Arresting footage of past and present bullfights reveal Barrera’s perilous obsession for the spectacle as well as his irresistible urge to confront death at every turn. In Spanish with subtitles. SYNOPSIS, LONG Antonio Barrera is the most gored bullfighter in modern history, and known to perform with total abandonment. He’s been gored twenty three times, an unusually high number that includes seventeen surgeries, countless broken bones and scars. Now with a family to support, a body that won’t hold up and a lack of interest from promoters, Barrera has decided to retire. Before his last bullfight, he is conflicted. After taking such a beating all his life, he dreams of staying alive for his family. Yet he still fantasizes of becoming a well-known bullfighter, a dream that he and his father shared since he was a young boy, and to do that he feels he must sacrifice himself to the bulls. Will he survive his final performance? Gored 2015 Tribeca Film Festival Press Notes Page 3 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT The hours before the final performance were not going to be easy. With his wife anxiously watching him dress and our little crew all crammed into a tiny hotel room, it was hard to tell whether we were filming the beginning of a joyous new chapter in Antonio’s life or his funeral. Antonio Barrera had agreed to stop his impossible pursuit of bullfighting stardom. It was the only dream he’s ever had, and it nearly killed him so many times. Strangely, keeping the dream alive seemed to mean more to Barrera than keeping himself alive. To him, death was his daily companion, as he offered himself to the bulls like a sacrifice. It’s an unsettling idea and seemed totally foreign to us. For the most part, we take life for granted. But on those rare occasions, when we do find ourselves in dangerous situations, the fear of death sets our priorities straight. We protect ourselves and cling to life. Barrera was a different case, and retirement to him was more than just saying goodbye to his career - he had to embrace the reality of everyday life, of sinking down to mortality, of being forgotten. As the trumpet signaled the final moment, Antonio’s hard wiring trumped logic. With his wife and daughter in the audience watching in terror, he walked over to the bull’s gate and knelt in front of it. The idea was to make the bull jump by him as it charged out of the gate - arguably the most dangerous move in bullfighting. Standing so close to the action we knew we were about to capture a once-in-a-lifetime moment. But we also knew we were filming the end of a tragedy, regardless of the outcome. Antonio decided to sacrifice himself and his family one more time for a final chance at glory. For a brief moment his choice didn’t seem so strange to us. We all dream about leaving a mark on this world. And to Antonio, living a normal family life seemed deadlier than a six hundred kilo bull charging his already-battered body. It was his last chance to join the immortals, and he had to take it. You’re never truly dead, as the bullfighters say, so long as you are remembered.
