I would like to recognize the role of school personnel who help
support our students in their day-to-day activities, who help with
student success. Our paras, cooks, custodians, bus drivers, coaches and administrative assistants do a lot for students day in and
day out.
Spring sports will begin soon and here is one person hoping for a
quick warm up. Good luck to our track participants and golfers as
well as FCCLA, FFA, speech and musicians in their events this
spring.
Kindergarten Round-Up will be held on
March 27th at 9:00.
Congratulations
Jabe Wurtz
for being selected to play in the

Notes from Mr. Hudson
Many of our students look forward to March. To many it gives them the chance to
trade in their winter coats for spring jackets, for our seniors it marks the beginning of the
stretch run of their final year of high school year, and yet to others, it offers a chance to
continue the hard work they have put in throughout the school year. Whichever the reason,
it is a time of renewed energy at HPC!
As we approach the month of March it is time to begin thinking about registration
for classes for the 2015-2016 school year. Current 8th-11th grade students will receive
a registration packet in April and can begin the process of selecting their classes. This
registration packet filled with course descriptions, class schedules, and graduation progress
checklists helps lay the foundation to a successful and well rounded school experience. It
is important that our students look at their current course load as well as the classes that
might be needed to meet HPC graduation requirements. Finally, it is never too early for
our students to be looking towards the future and take classes that might be of interest to
them as they begin mapping out their future career goals. The HPC Distance Learning
program can provide students with college level courses at reduced costs and help students
get a head start on their college degree. I encourage our HPC juniors and seniors to take
advantage of this opportunity!
With March arriving it is also time for students to begin to think about taking the
Nebraska State Assessments and the MAPS tests. Last year, HPC students did an
excellent job and I am confident that we will again have a group of students dedicated to
achieving on these tests. Our students and staff have worked hard this year to achieve
within the classroom and the yearly tests will once again be an opportunity for our school to
showcase our efforts. During this important time for our students and school it is important
for parents, guardians, and teachers to help our students understand that being well rested,
use good time management skills, exercising, and taking advantage of down time are just
as important as taking the test themselves. The bottom line is that testing stress will be
there, but good awareness and management can help our students during this important
time. Good luck to our students and thanks for your hard work!
A huge and well-deserved thank you needs to go out to our secretarial staff,
custodians, cooks, and bus drivers. Without their hard work and dedication to our school it
would make the educational experience of our students impossible. As an administrator, I
can’t say enough positive things about the pride that is shown by our support staff in helping
making HPC a special place for our students. Again, thank you to everyone who helps
make the day to day successes within our school possible!

March Notes from Mrs. LeSuer
MARCH…seems like just yesterday we started the 2014-2015 year. As I reflect on the year thus far
I am very proud of HPC students! Some of the chatter I would like to share includes the sharing and excitement of K-3 students with Math. Teachers routinely share that they are asked if it is time for Math, students
appear to be more confident on how to complete problems and retention of skills is evidenced through spiraling of the curriculum….never before have I heard such excitement as I have this year!
As I’ve said before, education is multi-faceted system and doesn’t take place solely in the classroom.
The expectations of schools today still focus on the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic but accountability has become an area of focus within the last few years. With this being said, March 23rd is the opening of
the NeSA testing window in which students in 3-8 and 11th grade are administered testing in Math, Reading
and Science (5th, 8th, 11th). It will be of the utmost importance students are in school on the days of testing.
To assist parents with planning of appointments and necessary absences, testing dates will be posted on the
MS daily bulletin which can be found on the HPC homepage.
2015-2016 Kindergarten Roundup will be held on March 27, 2015. Please note there will not be
classes for the current Kindergarten class on this date! In planning for next year I have made telephone contact with parents of students who are eligible for Kindergarten next year. If you have a son or daughter that
will be attend Kindergarten next year and have not been contacted by me, please call (308) 548-2216 so I can
add your child to the roster. To assist in planning, here information for reference:
Section 79-214 of LB1006 requires that a child must be five years of age on or before July 31, 2015
to enroll in Kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year.
If you have a child that you want to send to Kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year, but he/
she will not be five years of age by July 31, 2015, the following is criteria for you to follow:
Section 79-214 of LB1006 goes on to permit local boards of education to admit children if certain
requirements are met. School districts, under the guidance of their school boards, are allowed to
enroll a child who turns five after July 31 but on or before October 15 if the parent requests admission
and provides an affidavit that states:
1. The child attended Kindergarten in another district during the current school year, OR
2. The family plans to relocate to a district that allows admission during the current
school year, OR
3. The child has demonstrated his or her ability to do Kindergarten level work through
a recognized assessment procedure approved by the local school board.
Monthly Forecast
If you have a child that you want to send to Kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year, but they will
not be five years of age by July 31st, the deadline to request early Kindergarten entrance is on or
before April 15th. You must start the process by April 1st in order to meet the deadline or your child
will not be considered for Kindergarten entrance during the 2015-2016 school year. In this case,
please contact Mrs. LeSuer for further information regarding attendance at Kindergarten Round-Up.
High Plains Community Schools will be having Kindergarten Round-Up on March 27th at 9:00. A packet
containing information about Kindergarten and several important papers that you will need to complete will
be mailed to you. It is requested that you fill out the necessary information and bring it with you on March
27th.
When registering your child/children, you will need to have an original birth certificate from the
Bureau of Vital Statistics, an up-to-date immunization record, and a Kindergarten physical. It takes a while to
acquire/organize these papers so be sure to start now to get the necessary documents together.
Please call the office at (308) 548-2216 to indicate whether you and your child will be attending
round-up! If you have any questions regarding Kindergarten, please call!
Until next month…..GO STORM!!!

Wellness Report
Our wellness emphasis in February was on handling stress.
The word resilience has been applied to people who handle stress
well. Resilient people are flexible and bounce back from troubles
in their lives. We can all learn to be more resilient by practicing
the following tips:
1. Exercise, read or do some form of relaxing activity regularly.
2. Be more flexible. Learn to compromise.
3. Lean on someone in times of stress. Talk to a friend,
family member or spiritual advisor.
4. Remember there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.
5. Remember to be thankful.
Practice these 5 steps in times of stress and you will build
resilience.
