Nestle-Aland Greek-English New Testament J ohn 20:30-31 gives us an initial starting point for considering the purpose for which John writes his unique gospel. Believing that Jesus is the source of salvation is indeed paramount, but also believing that Jesus is the Christ or Messiah who is the Son of God made in the likeness of man. As a result, the Johannine Christ is regarded by many as the most human and the most transcendent of the representations given to Jesus by the evangelists. There are many ways to examine John’s teaching concerning the nature of Christ. The two main methods are to consider the titles and ways that John refers to Jesus and the evidence which supports the humanity and divinity of Jesus Christ in his gospel narrative. On the one hand we find where Jesus is most human. He becomes tired; He eats and drinks by the well; and He grieves at the death of Lazarus. On the other hand we find where Jesus is most omnipotent. He is the ladder of communication between divinity and humanity; He openly claims equality with God; He speaks of His own pre-existence; and He has the power to take up His own life again. In general, the Johannine Christology does not have the same emphasis on the many acts of Jesus that are found in the Synoptics. Instead there is a priority placed on the teachings of Jesus, with some very lengthy discourses recorded. With this accentuation, it is surprising to note that the Johannine Christology contains no parables, which is a common method of teaching in the Synoptics employed by Jesus. Secondly, John does not include the Sermon on the Mount, the Sermon on the Plain, or any of the ethical ‘sayings’ of Jesus. Instead, the speeches of Christ tend to revolve around Himself and His identity. With this in mind, you are invited to attend the 71st Annual National Lectureship which will convene in the “Windy City” of Chicago, Illinois, during the dates of April 5-9, 2015. Our theme is entitled “Celebrating the Covenant” with a focus on the deity of Jesus Christ and with expositions taken from the Johannine Christology.
