HIGHLAND PARK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 3300 Mockingbird Lane Dallas, TX 75205 www.hpumc.org 214.521.3111 UMW May 2015 HPUMC UMW NEWS is published monthly February - May and September - December. Please send any newsletter submissions or changes of contact information (address, telephone, email) to: Kay Fulton UMW Newsletter Chair [email protected] 214.538.9974 MAY 2015 DINNER PROGRAM Creativity for Peace: the Story of Palestinian and Israeli Young Women Becoming Friends Monday, May 4, 2015 Speakers include: 6:30 to 8:30pm HPUMC Room 329 Mai Shbeta is 24 years old, was born and raised in Wahat al Salam-Neve Shalom (Oasis of Peace), the only intentional Jewish-Arab village in Israel, and will soon become an attorney. Based on the African proverb, “If you educate a man, you educate a person. But if you educate a woman, you build a good nation,” Creativity for Peace is an exchange program for Palestinian and Israeli adolescent girls and young women designed to train them as leaders by breaking down barriers of anger and prejudice, facilitating friendships, and inspiring action to promote peace. Yuval Dadush is 23 years old, grew up in Kibbutz Kfar Hanassi in the north of Israel, served in the Israeli army as a commander of basic training, and is now creating a project that encourages young women to be social activists. Make plans to join UMW for dinner and an overview of a unique Palestinian-Israeli cultural exchange program fostering peace and reconciliation through in-depth training and mentoring of tomorrow’s diverse female leaders from the West Bank, Gaza, and Israel. The President’s Message Dear UMW Friends, Summer is soon approaching. UMW will take a break from meetings and programs over the summer, but that doesn’t mean that we should! Get involved in a mission project this summer: volunteer at Wesley-Rankin Community Center, help out at Vacation Bible School, or make Chrismons with Circle 8 who will be meeting over the summer. One activity that I’ve found very rewarding is being a Dallas County CASA volunteer. Find what fits your interests and passion! Look in your UMW directory for UMW-supported agencies and contact them to see how you can help. Summer is also a great time to connect informally with UMW friends. We are planning an informal salad potluck luncheon for Saturday, July 11. We will let you know location and more details soon as possible. And be sure to visit our church library and check out one of our UMW books for your summer reading. Allow God to Wear Your Face by Alice Knotts and Outcasts United by Warren St. John are two of my favorites, as is the book suggested by our UMW Reading Program Chairs. Happy Summer! Marie McCoy Marie McCoy, [email protected], 214.457.7564 UMW 2015 THEME Supporting Methodist Women through intergenerational fellowship, friendships, and opportunities to foster a deepening relationship with God through outreach and mission. “The woman is blest who does her best, and leaves the rest to God.” Inspired by Psalm 37:3 Deema Yusuf is 19, was born in Jerusalem, and grew up in Ramallah, Palestine. Last year with an Israeli colleague, Deema gave more than 20 talks in the US that focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, its impact on daily life in Palestine, the power of education to combat ignorance and intolerance, and the urgent need for peace. Here is one you may want to try: “If You Know Who You Are, You Will Know What to Do: Living with Integrity” by Ronald J. Greer Drawing on his experience as a Christian, a minister, and a pastoral counselor, Ronald J. Greer explores two sides of integrity: personal integrity and moral integrity. A timely look at the importance of integrity, it’s about who we are and how we live that out, both when someone’s watching and when there is not a soul in sight. For the full Reading List for 2015 and previous years, go to www.umwmissionresources.org/t/categories/reading-program or contact Marilyn Jordan, [email protected], 214.675.9308, or Betty Lou Winslow, [email protected], 214.823.1331 with questions about the UMW Reading Program. KATIE FRANK SLACK Katie Frank Slack, longtime HPUMC UMW leader, MDMC Auxiliary liaison to UMW, and loyal member of Circle 9, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, March 14, 2015 after suffering a stroke in February. Her sense of style (she was never less than fashionably dressed at all times), her organization and preparedness, her early arrival for all meetings, her knowledge of the scriptures, her generosity of spirit and mentoring to UMW leaders and members, and that megawatt smile and confidence she displayed when reminding you to buy pecans at Christmas time to benefit the Methodist Dallas Medical Center Auxiliary: Katie Frank was a faithful servant of our Lord Jesus Christ, a one-of-akind treasure, and a model of true dignity, independence, and grace. WANTED: UMW LEADERS TO SERVE IN 2016 Are you interested in serving in a leadership position for HPUMC UMW next year? HPUMC UMW wants you! Self-nominations for all elected officers (with the exception of the 2016 President) and appointed positions are now being accepted. Term of service: January-December 2016. HPUMC UMW extends prayers of sympathy, comfort, and peace to Katie Frank’s family and circle of friends. At her request, there was no memorial service or published obituary. We will dearly miss Katie Frank Slack. If you would like to honor her, financial gifts in Katie Frank’s memory may be made to one of the following: •HPUMC UMW, c/o Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75205. Please indicate “Slack/MDMC Auxiliary” or “Slack/UMW Gift in Memory” in the memo line of your check; or •United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) - donate online: http://www.umcor.org/Search-for-Projects Katie Frank always loved having fellow HPUMC UMW members join her at a MDMC Auxiliary meeting, especially the special May and December luncheons. Some past and present UMW officers plan to honor Katie Frank by attending the upcoming Thursday, May 7 luncheon. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Janice Brown at [email protected], 214.348.3818 by Thursday, April 15 so she can make you a lunch reservation.
