Come Discover Albany!
New York’s Capital Region has enticed visitors for over 400 years with
historic sites, fabulous attractions, entertaining events, festivals, and
more. World-class museums, unique shopping, stunning architecture,
delicious restaurants and welcoming accommodations ensure your
Albany experience is legendary.
The banks of the great river now bearing his name served as a
stopping place for Henry Hudson and his ship the Half Moon in 1609,
as the explorer sought a Northeast Passage to the Orient. Later, a fur
trading post called Fort Orange would be established by the Dutch
West India Company. After the British drove the Dutch out in 1688,
the settlement was granted a city charter and renamed for the Duke of
Albany.
Begin your journey into Albany’s past at our Albany Heritage Area
Visitors Center at Historic Quackenbush Square. View a magnificent
orientation film and wonderful exhibits tracing the history of New York
State’s Capital City. In addition, the Quackenbush House, built in 1736,
is the oldest remaining Dutch building still standing in the city and is
now the Olde English Pub! We invite you to explore the story of
American history that Albany, An Amazing Discovery, has to offer.
