, City of Loveland
by Bart Przybyl, Newsletter Editor
Another new year and it has started off quickly. The
Section Annual Vendor Show was a great hit in my opinion. The new conference area provided by WL Contractors is excellent and the food was fantastic. Thanks to
the vendors, Will Johnson and his committee as well as
WL for a great time. There were a couple of excellent
seminars prior to the luncheon that many members took
advantage of attending, the house was packed.
Congratulations to Joe Henderson who was the winner
of last newsletter’s Puzzle Maniac. He chose to receive
free admission to an upcoming luncheon.
The interest in using technology for measuring traffic
flow and system effectiveness was most interesting to
me. Cell phones, MAC addresses and more were discussed as ways to get data on movement of not just
vehicles but people trips. This is so important to our
multi-modal efforts to move people and goods. Due to
interest and demand, it was suggested more information
be conveyed on these topics be at the up-coming Spring
Symposium in April.
If you are not involved in ITE in some way I encourage
you to jump in now. I would like to see more research
on the geometrics of acceleration/deceleration turn lane
design. Maybe you have a current need to study some
topic so talk to our committee on doing something
you’re interested in diving into further. One topic I think
should be very current and interesting is the degradation
of signalized intersection capacity due to texting and cell
phone use. Many of you may be wondering about this
and have seen it doing field counts and studies.
Here’s to hoping you have a great and safe New Year.
Life is a highway so why not drive it a bit to help others
travel and enjoy.
Arnold Undzis from AM Signal presenting in the second seminar
on communications and measuring traffic flow at the January
2015 ITE Vendor Show.
For this issue, how many different ways is it possible to
arrange the order of these four kings?
Please send your answer to the puzzle to
[email protected] by March 9th, 2015.
The winner will be awarded a free ITE luncheon OR a
$25 gift certificate to the establishment of their choice.
SOLUTION TO LAST NEWSLETTER’S PUZZLE
The correct answer was four each of $1 coins, quarters,
nickels, and pennies.
