President’s Report

Ooh October, bright fall colors, cooler air, and
thoughts of more indoor activities to amuse us. This
month there are two events to keep us entertained:
Vinnie Talarico presented by the Entertainment
Committee and of course a Halloween Cafe Nite. See
you there!
At the August Trustee meeting Mayor Ducey
spoke of issues concerning Greenbriar and Brick
itself. He informed us that the large empty stores that
were formerly Pathmark and A&P are under contract
negotiations; Pathmark to become a food store, and
the A&P a women’s apparel outlet. Also affecting
us in the Brick community is the completion of the
Parkway and exit 91. The Mayor informed us that the
town is not being told any new information. Maybe,
by the time you are reading this, things have changed!
Here in Greenbriar, signs were straightened, roads
were patched, and curbs were inspected. It is helpful
having the Mayor come and address us. He is also
looking into the catch basin at the Lake. All in all the
meeting was productive and informative.
Yes indeed, there are fox, deer, and coyotes
roaming around Greenbriar along with our regular
squirrels and chipmunks. Please do not attempt to
befriend these wild animals!
The snow season is arriving. If you have a medical
necessity for having your driveway plowed please
have your doctor’s letter in the office as soon as
possible. The list is getting large so please be honest in
this matter. We have residents with very real medical
needs for getting emergency plowing.
Bulk pickup and excessive cardboard is a planned
pickup. The trucks will not stop for these extra items
on a regular Monday. Call the DPW to schedule and
they will come.
Please be aware of your neighbors, be safe yourself
(SLOW DOWN) and enjoy yourself!

¿? Question of the Month ¿?
Submitted by Pat McClendon
What 3 people, famous or not, living or dead, would you want at your
fantasy dinner party and why?
Ann Fogler - I would like to meet and talk to Jackie
Kennedy because she had class, style and grace and also
a deep inner strength; she was a beautiful person. Queen
Elizabeth because she is a very impressive person and has
kept her country together. Last, but not least, is Mother
Teresa because of her compassion, caring, charity and
untiring work she did for the poor and unfortunate.
Betty Zimmer - I would love to have my three
deceased siblings - Samuel, Jeanie and Malcolm - to dinner
just to sit and talk about the good times we had growing
up. I love them and miss them.

The summer crop is finished. We suffered through too
much rain, too little rain and some thievery.
It was a great year anyway. We had super-sized
zucchini, tomatoes, corn plants and sunflowers.
Our group is very congenial, responsible, diligent and
professional.
Some fall vegetables will be planted for October
harvest such as radishes and lettuce.
Pictured are Ray Nunamacher showing several 14 foot
Mexican Corn plants and Bill Petrolino with hot peppers
Paulina Tuozzo - Tim Conway because he makes me
laugh and I love to laugh! Fred Astaire because I love to
dance. My late husband and I used to go dancing and we
even won trophies; I loved dancing with him. Perry Como
because he was a romantic singer and I love to sing. I sang
in a choral group when I was in school.

The Electoral College
by Jim Mack
Many people still think that when, on Election
Day, they place an ‘x’ next to the presidential candidate
of their choice they are voting directly for that person.
Not quite! The presidential election is the only one
in the United States where the voters do not have the
right to vote directly for their candidate. Governors,
senators, members of Congress, mayors are chosen
by a majority of popular votes but presidents are not.
What is the Electoral College?
First of all it is not a “College” or a “University”
When on Election Day the citizens vote for President
they are actually voting for electors, selected by the
political parties; pledged to the parties’ candidate.
The number of electors for each party equals the
combined number of that state’s U.S. senators and
representatives. New Jersey has 14 electoral votes. The
candidate getting the majority of the popular vote gets
all the electoral votes of that state. There are a total
538 electors throughout the country. A candidate must
win at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.
About six weeks after the election, electors meet at
their state capitals to cast their ballots directly for
president. (If no candidate for president has a 270 vote
majority then the House of Representatives chooses
the president.)
Does it work?
For the most part, yes it does work; however there
have been three elections where a candidate has won
the popular vote but failed to win the 270 electoral
votes. The last time was in the 2000 election. Al
Gore had 51,003,894 popular votes to 50,459,211
for George Bush, but Bush had 271 electoral votes
to Gore’s 267.
That doesn’t sound fair.
The Electoral College is authorized in the 12th
amendment to our constitution. Our founding fathers
that signed the Declaration of Independence and
formed the Constitution were perhaps the smartest
group of people this country ever had. What was their
reasoning for choosing indirect elections? They feared
that the states with the largest populations would
control elections. If today the voters in California, New
York, Texas, Florida and Illinois would agree on one
candidate then the smaller states such as Wyoming,
Iowa, Utah and New Jersey would have little or no say
as to who would become president. As it is today each
state large or small has a distinctive roll in choosing
the leader of our country. Remember George Bush
won his first election by one vote over the minimum
required. The divergent states of Alaska, Wyoming,
North and South Dakota, Delaware and Vermont
each are alotted three electoral votes which could
possibly change any election and the history of this
country.
Can the Electoral College be abolished?
Critics argue that the Electoral College is archaic,
and gives certain swing states, like Ohio, undue
influence in selecting the president. Proponents
argue that the Electoral College is very important
and that it protects the rights of smaller states.
In order to amend the Constitution, the
amendment must be approved by a 2/3rd majority
vote of Congress and then is sent to each state for
ratification by the states’ Legislatures. Approval is
required by 3/4 of the states or 30 out of 50.
It is almost certain that each of the small states
would vote against giving up what leverage they
have in the elections. It’s safe to say that the Electoral
College, with all its flaws, is here to stay.

Commentary
I just received a raffle book from Kiwanis, tucked
into their yearly directory. Reading over the 2015
raffle distribution, I was unhappily amazed at the
total of $1,943.00 collected and distributed to needy
causes last year. There are 1400 homes in Greenbriar,
if every home bought at $10.00 book of tickets, that
would put the distribution amount at $14,000 instead
of under $2,000. Yes, I realize there are seniors on
fixed incomes living here, but come on, people, we
can certainly do better than last year! You or a family
member may one day be on the receiving end of the
great work Kiwanis does, so open your hearts and
wallets and buy those raffle tickets! Remember, the
more you give, the more is returned to you! You may
even win a prize for your generosity.

The Cameos came to Greenbriar in August to the
delight of the many fans they have here. They sang
songs that we all knew and hummed along with
them. Much to their happiness we here in Greenbriar
continue to be great movers and swayers while
remaining seated. Pat McClendon and her committee
brought us one of our favorite groups. Thank You Pat!

Book Club News
By Pat McClendon and Martha Olowiany
The book discussed at the August 10th meeting
was “Fires in the Dark” by Louise Doughty. This
novel follows the lives of a nomadic Romany family.
Emil, the light-skinned first born of th leader of the
Kalderash Roma Tribe, is born in 1927 just as the Nazi
regime is coming to power in Europe. His family is
eventually incarcerated in a Moravian labor camp and
suffers unspeakable cruelty and eventual death. Emil
is the only one of his family to survive and escapes
to Prague where, because of his light skin and false
papers, he is able to assimilate into the populous and
live out his life.
Most of the members liked the book but thought
it was too descriptive in the details of the torture
that the people endured in the concentration camps.
They felt it was over-powering at times. Many didn’t
realize that the Gypsies, along with many other groups
considered to be “impure” were targeted by the Nazis
during the ethnic cleansing process and wondered
how some of them survived the horrific conditions
that occured there.
This book is not for everyone; it could be too
graphic and upsetting for some, and is very realistc
in content.
The book we are reading for the September 14th
meeting is “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth
Stein.
Plus lunch & snacks for purchase
provided by our Veteran’s Association.

Can you believe it!! Summer is gone; where did it
go? Can you believe it’s fall already! Everybody out
of the pool until next year.
Our Kiwanis Club only met twice during August
but those meetings were memorable due to the fact
that we had Philip Boltz, “Mr. Smoothy”, at the piano.
Talk about Eddy Duchin or Carmen Cavallaro, wow!
His program was all about music from the movies.
He got a standing ovation which he rightly deserved.
He is one of a kind!
Jane Irving, was our next guest. She normally
brings the Coral Group from St. Dominic’s school but
this time she came alone. She entertained us with songs
from the Broadway Stage which included selections
from Oklahoma and Phantom of the Opera.
Work on the annual Greenbriar Phone Book,
which is under the direction of Dennis McGinnis,
has finally been completed and thanks go to him for
a job well done. As in past years the phone book has
a special page for boosters and also a special page
for Memorials. Barbara would like to thank everyone
who signed up for the Booster or Memorial pages as
the amount derived from these two pages help fund
Kiwanis charity work. Our members will be delivering
them to each house during September. Also enclosed in
the package is our annual raffle chaired by Joe Carlin,
and 3 happy winners will be drawn later in the year.
Thanks go to Rosalie Rabito for another successful
Atlantic City trip.
October is the month where we have “changing of
the guard”. This is our time to thank Bob Gannon for
the wonderful year he served as our president and to
swear in our new president Marie Dibblee. Kiwanis
is indeed extremely fortunate to have such fantastic
leaders. This year’s luncheon will be held at the Spring
Lake Manor and will be chaired by Georgia Murray.
As always we look forward to programs every
week secured by Neil Moran, and we will leave the
light on for you should you wish to attend one of our
meetings.
The names of Art and Judy Cullen and Jeane
Crone should have been part of the Booster page in
the 2016-2017 telephone book.

My mom, she’s ‘bout the swellest cook
Of anyone I know
An’ she can make the nicest things
From just a piece of dough.
She makes the sweetest cookies an’
The most delicious pies
An’ as a master of that art,
She more than qualifies.
On Sunday morning, Pop an’ I
Are wakened by the smell
Of buckwheat cakes an’ bacon that
My mom can fix so well.
When she has set the table with
Those things that taste so good,
We always are devourin’ more
Than anyone should.
She says it makes her happy just
Because we like to eat,
But how can anyone resist
Such a culinary treat!
His sister’s reply: Just patch it on your hips!

Computer Club News
By Elma Perry
“Computers are not User-Friendly but we are”
Some newer members have asked us how our
Computer Club originally began. In October 2008
Pat Herlihy wrote a memo about the origins of the
Greenbriar Computer Club: Excerpted from her
memo:
“The Greenbriar Computer Club came into
existence in the late 1990s as an outgrowth of the
Scientists and Engineers Club. It served a population
that was anxious to learn about this new world that
was unfolding in front of their eyes. The club began
with the donations of resident’s equipment.”
Residents who were knowledgeable were willing
to share their information. Some of them updated the
donated computers and loaned them to some residents
for instruction. Some members were able to solve
problems that new computer users were encountering.
In a world so new, everyone was able to help and
everyone was able to learn. A good mixture and the
basis of many new friendships in Greenbriar, which is
a good reason for the existence of such a club.
In its beginning, we were all huddled around one or
two computers to learn of its many potentials. In 2003,
the members chipped in to purchase a used projector.
Now, we could present information and instructions
to a much larger audience. We tried the World Wide
Web. We experimented with WebTV and the first uses
of digital cameras.
Now we are holding our elections online, and also
distribute our minutes of the meetings and treasurer’s
report online.
Topics of many kinds are presented. Even our
Greenbriar Times monthly magazine is available to
us online.
Yes, we are proud and excited about the Greenbriar
Computer Club. I believe it is serving the community
well.
My own first experience with our Computer Club
was in the Spring of 2002. I had moved to Greenbriar

The Club had its first Annual Picnic in Flo
Saviello’s backyard on August 20, 2008, when she
still lived on Central Blvd. The 9th Annual Picnic was
held on August 18, 2016. The club will also hold its
9th annual Christmas party this year.
Over the past years, a number of different people
have been named as Officers of the Club, or taking
an active part in its functions. Marilyn Lombardi,
Barry Johnson, Jim Mechtel, Mary Lou Gravatt and
others. Mrs. Dorothy Bett had been the Computer
Club News person before my assignment to it. In
2007, Joel Strasser edited and published a Computer
Club Newsletter which had local library and other
computer news.
In Octover 2006, Dick Saviello was lsited as
Treasurer of the Club. In October 2007, he was listed
as President.
Dick has been instrumental in initiating a number
of things that have been beneficial to the Club and
also to Greenbriar.
In the spring of 2002, Dick met with Comcast to
explore Internet access for the Club, which was not
yet available to the Computer Club. In August 2002
Comcast agreed to provide three complimentary hispeed hook-ups. This was very well received by all
members.
Also, in 2002 our Computer Club affiliated with
www.activeyoungseniors.com, joining several other
Senior Community Computer Clubs in Ocean County
for their activities.
Perhaps you have some information about “the
old days” you would like to share. If so, please let us
know and we will pass it on.
Computer Club Meetings are held the 3rd
Thursday of each month at 1:30pm. Refreshments
will be served.

IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Get rid of irritating numbness and pain in your
legs and feet with FDA-cleared treatment
Do you suffer from any of
the following conditions?
Get in on the relief!
“I was diagnosed with peripheral
neuropathy in 2006. My neurologist
prescribed Neurotin, which didn’t help.
After treatment of MicroVas,
• Numbness
• Pain when you walk
• Sharp, electrical-like pain
• Burning or tingling
• Difficulty sleeping from
leg or foot discomfort
• Muscle weakness
• Sensitivity to touch
Peripheral Neuropathy
is a condition that affects millions of Americans,
commonly resulting in pain, tingling, numbness, and
other painful symptoms in the hands, legs and feet.
This pain changes your life and affects how you work,
how you play and how you live.
What does Peripheral Neuropathy
look like?
Healthy Nerve Cell

Peripheral Nerve Damage?
I sleep better and have better balance.

- Vicki M.
The effects of this program can be felt on the first
few visits. This treatment restores, stabilizes, and
rebuilds the nerves in your extremities. Treatment has
also been effective in addressing painful symptoms
of arthritis, MS, and other forms of chronic pain,
Patients generally feel relief physically throughout
the treatment period and even feel better emotionally
after experiencing a reduction in pain.
Why Northeast Spine & Sports Medicine?
Peripheral neuropathy is the consequence of damage
to your peripheral nerves. There are over 100 different
kinds of peripheral nerve disorders or neuropathies
– some are the result of a disease like diabetes,
while others can be triggered by a viral infection. Still
others are the result of an injury or compression on
the nerves. No matter where the problems begin, it is
imperative nerve disorders are resolved as soon as
possible to prevent permenant damage.
Many people suffer with pain for years, not realizing
that thir symptoms may be due to Peripheral
Neuropathy. Symptoms start gradually, then get
worse, including numbness, burning or tingling
sensations and sharp, electrical-like pain. Treatment
options have been limited to a small assortment of
pain medications, which can lead to futher issues.
Ignoring the problem or masking the symptoms has
never been a viable solution. If you suffer from any of
the aforementioned symptoms, we can help.

Anna’s Spiritual Garden
I recently had what turned into a serious discussion
with my friend, Joe Bayer. Joe is a deep thinker, and
someone I enjoy conversing with. We were talking
about attitudes, when he said something I thought
was profound, because of how attitude effects what
we communicate.
Well Joe, I have a wonderful mentor, who states
it best!
Attitdue by Charles Swindoll:
“The longer I live, I realize the impact of attitude
on life. Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It
is more important than the past, than education, than
money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is,
more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill.
It will make or break a company...a church...a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day,
regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.
We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact
that people will act in a certain way, and we cannot
change the inevitable. The only thing we can do, is
play the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I
am convinced that life is 10% of what happens to me,
and 90% how I react to it! And so it is with you. We
are in charge of our attitudes!!!
So Joe, I trust your profound statement, “We
should all leave our attitudes at the gate.”
See you on the path, love and peace, Anna

Greenbriar’s New Neighbors
Submitted by Carolyn Rubino
Joseph and Dorothy Tomaszewski resided in
Linden, New Jersey before coming to Greenbriar.
He is a retired warehouseman from Shop Rite, a job
he did for 32 years. Dorothy is a housewife. Joseph
and Dorothy love how peaceful Greenbriar is. Their
neighbors are wonderful. They are always willing to
help in any way they can. The Tomaszewskis both
feel the bus service is really great. They are both so
happy that they made the right move by coming to
Greenbriar. Their first night here they couldn’t sleep
it was so quiet.

Let’s Meet:
Robert Mundie
As many of his
Greenbriar neighbors, Robert
was born in Jersey City. His
great-grandfather, Cormac
Brogan, left Belfast in 1849
to work as a blacksmith in the
coal mines of Pennsylvania.
The next generation moved
to New Jersey to find safer
employment.
Robert grew up in colorful downtown Bayonne in
the 50’s and 60’s. He graduated St. Peter College, got
married and moved to Woodbridge. Robert commuted
to Manhattan to work for an import-export company.
By the time he was thirty, his marriage was over and he
was ready for a big change. He drove his ‘76 Mustang
cross country with a promise of a job interview in
California. That twist of fate led him to five years in
San Francisco, seven years in Denver and a year in
Dallas.
Robert came back to Greenbriar to help care
for his 90 year old father. When Robert’s dad died,
Robert stayed on in Greenbriar and we’re so glad he
did! He’s a member of Kiwanis, volunteers at bingo,
and helps with the in-house TV station. Robert enjoys
many of Greenbriar’s amenities, including the pool
and the gym.
The things that keep Robert busy are his guitar
playing, keeping up with Dilbert, technology, and
bike riding. He attends music concerts and was at
Woodstock in the 60’s, has seen Janis Joplin, The
Who, Bruce, Rolling Stones, Dylan, and many other
rock bands.
Robert enjoys traveling three times a year. This
year so far he has been to Columbia, Greece and
Spain. He’s been all over Europe, also Israel, Egypt,
Syria, India, China, Australia, Indonesia, and Peru.
Singapore is on his list for the near future!
After all his wanderings, Robert claims he’s
always happy to return to Greenbriar.

Public Comment:
Carmela Schiessl, 23 Pheasant Dr. commented
that neighbors are not cleaning up after their dogs and
leaving messes on her lawn. She also asked for help
from security with parking for a Bocce Tournament

residents to pick up after their dogs and that anyone
not cleaning up will be fined. It will be arranged for
security to help with the Bocce games.
Pete Lametta, 143 Blake Cir., complained about
shrubs damaged during snow last winter. Carolyn
explained that LMS had looked at the shrubs and said
it was damage from heavy snow and not the plow, so
they would not replace them.
Greenbriar does not replace shrubs damaged by
snow and if he still was unhappy he would have to
speak to LMS.
Joe Boyle, 39 Patmore Rd., said the Voting
Commitee would like to use the bus for the next
election to bring residents to the clubhouse to vote.
The trustees will discuss and see if that is possible.
Les Hoadley, 42 Central Blvd., resident #566 let us
know that the ribbon cutting for the Gazebo will be on

“Sue’s Smile Corner”
Submitted by: Sue Barrett
After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Walmart. Unfortunately, like most
men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most
women; she loves to browse.
Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Walmart.
Dear Mrs. Woolf, Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. we
cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against
your husband, Mr. Woolf, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras.
1. July 2: Set all the alarms in Housewares to go off at 5 minute intervals.
2. August 4: Went to the service desk and tried to reserve a bag of chips.
3. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers they could come in if
they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department - to which twenty children obliged.
4. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, “Why can’t you
people just leave me alone?” Emergency Medics were called.
5. September 5: Looked right into the security camera and use it as a mirror while he picked his nose.
6. September 10: While handling guns in the sports department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants
were.
7. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his ‘Madonna look’ by using different sizes of funnels.
8. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled “PICK ME! PICK ME!”
9. October 22: Took a box of condoms to the checkout clerk and asked where the fitting room was.
And last but not least:
10. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, and then yelled very loudly, “Hey!
There’s no toilet paper in here.” One of the staff passed out.
