Mission: All funds support the Albany Symphony Orchestra and its educational programs. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT For this particular newsletter I am not going to take up a lot of space with a message from me because the message during this time is all about our 2015 Showhouse and those working so hard to make it possible. So many dedicated people have already stepped forward, working hard behind the scenes to make it a success. Thanks go out to Barbara Zautner, Bill Zautner, Ruth Cook (the most reliable and stalwart of volunteers), Mary and Ramon Rodriquez, Pat Fallek, Susan Jacobsen, Judy Ciccio, Kathy De Weese, Julia Smart, Andrea Angerame, Anne Brewster, Dee Burkins, Diane Davison, Jean Fogarty, Peg Schalit, Gloria Van Derpoel, Barbara Hallenbeck, Jan Satin, Reese Satin, Judy Coppie, Sue Haswell, Steve Corson, Cathy Lowenski, Maureen Neal, Rosemary Brown, Marcia Cockrell, Lucy Song and our own behind the scenes, Hazel Smith. Thank you to the Woman's Club of Albany for stepping up this year and volunteering to hostess one full day and evening. Thank you to Maestro David Alan Miller for finding us a beautiful Preview Party house. And thank you to Lynne Nisoff for putting this very special issue of the newsletter together. There are many, many more thanks to come but for now let this suffice. Suzie Waltz, President SHOWHOUSE 2015 Rockledge, located at 158 Van Wies Point Rd., Glenmont, was built on a bluff overlooking the majestic Hudson River. It was constructed in 1904 as a summer home for Chauncy Hakes, a prominent dealer in the early days of the automobile industry. Mr. Hakes was President of the Hakes and LeBourveau automobile firm and head of the Albany Garage. Subsequent owners of the home were John G. Myers (of the Myers Department Store in Albany) and Dr. Sherman Gates, an endocrinologist . The current owner of the home is Frank Salamida, Sales Manager of Capital Cities Imported Cars in Glenmont. Mr. Salamida enlarged the original structure adding a state-of-the-art gourmet kitchen. Rockledge stands on a 1.66 acre lot with 200 feet of Hudson River frontage. Its 5,573 square feet include four bedrooms, two full bathrooms and one half bath. An in-ground pool overlooks the river. The views are spectacular. Please turn to Page 3 of this Newsletter to review the dates and hours to view this magnificent estate along with the times to attend our special events. MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR VANGUARD’S PREVIEW PARTY Our Showhouse 2015 Preview Party on Sunday, April 26, starts with a tour of our magnificent home from 3 pm to 5 pm, followed by a party at 81 Mosher Road from 4:30 pm to 7 pm, the home of Charles H. Buchanan, DDS, of Guilderland Orthodontics. It promises to be a fine one, with delicious and satisfying food and drink catered by Old Daley Inn, along with old and new friends celebrating the start of another successful fundraiser. There will be music, with Michael T. Lampkin playing the Hardman Baby Grand in the living room. Dr. Buchanan bought the former house and property, occupying 12 acres, in 2001. The old house had to be demolished and the new house was completed in 2006. It has two stories and two beautiful porches, one welcoming us across the front, another with a breathtaking river view in the back. The house, in Victorian farmhouse style, is 3200 square feet. The barn was restored between 2001 and 2003 and is now the carriage house. In the old barn Dr. Buchanan discovered a stained glass window which he restored and which is now in the house. On the western side of the property is Frothingham Lake, which empties into the Hudson River via a stream that runs along the south side of the house. We thank Dr. Buchanan for generously offering his lovely home and we hope you all join us. Watch for your invitation in the mail. The Showhouse is located at 158 Van Wies Point Road in Glenmont and folks were very excited about getting an early look inside the house. There were approximately 42 people in attendance. Some work has already been started and the designers are anxious to spin their magic. This will truly be a house not to be missed. The original house has many intricate and interesting rooms to discover as well as the large addition. There is a roomy kitchen with a breakfast nook, as well as huge living and dining rooms. The house is located on the Hudson and the many windows throughout the house make it very easy to spot the daily activity on the river.
