Welcome to our new season of Weekly Films at
Draíocht. We have broadened and increased our
programme to include contemporary releases
and also children’s films. Some of the films we
might screen have not been certified by the Irish
Censorship Office yet. In order to screen these
films we still need to operate as a film club, so
a nominal fee has now been integrated into the
ticket price for all films. As a result you will be
able to purchase tickets at a fixed standard price
without having to join a film club.
Our new prices for film screenings are €7.50 full
price and €6 concession, which we hope you will
still think is very good value.

Kevin is a little prince… at least that’s what his
mum tells him. Kevin likes the idea of being a
prince on a horse, a beautiful brown horse with
a white splotch down his nose and galloping
across the kingdom. His Kingdom. From his

a tall building (one of eight in a row), Kevin can
go anywhere. And he wants to go. Far away from
here. So his towering imagination takes him on
some high-flying adventures. But there’s a storm
coming and he needs to decide what’s real and
what’s not real as his fast paced fantasies land
with a spectacular bump right there on his bed.
Far Away from Me is a new theatre show written
and directed by Amy Conroy, inspired by The
Princess and the Pea and infused with the wild
energy of aerial performance, dance music and

growing social problem of internet addiction. Having
developed a tolerance to 56k dial up early in his
life, the Spin1038 presenter found himself needing
stronger and faster batches of WiFi to get the
same buzz as before. A dependency and dangerous
addiction soon followed. The highly entertaining and
thought provoking show will deal with everything
from sleep deprivation to the Illuminati and hopefully
inspire more people to seek help and take back

the toolbox, but Pakie knows a thing or two about

The 18 strong Percy French Troubadours invite
you to join with them for this evening of songs,
poems and sketches by Percy French. Featuring
all-time favourites ‘Are ye right there Michael?’,
‘The Darling Girl from Clare’, ‘The Four Farrellys’
and ‘Abdul Abulbul Amir’ (Percy’s first successful
song). They’ll even give you a sheet with all the
words to sing along! Having already raised over
€40K for a variety of charities, this night will be in
aid of St Francis Hospice, D15.
Blackfella Charlie is getting older, and he’s out
of sorts. The intervention is making life more
difficult on his remote community, what with
the proper policing of whitefella laws that don’t
generally make much sense, and Charlie’s kin
seeming more interested in going along with
things than doing anything about it.
With remaining traces of Charlie’s traditional
way of life with his aboriginal community fast
disappearing, he decides to take off and go back
to the old way. But in doing so sets off a chain
of events in his life that has him return to his
community chastened, and somewhat the wiser.

The Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl crossed
the Pacific Ocean in a balsawood raft in 1947,
together with five men, to prove that South
Americans back in pre-Columbian times could
have crossed the ocean and settled on Polynesian
islands. Roenning and Sandberg’s masterful
account of Heyerdahl’s staggeringly brave journey is
unerringly faithful to the original story, as we follow
Heyerdahl gathering financing for the trip with
loans and donations, before setting off on an epic
101 day-long journey across 8,000 kilometers.

effect. Two of Italy’s leading actresses star in this
story based on Stephen Amidon’s best-selling
book of the same name that twists love, class, and
ambition into a singular, true-life story.

Following the sell-out success of ‘Swan Lake’,
hailed as ‘one of the best productions’ the
company has done (Irish Mail on Sunday), Ballet
Ireland return to Draíocht with ‘Tutus & Beyond’, a
mixed programme which journeys from traditional
classical ballet to the striking contemporary
work being produced today. Firstly comes Pas de
Quatre – the romantic classic caused a sensation
when it was created for the four greatest
ballerinas of the time in 1845, who not wanting to
share the spotlight, never danced together ever
again! Next up, Sing Sing Sing, inspired by Bob
Fosse, a legendary choreographer of Broadway
and Hollywood throughout the 60s and 70s.
The second half of the programme features the
premiere of a powerful and magical new ballet,
‘Lost’, by Ludovic Ondiviela, who has taken
inspiration from Irish mythology and Irish Faeries
in the creation of this touching work.
Eastern Boys (2013)

They come from all over Eastern Europe: Russia,
Romania, Ukraine. They are Eastern boys. They
hang around the Gare du Nord train station in
Paris. They might be prostitutes, no-one knows
for certain. Muller, a discreet man in his late 50s
has his eye on one of them – Marek. The young
man agrees to come visit Muller the following day,
however, when the doorbell rings, Muller doesn’t
have the faintest idea that he has fallen into a trap.
Maeve’s House

It was as if the magazine in my hands had become a mirror.
After a sell-out run at the Abbey Theatre and an international tour to New
York, ‘Maeve’s House’ is back on tour as part of the Bealtaine Festival.
This delightful one man show is written by and stars Eamon Morrissey, one of
Ireland’s best loved actors. Maeve Brennan was one of our greatest short story
writers. Although she lived in New York, many of her finest stories are set in
48 Cherryfield Avenue, Ranelagh, Dublin where she grew up. By coincidence
Eamon Morrissey was brought up in the same house. While performing on
Broadway, Eamon was surprised to discover his family home in Maeve’s vivid
writing in The New Yorker. He was compelled to meet this enigmatic and
mysterious woman. This beautiful poignant story features extracts from Maeve
Brennan’s writing and presents a moving portrait of two artists in conversation
across generations. Eamon Morrissey has been one of Ireland’s best loved
actors for over fifty years. He has been involved in over one hundred productions
at the Abbey Theatre and is also a well-known face on RTÉ’s Fair City.

with attempts at having a civilized discussion about
whose child is responsible for the fight quickly
devolving into finger-pointing, name-calling,
stomping around and throwing things. The parents
become increasingly agitated, relationships become
strained and the evening sinks into absolute chaos.
New Yorker Mathias (Kevin Kline) journeys to
Paris after learning that he’s inherited a spacious
apartment from his estranged father. Mathias
hopes to simply liquidate his new property and
return home, but his plan hits a snag when he
discovers that the elderly Mathilde (Maggie
Smith) and her daughter (Kristin Scott Thomas)
are inhabiting the space and have no inclination
– nor a legally enforceable reason – to leave. The
apartment, he learns, is what the French call a
viager, which, in accordance with centuries-old
tradition, will not revert to his possession until
its present occupant passes away.
Writer-Director Israel Horovitz has created a
witty and resonant blend of light comedy and
heartfelt drama, in every sense, a mature work
and the product of a master storyteller.

the musical talents of students studying with
local guitar tutor, John McLoughlin. The concert

John’s aim is to create a positive and relaxed
atmosphere; to allow students to flourish and enjoy
the experience of performing.
Life for the unassuming John May (Eddie Marsan
– ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’ (2008), ‘War Horse’ (2011))
has always revolved around his work for the local
council in South London, finding the next of kin of
those who have died alone. Profoundly dedicated
to his work, he believes that everyone deserves a
dignified exit, and writes eulogies and organizes
funerals for those who wouldn’t have them
otherwise. But when a new case – an elderly
alcoholic in a flat directly opposite his own – hits
him harder than usual, he journeys outside
London to track down the man’s long-abandoned
daughter (Joanne Froggatt “Downton Abbey”).
Against the odds, the two lonely souls are drawn
to each other – and John’s outlook starts to open
to life’s possibilities.

one of Ireland’s foremost songwriters Jimmy
MacCarthy.
Jimmy will pay homage to old favourites such
as ‘Neidin’, while introducing more recent work
such as ‘Andalucian Gray’ and ‘Children of Mile’.
A native of Macroom Co. Cork Jimmy MacCarthy
was singing in pubs and busking from an early
age. His first single ‘Miles of Eyes’ was released
in 1981 and from there he went on to create some
of the most well-known songs in the Irish folk
and contemporary repertoire such as ‘Ride On’,
‘No Frontiers’, ‘Katie’, ‘The Bright Blue Rose’,
‘The Contender’, ‘Mystic Lipstick’, ‘Missing you’
and many more.

this fabric craft workshop that allows pupils to turn
an old white t-shirt into an artistic masterpiece.

capoeira is a unique art form that blends
acrobatics, martial arts, dance, percussion, singing
and tradition in a single mesmerizing jogo (game).
During these Comedy Workshops, pupils will be
encouraged to explore their funny side, learn to
create humour, make jokes and act funny.
Team-taught by two facilitators, these workshops
from Waltons New School of Music provide a
creative and comprehensive way for participants
to develop their sense of music and rhythm,
exercise, learn a martial art and be exposed to the
Portuguese language and Brazilian culture, while
playing in a group and having fun!
Teachers will also be provided with suggested
follow-up activities for classroom use.
Integrating the look and respond element of the
primary curriculum, trained comedy performers,

elements of our gallery exhibitions, in a fun and

This section of the Leaving Certificate exam paper
often includes a question on visiting an exhibition
or a gallery space. Facilitated by artist Andrew
Carson, this tour gives students an opportunity
to ask questions and find out further information
about Draíocht’s exhibitions, focus on how we
layout, install, display and light work. They will
also have an opportunity to make notes, sketches
and diagrams.

Draíocht in Partnership with Fingal County
Council Arts Office and a group of young people
aged 14–18 years from Dublin 15, have begun the
first steps towards establishing a Filmmaking
Club in Draíocht.
Throughout the Spring & Summer, D15 Youth
Theatre members are working on script,
performance, direction, settings and staging to
bring you their first fully scripted performance
in July. DNA, written by Dennis Kelly and codirected by Eimear Morrissey and Mark Rogers
will run on 3rd and 4th July 2015.
This July Draíocht is delighted to be back working
with the Daughters of Charity’s Summer ’Connect
Club’ in Laurel Lodge.
Club members, working with CreateSchool,
are currently learning about the language of
filmmaking, scripting, storyboarding and the
technical aspects of filmmaking during weekly
practical hands-on sessions.
The goal is to make a film to a professional
standard and screen it in late April … perhaps
even enter it into a film festival.

The camp, catering for young people with varying
degrees of intellectual disability aims to provide
an outlet that is fun and focused on the individual’s

Want to learn how to make your own films? Over
these 4 days, facilitated by CreateSchool, you will
collaborate with other creatives to plan, script,
storyboard, film, edit and learn how to effectively
add audio to produce your own short films.
Using mobile digital devices and a selection of apps
you will gain skills and tips that you can take home
and master with your own projects. The workshop
will conclude with a screening of the films.
These workshops are an initiative of Fingal
Arts Office.
For the third year, Song School return with this
workshop for those who are interested in writing
and recording songs, performing a concert, making
a video, learning about music technology, and
meeting people who love music as much as they
do … not to mention forming bands and having fun!
Participants receive a CD of their songs, a DVD of
their videos, and a certificate of participation.

Photographs taken of the early 1900s circus community in the USA were
an inspiration for Bartosz Kolata as he began to work on this collection
of paintings, Circus. By combining figures from this enchanting era with
modern day people, Kolata explores the humour and absurdity of human
nature. With the inclusion of spectacular vintage acrobats, clowns, animals
and freaks, Circus explores the dark, pessimistic view that human existence
has no sublime meaning or value. This exhibition sees the circus, which is
usually considered a place of fun and excitement, stripped of these romantic
and sentimental ideals. It is a compelling, dark, and at times humorous,
exploration into human nature through sublime and alluring painting.
Jenny’s work is an emotional response to light and space, exploring
the concept of place. The predominant mood behind her work is
one of dense stillness and unhindered horizon, a sense of quiet and
restfulness; an empty place, as if the subject has simply stepped out.
Her canvases can appear empty, cold and pared back, but on closer
inspection are rich with subtle texture and tone, her colours muted,
almost monochrome at times, like the diffused sunlight on an overcast
day; indistinct structures nestling within this abstract place veiled by a
transparent mist. The composition evolves as the process of applying
plaster and oil paint begins.

upon becoming aware of our Self

Sally-Anne’s work is based around the various projections of the self that
are presented by a subject and how this can be reflected in the different
faces and lives of a site or location. She is interested in exploring the trace
people leave behind them in a space and what story this can tell. Her
work is an exploration into the discarding of identity, the instability and
interchangeability of the self and the curated subject; the different versions
of a person that they choose to share with different people in different
platforms or situations. Through several methods of mold making, casting
and making copies of the subject she creates objects that are based on the
subject themselves in a variety of different materials. A copy of a copy, or
a version of a version, something that is made from the original, but in the
process of making becomes forever altered.
Sally-Anne Kelly is a visual artist based in Dublin. She works in a variety of
mediums including sculpture, photography and performance. In 2011 she
graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London. In
2010 she studied experimental scenography and movement at the Jacques
Lecoq International School in Paris after completing her BA in DIT.

Prōferō – to bring forth, show, offer, discover or reveal.

The work in Prōferō is the result of a fascination with the phenomena of
light, movement, perception and space. They are the result of observation
and they function to reveal the artificial ecosystem that exists between the
viewer and these intangible elements. They co-exist in a state of continual
flux, changes occurring in one facet having a perceptible impact on the
others. The pieces are experimental in nature and this exploratory process
is as important as the finished piece. The unpredictability of the techniques
used is key to discovery, revealing previously overlooked properties and
characteristics. Commonplace materials, such as light, glass, and lenses
are used, showing their potential to act in surprising ways, distorting and
obscuring the very things it is their function to reveal. Maintaining the
material’s original form is important so it can be experienced in new ways,
revealing the extraordinary residing within the heart of the ordinary. The
curiosity of the viewer is rewarded as their interaction shows them to be a
catalyst, ‘activating’ the works and bringing to light latent potential in the
materials and the beauty of the natural laws that create them.
Helen Mac Mahon is a Dublin based artist working primarily with installation
and sculpture. She graduated from Fine Art, DIT in 2013. She is currently a
member of Ormond Studios, an artist run collective in Dublin City Centre.

Marc Guinan
THUR 23 JULY – SAT 03 OCT 2015 GROUND FLOOR GALLERY
Guinan’s physical exploitation of paint forces the viewer to reconsider the
difference between paint and illustration. His work directly questions the space
in which his paintings are shown, whilst unlocking the possibilities concerning
the materiality of paint. Throughout his practice, paint becomes a conjuring
tool and coupled with preconceived human ideas on traditional aesthetics,
Guinan is at home. He creates schematic, sculptural environments through
the medium of paint that invite a dialogue of provocation through proportion,
form and colour. Guinan’s intention is to unfold a series of questions around
the traditional and conventional ways of thinking concerning painting and its
presentation within the gallery space. By diverting his paintings away from the
canvas, each piece develops an organic feel. Guinan invites the viewer’s eye to
travel between movement and stillness. Each piece of work is independent and
autonomous, altering the material qualities of paint and yet each work is also
part of a series in which a mode of action and reaction may be experienced.
Marc Guinan is a local artist living in Ongar, Dublin 15. A final year student
in DIT, with a background in construction, he has continually allowed this
combined experience to influence and inform his art making practice. This
experience has also complimented and defined his line of inquiry and his
ability to experiment and push the boundaries of paint.

Kevin works in film and photography, writing texts which feature in
accompanying publications or as dialogue in the films. A recent project,
Everything Disappears, was made in Taiwan with five local participants as
performers. Portrayals of the participants unravel across intimate scenes
to surreal staged events, reflecting on ideas of self-image and identity. The
spoken words of the characters bring us through a series of psychological
landscapes, reflecting on the relationships we have with ourselves and our
native countries. Another project, Seeing Colours in an Oil Slick, explores the
remnants of lead and coal mining infrastructure which remain on the Irish
landscape, using performance as a tool to re-activate the spaces.
Using a variety of media, including, paper craft, sculpture, video and sound,
Andrew’s work explores the simultaneously isolating and liberating effects of
communication and interpersonal relations conducted through ‘black mirror’
devices such as mobile phones, tablets, computers, etc. These devices exist
as access points for accessing global knowledge and communication, and
yet create a physical void when used as tools for human interaction. Andrew
will use his time as Artist in Residence to develop a new body of work, and
encourages members of the public to visit him and exchange stories, anecdotes,
and thoughts about communication, miscommunication, and visual art. Andrew
Carson, a Dublin based artist, graduated from DIT with a BA Fine Art in 2010.

Clown Through Mask was devised by Canadian
Richard Pochinko (1946-1989), and draws from
the Amerindian tradition of clown and modern
European performance clown (Lecoq) to provide a
comprehensive system of work that articulates:
• A function for the modern performance clown
• A definition of clown theatre
Clown is the most beautiful art form. The red nose
is a mask. All masks have an inherent character,
a master that must be served. The red nose,
the smallest mask in the world, articulates the
character of the wearer. The clown.
And provides:
• The Building of a Personal Mythology to release the individual performer’s creativity
• Exercises to allow students implement &
practice new performance skills
The clown’s function is to say what needs to be said
and do what needs to be done. The clown’s tool is
the clown’s own humanity - the clown’s experience.
The clown’s modus operandi is play - the clown’s
innocence.
Veronica Coburn is the author of ‘Clown Through
Mask – The Pioneering Work of Richard Pochinko
as Practised by Sue Morrison’. Written in
collaboration with Sue Morrison, it is published
by Intellect Press. She was a founder member
of Barabbas - Ireland’s first dedicated physical
theatre/clown company. As Draíocht’s Theatre
Artist in Residence she runs Hallelujah! Draíocht’s
Community Clown Choir. For Tiger Dublin Fringe
2014, Veronica wrote and directed ‘Bernarda’s
