THE PRAYERS AND BIBLE READINGS
COLLECT: God our redeemer, you have delivered us from the power of darkness
and brought us into the kingdom of your Son: grant, that as by his death he has
recalled us to life, so by his continual presence in us he may raise us to eternal joy;

One of the early divisions in the Church was over the issue of salvation for the
Gentiles. Peter has advocated preaching to the people of Israel alone, until a dream
convinced him otherwise. Now, the Holy Spirit is given to the Gentiles, leaving the
Church with the question of whether it will follow where the Spirit of God leads.

1 John 5.1-6

Continuing the great theme of love, the author tells us that it is by our obedience to
God that his love will be made known in the world. Faith in God, and obedience to
his commandments, can overcome anything the world may put in our way. And we
are not left alone: the Spirit of God guides us and works in us, and God has given gifts
of grace to the Church to sustain us (the references to water and blood in v.6 are
often interpreted as referring to baptism and the eucharist).

John 15.9-17

Jesus’ teaching is a way of preparing his disciples for his coming death, resurrection
and ascension. Soon, he will no longer be physically present with them and they must
continue his work. After telling them that he is the ‘true vine’ (as we heard last
week) Jesus goes on to tell his disciples that they must bear fruit, which they can do
by abiding in him. In the Old Testament, it was counted an honour to be a ‘servant of
God’. Now, Jesus tells his disciples they will be counted not as servants but as his
friends: they are to be united with him in ministry.
POST COMMUNION PRAYER:
God our Father, whose Son Jesus Christ
gives the water of eternal life: may we
thirst for you, the spring of life and
source of goodness, through him who is
alive and reigns, now and for ever.
