On behalf of the Sommer Committee and Providence St. Vincent Hospital, I invite you to
attend one of America’s premier CME programs, the Sommer Memorial Lectures. Dr. Ernst
Sommer established a perpetual trust with the directive that physicians have access to
continuing education at no cost. The Sommer Committee continues that charge today to
bring nationally and internationally respected speakers to Portland for this annual event.

The School of Medicine Alumni Association has long recognized and affirmed the
importance of life-long education to our alumni. I am therefore delighted to invite you to
join us on Friday afternoon, May 15, for an outstanding program of new information and
innovative approaches to the situations we encounter daily as health care professionals.
Dr. Sancy Leachman, Chair, Department of Dermatology, OHSU, joins us as the 2015 Vukov
Lecturer. We are also taking this opportunity to recognize outstanding achievement in
national and international service by alumni of the School of Medicine. All the details are
inside, and I hope that you can join us for an engaging and thought provoking session.

Meet this year’s Sommer Lecturers
Lawrence K. Altman, MD, MACP
“The Doctor’s World” Columnist for The New
York Times. Senior Fellow, Woodrow Wilson
International Center for Scholars, Washington,
D.C.; Clinical Professor of Medicine, New York
University
Dr. Altman graduated from Harvard in Government and received his
M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine. After an internship
in San Francisco, he went on to a residency in Internal Medicine and
a fellowship in Medical Genetics at the University of Washington
Affiliated Hospitals in Seattle. He served as an Epidemic Intelligence
Service Officer at the CDC and is a member of the Institute of
Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
His presentations are: “Who Goes First? The Story of Self
Experimentation in Medicine”; “Medical Journalism” and “Covering
Epidemics” .
Thomas DeLoughery, MD, MACP

Professor of Dermatology; Chair, Department
of Dermatology; Director of the Melanoma and
Skin Cancer Program at Knight Cancer Institute

Dr. Leachman received her MD from the University of Texas
Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Post-graduate training
included a Dermatology residency and a Dermatology Fellowship at
Yale New Haven Medical Center.
Here presentation is: “Watch Out, Melanoma: We’re Teaming Up to
Get You!” .
CME Distinguished Faculty Lecturers
The School of Medicine has established the CME
Distinguished Faculty Award to honor outstanding service
in continuing medical education. This year’s recipients will
present at the Friday afternoon Alumni Scientific Meeting.
Awardees are Cynthia Ferrell, MD, MSEd and Nels Carlson, MD
both gifted teachers and experts in their fields.
Cynthia Ferrell, MD, MSEd
Dr. DeLoughery was awarded his MD from the Indiana University
School of Medicine, Indianapolis. Post-graduate training included
Residency in Internal Medicine at OHSU, and Fellowship in
Hematology and Medical Oncology, also at OHSU. For his
outstanding dedication to continuing medical education and
excellence as a teacher, Dr. DeLoughery has been recognized as an
OHSU CME Distinguished Lecturer.
His presentations are: “The New Anticoagulants: Panacea or
Pandora’s Box?”; “sex, lies, and iron deficiency” and “Venous
Thromboembolism: What’s New! What’s Cool!”.
Michael Murr, MD
Professor of Surgery, USF-Health;
Professor of Molecular Pharmacology &
Physiology; Chief of Surgery, Tampa General
Hospital; Director of Metabolic and Bariatric
Surgery, Tampa, FL
Dr. Murr received his MD from the American University of Beiruit
in Lebanon. Post-graduate training included a General Surgery
residency at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City and a
Gastrointestinal Research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
MN.
His presentations are: “Contemporary Treatment of Obesity”; “The
Hormonal Mechanisms of Bariatric Surgery” and “Bridging the Gap
with Clinician-Scientists” .
Associate Professor of Pediatrics; Director,
Pediatric Residency Program, Oregon Health &
Science University, Portland, OR
Dr. Ferrell was awarded her MD from the University of Nevada in
Reno. She completed her pediatric residency at Oregon Health &
Science University and her MSEd at Keck School of Medicine of the
University of Southern California.
Her presentation is “e-Professionalism: Challenges to Learning and
Practicing Medicine in the Age of Social Media”.
Nels Carlson, MD
Associate Professor of Orthopaedics &
Rehabilitation, Oregon Health & Science
University, Portland, OR
Dr. Carlson was awarded his MD from Oregon Health & Science
University. Post-graduate training included a Physical Medicine
& Rehabilitation residency at Harvard Medical School-Spaulding
Rehabilitation Hospital and a Neurophysiology fellowship at
Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
His presentation is ”Back Pain: Everything I Need to Know I Did Not
Learn in Med School” .

Course Description
The Sommer Memorial Lectures and Alumni Scientific Sessions bring
nationally and internationally-known speakers to discuss a broad range of
current clinical, research and societal issues in medicine. Topics are designed
to be of interest and value to both the generalist and specialty physician.
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be:

Familiar with newer anticoagulants and able to weigh the risks and
benefits of using them rather than older drugs
More aware of the role hormones play in bariatric surgery
Better able to treat patients with deep venous thromboembolisms;
understand how long to use anticoagulants and how best to discontinue
their use
More knowledgeable of various treatment options for patients suffering
with back pain
Aware of the media’s role in covering health epidemics world-wide

The Alumni Association will be presenting its annual awards on Friday,
May 15. Awards to be presented include the Resident Paper of the Year
Award highlighting resident/fellows research), the Postdoctoral Paper of
the Year Award (highlighting postdoctoral research), the Charles A. Preuss
Distinguished Alumnus/ an Award (honoring professional achievement), the
Esther Pohl Lovejoy Leadership Award (honoring exceptional leadership),
and the Early Career Achievement Award (highlighting significant career
contributions within fifteen years of graduation).
Credit
The Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine is accredited by the
Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide
continuing medical education for physicians.
