MAKERERE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NATURAL SCIENCES COMMEMORATION OF THE LONG AND DISTINGUISHED SERVICE OF SENIOR PROFESSORS Friday, 20th July 2012 i FOREWORD The College of Natural Sciences (CONAS) has a total of 12 Professors and 11 Associate Professors, out of a total of 139 teaching staff. Of the 12 Professors, 9 are retired and on contract, as are 5 of the 11 Associate Professors. Today, CoNAS is dedicating time to celebrate and pay tribute to the committed service rendered to us by these 14 galant scientists, who have served in various capacities across various fields of science over the years. It is a great joy to render service, more so, effective service. It is of even greater joy to recognise that the service rendered has been dedicated in nature. In this book, we summarize the academic lives of these Professors who have selflessly lived most of their distinguished scientific careers right here with us at CoNAS, serving Makerere University. To CoNAS, their service has been absolutely exemplary, full of relentless guidance, and as a result, to the younger generation of academics, a wonderful learning experience. Their long and unremitting service ranges from teaching, to supervision of students, writing of programmes, heading departments, heading faculties, chairing committees, directing departments, appointment to top management, representation at different levels (nationally and internationally), doing scientific research and publishing, in addition to, fostering local and international collaborations. The College cherishes every single moment they have spent on mentorship. Their dedicated supervision has left behind a total of 87 PhDs and 195 MScs in various scientific fields, wrote by over 400 publications in international journals and over 40 research grants. Over 40 of the total number of students supervised are now staff members in various departments at CoNAS, and at varioius levels in other university units. At CoNAS we are therefore extremely proud to have been associated with these, academic mentors. Their dedicated efforts as well as the research grants they won have iii laid a firm foundation for the future, and greatly aided the internationalization aspect of the University. We appreciate the contributions from Office of the Vice Chancellor, the University Printery, CoNAS Finance Committee and the Organising Committee that have made this occasion a great success. We will forever cherish the firm foundation they established, while they each diligently played their respective roles, as we continue to build for the future. Professor J.Y.T. Established on the guiding motto, ‘WE BUILD FOR THE FUTURE’, it was clear to the founders that no Institution can survive without the requisite leadership and quality human resources. From her humble beginnings to the current oldest and largest public University in the region, it is clear that an institution the size of Makerere University would not have achieved this status had it not been for a team of hardworking and dedicated academic staff; the bedrock of existence and everpresent source of innovation. At the College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), we have a select club of fourteen senior professors who have through decades of dedicated service scaled the echelons of academic excellence to the highest rank; professorship. These dignified lady and gentlemen have committed most of their professional life to serving Makerere University and their motherland Uganda. These Professors have on average served for a period of over 30 years. As such, these humble public servants have attained the statutory retirement age but owing to a shortage of staff, have continued to serve under contract. They continue to deligently teach, carry out research, mentor younger staff members, attract research partnerships and also take part in outreach activities among other activities. As the College of Natural Sciences, we feel that it is not only just but also of great importance that we recognize their dedicated service to this institution and our nation by documenting their service both under the newly-established College of Natural Sciences and formerly under the Faculty of Science. Some famous personalities have said thus in relation to recognizing contributions of others. In the arena of human life, the honors and rewards fall to those who show their good qualities in action. ~Aristotle Recognition is the greatest motivator. ~Gerard C.
