Dear Parents and Girls The Holy Rosary Outreach Trust: Phumelela
Athlete Athlete Dear Parents and Girls The Holy Rosary Outreach Trust: Phumelela Saturday School Honjiswa: …. „You are angels sent from heaven. The groceries help us a lot because in the middle of the month food ends and we struggle” On Saturdays our High School and sports fields are buzzing with activity and learning, as 96 students from the Dikatole informal settlement in Germiston attend Saturday School. We teach, nurture and enrich the lives of these very special young people, who live in abject poverty, and are subject to extremely harsh circumstances and daily conditions of survival that most of us cannot even begin to imagine. Yet they regularly arrive to learn and grow so that they can change their own life circumstances and those of their families. Every Saturday, a group of dedicated teachers and girls give their „all‟ to make a difference – one student, one lesson, one subject, one meal at a time. The students enjoy academic learning, sports coaching, cultural, art and other fun projects. And, every Saturday these students leave the gates of Holy Rosary with extra knowledge, food in their stomachs, for a few - a little bit of food to see them through the week, and for most – a little more hope. The Phumelela Programme commenced in 2011 with 24 Grade 8 students, (chosen by Ekurhuleni Primary School at the end of Grade 7), who are now our first Grade 12 class. We have watched them grow in their knowledge, skills and confidence, and the difference this programme and the dedicated staff are making, is immeasurable. The programme is funded entirely by Holy Rosary School, (in particular the Debutantes‟ Programme), the kind donations of parents and the broader community. However, like any charity or non-profit organisation, funding is an ongoing challenge. To ensure we can continue to run this programme effectively and efficiently, and each year enroll another 25 Grade 8 students, we need an ongoing source of income to cover all expenses. We have been blessed with a number of parents and staff, who signed up for monthly donations in the past, to provide for family food hampers, or for other necessary items. We would like to express our very sincere appreciation to all those who have donated anything at all, as every small donation helps in a big way. We also have a number of companies who have made larger contributions, some for quite a few years now, and again we want to thank them for their ongoing generosity. We would like to appeal to our parents who are able, to consider making a monetary donation, or a donation in kind. Many parents have contacts with companies who are happy to donate to Outreach projects, even if they themselves are not able to personally contribute. We would love to meet with them and show them what we do. Here are some ideas of how you can support this incredibly worthwhile cause: a “once-off” donation of any amount; an ongoing donation of R150 a month, or more, via debit order, or stop order, to cover a food parcel for one child for a month; a larger donation from a company, towards the running costs of the programme, either “once off” or annually; participation in the programme itself, by coming to talk to the students on any topic that could enrich their lives or teach them a skill; donations of stationery, food, clothing, books etc. Please contact our bursar, Mrs Desre Bellingan, to arrange for a debit order – should you wish to do this, or you can set up a direct payment from your bank account into the Outreach Trust bank account, details of which are below: Account Name: Bank: Branch Code: Account number: The Holy Rosary Outreach Trust Nedbank 198765 1089417527 2 The Holy Rosary Outreach Trust is registered with SARS . It is also in the final stages of registration as a PBO, which means we will be able to offer companies and individuals Section 18A tax certificates for donations as soon as we have our PBO status and official number. There is so much more to tell you about this programme, and so I invite anyone who would like to find out more, or to become involved, to contact me and come and have a cup of tea/coffee and be excited by what we do. As with any great initiative – the beneficiaries themselves – say it best. Meet some of our very special students: Nompumelo: … “thank you for everything you have done for us. Thank you for the food parcels, you don‟t know how much it means” Lucky: “ … please do not get weary of doing good !” Nthabiseng: ….”both my parents don‟t work and my three siblings and I struggle ….thank you for all your trouble” Kenda Knowles Marketing and Foundation Manager GENERAL Prayers Please remember the following members of the HRS family who are in need of your supportive prayers: those families and teachers in our primary and high schools who have been victims of crime; those girls, families and HRS staff, who are going through a difficult time at present. Please remember all those in our Holy Rosary family who are in need, or who are suffering in any way. 3 SPORT NEWS Please see below the Sports Timetable for next week (Monday 16th to Saturday 21st March) for netball and hockey.
