SUMMARY
Detention Officers enforce the rules and regulations governing the operation of the detention center, including the confinement, safety, health,
and protection of detainees, as well as supervising the various work assignments of detainees. May require arduous physical exertion to subdue
B detainees who may be armed or violent. May provide leadership and guidance to less experienced Detention Officers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – Including, but not limited to:
 Conducts or performs numerous detainee security duties, including but not limited to: head counts, searches, sample-taking and
handling, completing log books, reports, and other documents, and patrolling perimeter and various areas of the facility.
Communicates with appropriate designated posts for all entering and departing traffic. Assists in the processing of detainees being
admitted to or discharged from the facility. Immediately reports any incident or issue relative to assigned post.
 Provides supervision, care, custody, and control of detainees while remaining concerned with maintenance of facility security
contributing to the health and welfare of the detainees. May perform personal searches, including pat-down and strip searches, in
accordance with facility and ICE procedures.
 Enforces rules and regulations governing facility security, detainee accountability, and conduct to ensure judicial sanctions are carried
out and detainees remain in custody. Performs searches and patrols of housing units and other locations. Provide facility escort to
detainees, visitors, contractors, and others as directed by the Shift Commander. Provide break relief as assigned.
 May be authorized to use physical force, including deadly force, to maintain control of detainees.
 Is subject to being in such hostile or life-threatening situations as riots, assaults, and escape attempts. Exercises sound judgment in

making instantaneous decisions affecting life, well-being, civil liberties and property which cannot be reviewed prior to implementation
and which may subject the decision-maker to legal liabilities, including personal sanctions.
 Must successfully complete specialized detention training, self-defense, management of medical emergencies, safety management,
and interpersonal communication skills.
 Must adhere to high standards of personal conduct both on and off the job and is subject to sanctions for misconduct.
 Utilizes information as to operations and procedures as provided by post orders, ICE program statements, policies and procedures
manuals, internal correspondence, and staff training and meetings; be flexible and have a broad knowledge base to use own initiative
in the resolution of problem situations.
 Along with all other detention facility employees, is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the facility. The staff detention
officer’s responsibilities supersedes all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.
 Stays up-to-date on departmental and facility safety standards and applicable codes and policies.
 Will perform other duties as assigned.

Must be 21 years of age or older.
Must have three years prior security, law enforcement, or military experience.
A high school diploma or equivalent required.
PREFERRED:
A degree in law enforcement, criminal justice or similar related field of study is highly desirable and may substitute for law enforcement
experience on a year for year basis, upon approval of department management.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work areas will include all areas of the secured facility, and works in close proximity to detainee population, may occasionally work alone. Is often
exposed to sharp objects and blood borne pathogens. Exposed to extreme heat with some noise and chemicals, and in a moist or dry environment
with exposure to vibration. Overall demands of this position can be strenuous.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
[May be required to stand, sit, squat, bend and kneel frequently and walk for extended periods of time, occasionally climbs stairs. Required to lift 50
lbs. or less frequently and often lifts 50-65 lbs. Often required to grip, squeeze and repetitively use fine hand movements. Often works with arms
