Preface
• NIHSanA (A Sanskrit word meaning Target)
stands for Nadia Initiative for Health Hygiene
Acceleration. NIHSanA denoted WASH in health
initiatives undertaken by Nadia district with the
primary objective of bringing down its neonatal
death rates by half within march 2017 by
strengthening delivery of existing health services
alongwith addressing 1) Hygiene and Sanitation at
maternity hubs and P.H.C.s 2) Menstrual Hygiene
3) Transition to an open defecation free district 4)
Ensuring availability of Ambulance and prehospital care and 5) Malnutrition

Neonatal Death is a curse to our nation

Three causes accounted for 78% of all neonatal deaths in India:
prematurity & low birthweight, neonatal infections and birth asphyxia
(Source:- Causes of neonatal and child mortality in India: a
nationally representative mortality survey:-Million Death Study
Collaborators, Bassani DG, Kumar R, Awasthi S, Morris SK, Paul VK,
Shet A, Ram U, Gaffey MF, Black RE, Jha P).
Most of the causes of deaths in the new born period can be
prevented or managed by households, communities and health
facilities.

Doctors and Health workers play an
important role in improving hygienic
practices in public.

Administration

Dept and IMA has taken this
initiative in involving participation
of Doctors’ in this movement.
They also prescribe “Latrine Use”
and “Hygienic” practices in cases of
Diarrhoea, malnutrition etc.

ANGELS Ambulances and
Pre-hospital Care
•

ANGELS (Active Network Group of
Emergency Life Savers) is an innovative effort
aimed at ensuring availability of Ambulances
and pre-hospital care during emergencies, in
Nadia.
The GPS /GPRS enabled network of
ambulances covering entire district of Nadia
with EMCT trained volunteers under
ANGELS.

Medical Emergency
Catchment Area Approach for
Field Level Health Workers

The district has been divided in
6627
catchment
areas
corresponding one AWW/ASHA
worker. Such catchment area
will
have
around
200
households. The AWW in charge
of
catchment
trained
and
oriented to ensure the area open
defecation
free
ad
attend
expecting mothers and children.
