A 6.5 miles walk through two contrasting landscape,
the hilly wooded Chilterns and the flat open Vale of Aylesbury

Directions
?
Take the bridleway opposite Great Kimble church up to the top of the hill. Join the Ridgeway and then turn left
through the gate. Follow the path across a clearing and through the woods, emerging onto the fields close to
Chequers. Cross the driveway and the road, then take the bridleway up the hill. Follow the waymarked path
through the woods and back down to the road.Take the bridleway on the right, then at the gate turn left to
Coombe.
? At the road, turn right, then left into a large field.Take the path across the field and at the bridleway turn right
to Ellesborough Church.A short cut can be taken here past Cymbelline's castle and through the woods back
to the Ridgeway.
? Go through the churchyard and across the field.Turn left at the woodland and follow the path across fields and
down to the road at Brookside Farm.A short cut follows the road and the railway line to Old Grange.The
main route goes under the railway bridge and left along Grove Lane.Take the first footpath on the right
towards Kimblewick Road.
? Cross the fields to the road, then turn left and take the bridleway on the right shortly after a bend in the road.
Follow the route across fields, the road and the railway line and thence across the fields back to Great Kimble.
Refreshments: There are public houses in both Great and Little Kimble.
Features of Interest

Chequers was given to the nation
by Lord Lee of Fareham in 1917 as
a country house for the Prime
Minister of the day. It is a 16th
century brick mansion on the site
of a much older building. There is
no public access to the house and you are requested to
keep to the path.

Coombe Hill is owned by the National Trust. The wellknown Monument is dedicated to the Buckinghamshire
men who died in the Boer War and the view from here
extends as far as the Berkshire Downs and,on a clear day,
the Cotswolds.

Situated on an imposing mound with good views of
Aylesbury Vale, Ellesborough Church is a flint-faced
building originating from the twelfth century.

Water which has percolated through the chalk emerges
in springs at the base of the Chilterns. The stream just
north of Ellesborough powered a corn mill which was
gutted by fire in 1933 and subsequently demolished.The
millponds can still be seen beside the path.

The name Kimble, is believed to be a corruption of
Cunobelin (the Cymbeline of the Shakespeare play), a
first century king of the Catuvellaunii, whose tribal lands
were centred on the present day counties of
Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. The
distinctive hill known as Cymbeline's Mount, which can be
seen from many points along the route, is the site of a hill
fort from this era.

The Old Grange Farmhouse was built in the fifteenth
century and was originally owned by MissendenAbbey.The
moat once surrounded the buildings but only two sides still
exist.The barn was built in 1793 and consists of a timber
frame with weather boarding.

The earthworks in the field by the
A4010 are a Scheduled Ancient
Monument and represent the
remains of a mediaeval extension
to the village of Great Kimble.
