He said that the task of the Ministry of Health will be to “confront these diseases through communication in a bid to change the mindset and culture regarding individual responsibility”. The response forms part of the overall vector control strategies after a recently confirmed case of Zika virus in Lyssons in the Parish. Minister of Health Dr. Christopher Tufton was at the helm of the activities and said The Minister of Health along with his Ministry of Health team, partners, and vector control workers started the walkthrough and hand out of educational material in the Morant Bay town square. The next leg of the „Operation: Mosquito Search and Destroy‟ initiative is scheduled for Saturday, April 2, 2016 in Mandeville. The initiative is being done to mobilize and motivate residents to take responsibility by searching for and destroying mosquito breeding sites in and around their homes. What year did you start working in Ministry of Health/SERHA? I started working as a Youth Service Worker from 1980-1981 at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital‟s Medical Records Department. At the end of the period I was recommended for fulltime employment on September 1, 1981. Minister of Health as one of the best health care workers for the year 1995. 2. What are some of the positions you held? Medical Records Clerk, Departmental Assistant, Victoria Jubilee Hospital Health Records Officer, National Chest Hospital Assessment Officer, National Chest Hospital Assessment Officer/Patient Affairs Officer, Bustamante Hospital for Children Acting Hospital Administrator, Bustamante Hospital for Children 7. What is your personal mission statement? To serve selflessly with honesty, integrity and maintain a reputation of being dedicated to every goal I choose to pursue while thanking God in some way, every day. 3. What do you like the most about your job? The opportunities that the job has provided me with in terms of meeting people from all differing backgrounds and personalities, and the joyful feeling when you have helped someone and made them smile. 9. What is the most important life lesson you have learnt? To accept people for whom they are. People really do not change it is only the circumstances that alter behaviours. 4. What inspires you? I am inspired by people‟s stories who have created possible from the impossible. 10. What do you do in your spare time? I read a motivational book by either Iyanla Vanzant or TD Jakes. 6. What word of advice would you like to give to the staff? You will reap just rewards with hard work and dedication. Mediocrity is not an option. 8. Did you always want to work in the health? Yes, in the health care setting, as it is one of the place where people who are at their most vulnerable stage would go. 5. What is your greatest achievement? There are many great achievements, but the one that stood out the most was when I was awarded by the SERHA Times PAGE 3 SERHA Mourns the Passing of Dr. Denise Duncan Goffe The management and staff of the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) mourn the loss of Dr. Denise Duncan Goffe. She died on March 19, 2016. We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to her family and our prayers are with them during this difficult time of bereavement. Dr. Duncan Goffe joined SERHA‟s Regional Technical Department as Clinical Quality Assurance Officer over a year ago after retiring from her position as Director of Health Service Planning and Integration in the Ministry Health in 2014. She played an invaluable role in the Region‟s efforts to continuously improve and maintain high quality health care service delivery to the public. She will be greatly missed and her tremendous and dedicated service to the public health sector, which spans over 30 years, will not be forgotten. The Thanksgiving Service for Dr. Duncan Goffe Will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the University Chapel, University of the West Indies, Mona Sydenham Health Centre Renovated Health Authority (SERHA) and the Sugar Transformation Unit through the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the European Union. The scope of work included the construction of a new waiting area and two new bathroom facilities. Security was also improved at the facility with the installation of a perimeter fence. Some sections of the health centre were also painted. Patients are expected to enjoy improved health care service delivery and security with the recent renovation of the Sydenham Health Centre in St. Catherine. The project, which is valued at approximately $5.8 Million, was a joint venture between South East Regional The Sydenham Health Centre is a type three facility offering a range of health care services including family health, curative, dressing, dental health, oral health, mental health and nebulisaiton. The facility serves more 2,000 patients from over 15 communities on a monthly basis. The team was victorious when they competed against the Harbour View Netball Club in the semi-finals on March 20, 2016. The are now moving on to the finals. We wish them the best of luck. Ms. Sherlin Hall, Customer Service Representative at the Regional Office is responsible for responding to the queries sent to this number. All responses will be verified by a senior member of the Regional Office Management team before they are sent back to the staff member. Here are a few tips that will help you: 1. Questions will be responded to during regular working hours which are 8:30 a.m - 5:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8:30-4:00 p.m. on Fridays 2. The hospital received ₤200,000, which was to be used to promote and extend maternity services at the hospital A number of additions were made to the facility over the years. Chief among them were an operating theatre, labour and delivery rooms as well as two wings to accommodate additional patients especially for antennal surgery. The Victoria Jubilee Hospital (VJH) was established in 1887 when prominent Jamaicans built a maternal hospital in honour of Queen Victoria who celebrated her Jubilee Anniversary that year. In 1891 the building was opened by His Excellency Sir Henry Blake, Governor of Jamaica. The bed capacity was 12 and it was staffed by a matron and 14 pupil/student midwives. The services rendered always kept pace with the expansion and modernisation of the hospital. The hospital was opened to improve the standards of obstetric care in Jamaica and train midwives. Dr. Michael Grabham, an English doctor took charge of the hospital a year later and served in that position for two years. He was later reappointed as a visiting obstetri- By 1947, the capacity at the hospital increased to 110 beds, with a daily average of 140 patients and 5,150 deliveries in that year. In 1952 improvements continued at the hospital with the assistance of the Grabham Trust. A much larger and more modern antenatal clinic was built in memory of Dr. Garbham. A bust bearing the likeness of Dr. Grabham still stands at the front of that building. Preparations were made in 1955 for a the new maternity block. The new four storey building was occupied in October 1958. Today VJH is the largest referral maternity hospital in the English Speaking Caribbean. VJH sees more than 70,000 women, and approximately 8,000 babies are delivered each year. Call Taneisha Lewis, Public Relations Officer at 822 822--4041 or E E--mail [email protected] 10.5.1 Reporting an Infraction Anyone reporting an infraction should specify the nature of the infraction, the time, location and any other initial information to facilitate an appropriate reaction/action in a timely manner. 10.5.2 Recording an Infraction Where an infraction is deemed to be serious enough to warrant formal documentation, care should be exercised to capture all the relevant details from all who may have been involved, including any witnesses. 10.5.3 Investigations i) The scope and depth of investigations would depend on the nature of the infraction, and must seek to establish the relevant facts. ii) Depending on the nature of the infraction and the level at which it occurs, the Permanent Secretary may establish an internal procedure, using Senior Officers within the Ministry to conduct the investigation and recommend an appropriate response. 10.5.4 Committee of Inquiry i) Where an infraction is felt to be serious, it may be necessary for the Governor General or any appropriate authority with delegated functions to establish a committee of inquiry, with clear terms of reference specific to the case. ii) Any such committee should be so constituted as to guarantee objectivity, impartiality and timeliness. iii) The committee should be comprised of no fewer than three (3) members. iv) The chair of the committee should be a member of the legal profession with the appropriate expertise.
