President’s Message

April, the sun is warming us, the flowers are blooming,
and the long cold winter is finally over. Our maintenance
crew has been very busy this winter. They touched up the
auditorium, redid the real estate office, cleaned the back
closet, and redid the security office. Having a travel agent
on site has been very successful, and our residents are
enjoying the trips. The DEP is going forward on schedule,
and Federal is continuing to piggyback wells so Greenbriar
stays green and the pool is full. A not so gentle reminder,
your garbage and recycling cans belong either in your
garage or follow the guidelines in the resolution that was
passed last March, or you will be fined. Anything you

MUSIC AND THE ARTS
What are you most looking forward to now that
the weather is finally breaking?
At our February meeting we were presented with an
array of antique hats that were demonstrated by Kathy
Shaloo, from Brielle. Kathy brought many hats which she
has collected over the years. She has had a love for hats
since she was a young girl. At one end of the table she had
her mother’s hats which she called the Rose collection and
the other end contained her mother-in-laws hats which
she named the Ivy collection. Kathy donned some of her
favorites and she looked beautiful in each one. It was a fun
way to spend a cold winter’s afternoon.

Ladies Golf
The first meeting of Ladies Golf will be held
on April 28th at 9:30 am in the clubhouse. Dues of
$10 will be collected. All ladies must also join the
regular Golf Club at the meeting following, the Ladies
meeting, the cost is also $10. Golf lessons will be
offered to members every Thursday in May at 8:00
am at a cost of $5. New Memebers are welcome. Any

THE RULE OF ELEVEN
The “Rule of 11” applies to both declarer and defenders
whenever “4th best” is led. It is used to determine where
the higher cards are in the suit that is led, and thus what
you need to play to win the trick.
Let’s say that your partner is on lead against 3NT.
Partner leads the 5. It is evident that your partner is doing the usual lead against NT - 4th from their longest and
strongest suit. So subtract 5 from 11 leaving 6 cards higher
than the 5. Let’s say the dummy is showing the
A94. So subtract another 3 leaving 2. Let’s say that you
hold the K102. You hold 2 higher than the 5 so you know
that declarer does not hold any. You may choose to play
the K or the 10. Either will win.
Let’s say that you are the declarer in 3NT and the opening
lead is the 6. Subtract 6 from 11 leaving 5 cards higher
than the 6 out. Your dummy has the A1093 and your
hand has the Q82. Since you have all 5 cards higher than
the 6, you know that dummy’s 8 will win.
You are declarer and the opening lead is the ©5. Your
dummy comes down with the ©KJ1096. What card should

Generations - Jill Holand

Jill Holland is one of two children. Her younger
brother, Jack, lives in Maine. Did anyone notice they
are Jack and Jill? This is an example of her mother’s
sense of humor. Born in Summit, Jill lived in South
Plainfield as a child and went through its school system
up to 10th grade. Her favorite teacher was Mr. DeCarlo, a science teacher who she remembers smoked a
cigarette in class after lunch, then he would put it under
a glass to teach the lesson: lack of oxygen extinguishes
fire. He did this every day! She also remembers high
school in Union going out to lunch for a burger and
fries for 75 cents. “I disliked gym, so I skipped it a lot.
The gym uniform was a one-piece outift that snapped
up the front, not cute. I went to the same high school
as my mom and had some of the same teachers: Miss
Hart for bookkeeping and Miss Baker for steno, who
both seemed to be 110 years old when I had them. My
favorite subject was English, a language that is just
about obsolete today.”
“South Plainfield was a small town, with a closeknit community and I had many friends. We often took
the bus to Plainfield to shop or go to the movies, as
our little town didn’t have more than a small grocery
and pharmacy. I remember the movies cost 35 cents,
and 10 cents for popcorn.”
“Many weekends were spent at my grandmother’s
home in Union. She and my uncle owned the Olympic
Florist. There were 13 dirt-floored green houses which,
I’m sure, gave me my love of gardening. Oma was
like an Auntie Mame to me. She took me into New
York City, to Radio City Music Hall and we also saw
many Broadway shows. What I remember fondly were
all the times we ate at the Horn and Hardart Automat.
The place intrigued me, hundreds of glass doors with
their enclosed enticements, a dime bought a piece of
pie, a quarter for a sandwich (some times two pieces
of pie instead of a sandwich). Oma was progressive
for her day, traveling around the world in her 60’s after
retiring from Victory Engineering. I have a photo of
her riding a camel in Egypt! In addition to all the European countries, she also visited Cuba a few times.”
“I was always too busy for hobbies as a teenager,
but I enjoyed playing hooky, Friday night dances,
collecting 45 rpm records, and shopping. At 15 I got
a job as a waitress in a little diner after school and on
Saturdays. I earned enough to buy the things I wanted.
Our family had one of the first black and white TV’s
in a cabinet with a phonograph, so our living room
was a popular place. A special treasure for me was
my little transistor radio that I could take everywhere.
In 1964 my mother, brother, and I moved in with my
grandmother who bought a house two blocks from the
ocean in Point Pleasant Beach. If I remember correctly,
it cost $16,000!”
“At 18 I married my high school sweetheart. We
have four children, two boys and two girls. They all
live nearby in Point Pleasant and Point Pleasant Beach.
(Kristine lives in Greenbriar now!) I have 6 grandchildren ages 4-29 (4 boys and 2 girls) I enjoy traveling
and have been to 27 Caribbean islands, Spain, Italy,
Belgium, Switzerland, Central and South America,
Mexico, and Puerto Rico. I just returned from Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta. Life is Good.”
At the time of the interview, grandchildren Harry
and Phoebe were visiting and are in the photo. Jill is
one VERY busy person.

March has arrived and it is time to remember St. Patrick’s Day, the “wearing of the green” & other traditions.
St. Patrick’s Day is both a cultural and religious celebration occuring annually on 17 March, the death date of the
patron saint of Ireland (c. AD 385 - 461).
That day commemorates St. Patrick & the arrival of Christianity in Ireland as well as celebrating the heritage and
culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve parades and festivals and the wearing of green attire.
St. Patrick is believed to have been born in Roman Britain in the 4th Century. According to the “Declaration” which
was allegedy written by Patrick himself, he was kidnapped at age 16, by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic
Ireland, where he spend 6 years working as a shephard. There he “found God”. Later he escaped, made his way back
home and went on to become a priest.
According to tradition, Patrick returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. Legend says he used the
3-leaf shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to Irish pagans. This story first appeared in writing in 1726, though it may
be older. In pagan Ireland, three was a significant number as they had many triple Deities.
The color green has been associated with Ireland since at least the 1640s and green ribbons and shamrocks have
been worn on St. Patrick’s Day since at least the 1680s.
Every year on March 17, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe this day with parades, dancing,
special foods and a whole lot of green.

Motiuon to Approve Architectural Report by Donna Curtis
2nd Bill Petrolino. All in favor Motion passed.
Nanette L’Hernault read the Open Public Meetings statement
Motion to approve Pickle Ball Court to be installed on side
of clubhouse in the amount of $4,500 by Bill Petrolino 2nd
Donna Curtis. All in favor Motion passed.
Roll Call: Cathy Ericksen, Donna Curtis, Carolyn Rubino,
Bill Petrolino, Bob Gannon, and Nanette L’Hernault were
present. Jim O’Keefe & Mary Keaney were absent.
President Rubino thanked the TV crew. Jack Shaughnessy
and Ray Zimmer on Camera, Carl Nigro and Ron Williams
on Console, Art Cullen & Joe Boyle on sound.
Cathy Ericksen read the minutes of the December 16th
meeting. Motion to approve minutes by Bill Petrolino. 2nd
Bob Gannon. All in favor Motion passed.
Caroyln Rubino gave the treasurer’s report. It will be
posted.
Nanette L’Hernault gave the administrators report. It will
be posted.
Carolyn Rubino gave the President’s report.
New Business
Motion to Approve an Ansell Suppression System for
auditorium stoves not to exceed $20,000 by Bill Petrolino
2nd Donna Curtis. All in favor Motion passed.
Old business: None
Bill announced the St. Patrick’s Day dinner dance will be
held on March 7th. The cost will be $20.00
Public Comment
Sue Pickell 49 Collins Ct. asked the size of the pickle ball
court and where it would be. It will be on the side of the
auditorium and will be 20x40. She also asked if the gym
would be enlarged, it is being discussed by the board. She
also commented on the newspaper.
Les Hoadley 42 Central Ave. resident # 655 asked permission to have a veterans’ committee consisting of himself,
Al Rodriguez, Ray Zimmer, and John Aucone. Permission
granted. The committee will obtain and fly a POW/MIA
flag on the entrance flag pole.
Motion to adjourn by Bill Petrolino. 2nd Donna Curtis. All
in favor. Meeting adjourned.

Time to Take Inventory Part II

In the first article I mentioned conferring with a
professional, namely a bank. I also warned about being
VERY CAREFUL . Following is a TRUE STORY. I
have not embellished any of the facts.
I was called by my banker that they were going to
do an analysis of my finances “To help me achieve my
financial goals”. It sounded interesting so I agreed to
particpate. I was assured that it was FREE. I attended
the first meeting where I was interviewed as to my financial position. I answered every question the banker
asked and was told that I would be contacted soon.
The bad weather we had interfered with the second
meeting, but finally I was summoned to a meeting. My
banker had an excellent plan for me whereby I would
be receiving Fifteen Percent Return on my investment.
I asked if the banker knew how to compute a
return on an investment. The reply was, “You divide
the amount invested into the income received and the
answer would be expressed as a percentage.”
I got up and as I walked out the door I explained
that they had forgotten to divide by time namely in
the example given the return would be less than 1%.
I repeat THIS IS A TRUE STORY BE CAREFUL!
I was very excited about what I was told so I went
to the meeting. This is what I was told: “For example
if I invested $300,000 in a fund for ten years at the end
of that time I would receive $345,000. Which meant
I earned a 15% return on my investment.”

No doubt you have all been enjoying the winter
sports here in Greenbriar. As for myself, I have enjoyed the skiing down Central Boulevard and bob
sledding around Blake Circle. Our lake has frozen
solid and many are having a great time ice skating on
the lake. AHH! Winter time in Greenbriar, you can’t
beat it.
Now, getting back to reality, Kiwanis literally went
to the dogs this past month, but let me explain. Chief
Bergauist came to our meeting on February 12th, and
brought several members of his police force with him.
They included Detective Bevelacque who showed a
digital slide presentation on the sudden rash of scams
targeting Senior Citizens and other subjects to be wary
about. Then Police Officer Cansolo brought along
“Gertrude” a dog who is trained to catch criminals.
Believe me you don’t want to have Gertrude come
after you, that dog has many talents in catching “Bad
Guys”.
The following week we had Officer Catalano pay
us a visit with his trusted friend “Duke” who would
go through a brick wall for his “partner”. These two
are together 24 hours a day. Duke stays at Officer
Catalano’s house when they are off duty. You don’t
want Duke chasing you at any time as he has a steel
grip and only lets go when his Officer gives him the
release command. Also present was an officer from
Toms River K-nine Patrol who also demonstrated what
his animal partner is capable of. Remember when we
were kids and saw Rin Tin Tin at the movies?
On Sunday, February 8th we had a fabulous show
featuring Maggie Worsdale and her husband Tom.
All of Greenbriar was invited but due to our horrible
weather it was not well attended. Everyone thoroughly
enjoyed the afternoon and the songs of World War II
years sung by Maggie Worsdale along with letters pertinent to the war years read by her husband Tom were
outstanding. It brought you back in time and those
songs such as “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” etc.
brought tears to our eyes. These performers are going
to appear in April in South Pacific at the Algonquin.
Thanks go to Marie Dibblee and her kitchen crew
including Helen Bershears, Sally Brooks, Mary Kirchner, and Joan Merola who made cookies and served
them following the concert. Thanks also go to Ann
Rokosny and Margaret Sheridan for selling 50/50

tickets and a super thank you to Danny Potenza who
took care of selling the concert tickets.
Thanks again to Rosalie Rabito for running another bus trip to Atlantic City on Wednesday, February
25th. These events help us raise the necessarty funds
to enable us to fund Kiwanis charities.
See what you miss by not coming to Kiwanis so
don’t forget, we’ll leave the light on for you.

Book Club News

The book discussed at the February 11th meeting was
“Everything Nice” by Ellen Shanman.
The story is about Michaela “Mike” Edwards who has
lost her job in advertising, her apartment and her boyfriend,
a stand-up comedian who used their break-up in his routine!
She is at her wits end when she is coerced into a job
teaching a class in Life Skills to a group of girls at a Charter
School in Manhattan.
Mike was raised by her father, an orthopedic surgeon,
after her mother died when she was four years old. She was
never a sugar and spice, feminine female and only had one
friend, an Aussie journalist, Gunther.
The story is a little slow getting started and most of the
group didn’t like Mike at the beginning, but eventually we
realized that through no fault of her own, she was missing a very important part of her life - how to make friends
and accept that she needed to relate to people in order to
maintain a healthy balance in her life. The girls in her Life
Skills class as well as Gunther, played a very important
role in her “rebirth”.
The book we are reading for the March 11th meeting
is “Elizabeth Street” by Laurie Fabiano.

A psychologist walked around a room while
teaching stress managment to an audience. As
she raised a glass of water, everyone expected
they’d be asked the “half empty or half full”
question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she
inquired: “How heavy is this glass of water?”
Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.
She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t
matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If
I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If
I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my
arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel
numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight
of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I
hold it, the heavier it becomes.”
She continued, “The stresses and worries in life
are like that glass of water. Think about them
for a while and nothing happens. think about
them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if
you think about them all day long, you will feel
paralyzed - incapable of doing anything.”

Recipe Corner Beef Barley Soup
Submitted by Martha Olowiany
1 pound beef top round steak cut into 1/2-inch cubes.
1 tablespoon Canola Oil
3 cans (14 1/2 ounces each) low sodium beef broth
2 cups water
1/3 cup medium pearl barely
1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1/8 teaspoon pepper for taste
1 cup chopped carrots
1/2 cup chopped celery
1/4 cup chopped onion
3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
1 cup frozen peas
In a Dutch oven, brown beef in oil, drain. Stir in the
broth, water, barley, salt and pepper. Reduce heat, cover
and simmer for 1 hour.
Add the carrots, celery, onions and parsley. Cover and
simmer for 45 minutes until meat and vegetables are tender.
Stir in peas and heat through.
Makes 2 1/4 quarts and freezes well.

Audie Murphy’s Wife

Pamela Murphy, widow of WWII hero and, later,
movie, actor, Audie Murphy, died peacefully at her
home on April 8, 2010. She was the widow of the most
decorated WWII hero and actor, Audie Murphy, and
established her own distinctive 35 year career working
as a patient liaison at the Sepulveda Veterans Administration hospital, treating every veteran who visited
the facility as if they were a VIP. Any soldier or Marine who came into the hospital got the same special
treatment from her. She would walk the hallways with
her clipboard in hand making sure her boys got to see
the specialist they needed. If they didn’t, watch out.
Her boys weren’t Medal of Honor recipients or
movie stars like Audie, but that didn’t matter to Pam.
They had served their Country. That was good enough
for her. She never called a veteran by his first name.
It was always “Mister.” Respect came with the job.
“Nobody could cut through VA red tape faster
than Mrs. Murphy,” said veteran Stephen Sherman,
speaking for thousands of veterans she befriended over
the years. “Many times I watched her march a veteran
who had been waiting more than an hour right into
the doctor’s office.”
She was even reprimanded a few times, but it
didn’t matter to Mrs. Murphy. “Only her boys mattered. She was our angel.”
Audie Murphy died broke in a plane crash in 1971,
squandering millions of dollars on gambling, bad
investments, and yes, other women. “Even with the
adultery and desertion at the end, he always remained
my hero.”
She went from a comfortable ranch-style home
in Van Nuys where she raised two sons in a small
apartment - taking a clerk’s job at the nearby VA to
support herself and start paying off her faded movie
star husband’s debts. At first, no one knew who she
was. Soon, though, word spread through the VA that
the nice woman with the clipboard was Audie Murphy’s widow. It was like saying General Patton had
just walked in the front door. Men with tears in their
eyes walked up to her and gave her a hug.
“Thank you,” they said, over and over.
The first couple of years, the hugs were more for
Audie’s memory as a war hero. The last 30 years, they
were for Pam. In 2002, Pam’s job was going to be
eliminated in budget cuts. She was considered “excess
staff.” “I don’t think helping cut down on veterans’
complaints and showing them the respect they deserve
should be considered excess staff.”
Neither did the veterans. They went ballistic, holding a rally for her outside the VA gates. Pretty soon,
word came down from the top of the VA. Pam Murphy
was no longer considered “excess staff.”
She remained working full time at the VA until
2007 when she was 87.
“The last time she was here was a couple of years
ago for the conference we had for homeless veterans,”
said Becky James, coordinator of the VA’s Veterans
history Project. Pam wanted to see if there was anything she could do to help some more of her boys.
Pam Murphy was 90 when she died. What a lady!!

Senior Balance Challenge
Old McDonald says that there are many things you can
buy to help with balance exercises, but for the most part,
the best equipment is the floor. “It’s functionally relevant.
People are not going to walk down the street on a wobble
board.
A high-density foam mat can be helpful, however. She
likes to use the mat for what she calls the “senior balance
challenge.” Here are the stages of the challenge.
1. Stand for 30 seconds, eyes closed.
2. Stand for 30 seconds, looking at the wall, on
a high-density foam mat.
3. Stand for 30 seconds, eyes closed, on highdensity foam mat.

Irish Diplomacy is the art of telling someone to
go to hell, and having them look forward to the trip.
Well, Irish Diplomacy was not needed last night as
great pleasure and good will were plentiful.
The tasty Irish meal (cooked by a German butcher)
was excellent as was the soda bread on each table. We
were exepecting music but were happily surprised
when a WOMAN BAGPIPER came in. When she
played the Armed Forces songs all service personnel
who had served stood for their branch. Upon hearing
“God Bless America” many others attending also
stood.
Over 200 people attended The St. Pat’s Gala - quite
a turnout. Hats off to the trustees and volunteers for
doing such an excellent job. No one had trouble finding their seats as each table with a list of names was
posted in the hallway.
Timely music by SHORE TUNES/JIMMY MAC
kept the dance floor full, at one point, we even had a
Conga Line through the tables.

cold, snowy winter we all endured except for the Snowbirds. I am sure everybody is ready to get out and enjoy an
