The Reverend Spooner Some of his spoonerisms "Come into the arms of the shoving leopard" Real meaning: "Come into the arms of the Loving shepherd" "It is kisstomary to cuss the bride" Real meaning: “It is customary to kiss the bride” William Archibald Spooner (22 July 1844 – 29 August 1930) The Reverend Spooner was apparently an amiable, kind and hospitable man, though absentminded. He also had a keen intellect, and his tongue barely kept up with his thought process. This resulted in an unintentional interchange of sounds, producing a phrase with a meaning entirely different from the one intended. The Reverend was an albino who suffered defective eyesight, and it is thought that this also caused some of his verbal confusions. This mix-up of words is now called a spoonerism. Real meaning: “He was killed by a crushing blow.” The art of communication While eating in a restaurant, I reprimanded my four-year-old son for speaking with his mouth full. "Mump umn Kmpfhm," was all I heard. "Drew," I scolded, "no one can understand a word you're saying." "He says he wants some ketchup," my husband said calmly. A woman sitting nearby leaned over and asked "How in the world did you understand him?" “I'm a dentist," my husband explained From Julia Denton, Reader's Digest Table Talk is a card & conversation game designed to get people talking, laughing and getting to know each others point of view. The aim of Table Talk is to provide a safe place for people to begin to explore, articulate and engage in all kinds of conversations about the big and not so big questions of life. The hope is that as we get together, conversations will flourish, relationships will be built and strengthened and that we’ll all have fun. Games normally last between 30 and 45 minutes. So come along and meet us for a ‘Think’ with a ‘Drink’. A letter from Val This month’s Bridge is all about communication. I have always been someone who likes to talk to others and many an interesting conversation has been had waiting in the queue at the supermarket. However, written communication has always been somewhat more difficult for me because I suffer with dyslexia. Studying for my degree was tough but I relied on the powerful words from Philippians 4:13 in the Bible where it says , ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” On the back cover, we’ve included an article about the Rev Spooner who often mixed up his words causing much unintentional humour. His condition led to the term ’spoonerism’ being coined. That reminds me of the first time I came to preach here at Kimble with a view to becoming the Minister. It was a communion service and I was so nervous that when I came to bless the bread and wine, I managed to replace the word ’wine’ with ’milk’. I thought that was the end of my chances but the people here at Kimble Free Church still saw God’s calling and appointed me. I have been here over 10 years now and no-one has ever cried over spilt milk. On this month’s cover of the Bridge, we’re advertising our brand new ‘card & conversation’ game designed to get people talking. It will be taking place at the Swan on 19th April at 7pm and we’ll have all kinds of conversations. The aim is to have fun as we chat over a drink or two. So come along and meet us for a ‘Think with a Drink’. Jesus was a great communicator. He spoke vital truths to people in ways they could understand using things they already understood. He spoke to those around him using things they saw daily such as fishing, agriculture, coins, bread, and even sheep. He would use anything that was well-known by those that were listening. If Jesus was speaking to a crowd today I’m sure he would speak about TV, IPhones and the Internet to communicate His good news. For the followers of Christ today, we have that same instruction in that we need to communicate the important news of Jesus. We need to communicate that we follow a God who loves us so much that He gave up His own life on a cross to die for our sins in our place. Communication is the first step to understanding. I would like to encourage you to come along and share your opinions at ‘Table Talk’ at the Swan. It promises to be a fun and interesting night and we hope the first of many. An occasional evening event with live music allowing us to meet with God in an informal relaxed manner. There will be no pressure to do anything - just turn up and spend some quality time seeking and communicating with God!
