Amana First Responders’
seek volunteers
The Amana First Responders’ are currently
looking for volunteers in the community that are
interested in helping others. Over the recent
years, the Amana First Responders have lost a
tremendous amount of volunteers, which has resulted in a great stress load for the current team.
In fact, the year of 2014 brought a record low response rate of 37%!
Being a first responder team, our goal is to
maintain the quality and efficiency of basic life
support until a responding ambulance arrives on
scene. Opportunities for getting a certification
paid for are available for those who are interested! If you feel like you are an individual who
would like to help make a difference in improving
our response rate, please contact Josh Bern at

From the Best to the Wurst:
New Events in Amana This Year
The year 2015 will go down in Amana’s history
as a very busy year with several new events on
our community calendar. The good folks at the
Amana Colonies Convention and Visitors Bureau
maintain a calendar which is updated regularly
and posted on their web page, so you can check
their website for a full list.
If you or your group is hosting an event that is
open to the public and would like to promote your
event, contact the ACCVB office to learn how to
add your event to the community schedule and
ACCVB webpage.
Here are our new 2015 events for you to note:
April 18 – The annual Amana Arts Guild
Communal Supper has been moved from
mid-November to mid-April and will be, for the
first time ever, a spring event. We expect Gloria Alexander and her crew will be cooking up a
“spring storm” of goodness. Only about 80 seats
are available so make your reservations early.
May 9 – Shepherd’s Market at the Amana Woolen Mill. Just a week after our annual
Maifest look forward to this gathering of 30 plus
textile artists, spinners, weavers and yes, shepherds, bringing their hand-made goods, yarns,
fibers and textile products to the Woolen Mill. Shop for yarn, weavings and more, see demonstrations and displays.
June 5 – Amana Colonies Farmers Market
begins. While not new, this is a change. This
year the Amana Colonies Farmers Markets will
begin in June rather than May, thus insuring time
for local gardeners to get their gardens in and
grow produce to sell. The markets will be Fridays
4 to 7 p.m. in Homestead same as year’s past!
June 20 – Amana Colonies Wurst Fest. Our
new fest is the Wurst fest! Everything sausage
will be celebrated with sausage-makers from
across the state participating. Look for the Wurst
University, sausage tasting, sausage-inspired
games and fun. At the Market Barn in Amana.
July 2 – 4 –Firecracker Fourth of July Antique Show. This show has been expanded
to three days at the Amana Colonies RV Park.
Amana is proud to host some of the best antique
dealers in the country.
August 1 – Horseshoe Pitching Tournament. A National Horse Show Pitching Association (NHPA) sanctioned tournament will be held
at the Amana Colonies RV Park. Yes, your team
can sign up to compete, but you must be “card
holding members.” (though we are told membership is easy to obtain.) For more information, contact 319-321-0747.
November 14 – Shepherd’s Market at the
Amana Woolen Mill. Just in time for your holiday crafts, the shepherd’s, weavers, spinner and
local fiber artists will be back at the mill.
They Deserve Our Thanks:
Maipole Co-Chairs Retiring
We want to recognize and thank the two young
women who have organized and led our Maipole
dancing team these past several years.
Sarah Lentz and Dawn Ball of Amana have
coordinated the Maipole dance team and have
done a tremendous job, recruiting dancers, holding rehearsals, organizing costumes and coordinating the schedule. They have helped keep an
important community tradition alive in the Colonies. As events coordinator Elly Cutler noted, “The Maipole dancers are an important part of

After Maifest 2015, both young women will be
stepping down as co-organizers and will be passing the ribbons on to Heidi Baugh, Tricia Ward
and Emilie Trumpold, but we hope to see both
young woman dancing with the Maipole troupe
for years to come.
“It truly does take a village to put on a festival
and Sarah and Dawn have stepped up and done
it for several years, working very, very hard to
organize and coordinate the details. We Maipole
dancers want to recognize all their hard work and
say thank you!” said Heidi Baugh.
“Iowa’s Memorial Day Weekend Tradition”
The IOWA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL returns
to Middle Amana Park in the heart of the Amana
Colonies for its 24th year of history re-enactments and family fun. This year’s event runs May
23, 24 and 25 from 11am to 6pm.
For 2015 the entertainment roster will be enhanced with more performers and shows. At the
top of the bill is the most popular act from the
Minnesota Renaissance Festival: the Fandazzi
Fire Circus with elaborate choreography and
high-energy music, considered one of the most
polished fire dance acts on the national festival
circuit. Also new on the roster this year will be
the singing and fighting Bawdy Buccaneers from
Des Moines and Evangard Improv from Omaha.
Returning will be the equestrian spectacle performed by the armored knights of Joust Evolution.
With the expanded grounds allowing for an additional living history realm and combat arena,
several other new show groups can be experienced as part of an inter-active outdoor museum
experience. In all there will be 21 professional
performing troupes offering 55 scheduled shows
a day.
Favorite aspects of the regional faire are the
many specialty food and drink stalls, the beer
garden and wine shop, the fifty artisan crafts
merchants, various trades and folkways demonstrations, games of skill for all age interests, the
more than 100 strolling village characters, and
presentations designed for children.
Tickets for the Iowa Renaissance Festival &
Gathering o’Celts can be had at the entrance
gate with adult admission at $10 and kids from 6
to 13 at $6. Children’s admission and parking are

instructor, the Amana Arts Guild will hold a writer’s workshop, for adults, between 10:00 AM and
2:00 PM at the Art Center, in High Amana. Workshop fee: $40
During our high energy, focused yet flexible time together, we’ll plunge into strategies
to spark creativity and to free the “writer within.” And we’ll have fun all the while, because serious
work requires serious play. We’ll write quickly to
stay ahead of the inner critic, and boldly to outsmart the censor. We’ll dabble in poetry, life stories, monologue and more. Plan to generate all
new writing, and in good workshop fashion, we’ll
share our pieces as time allows.

Feathers in the wind
What is it about having a family who seems to
always find your “good” scissors and using them to
cut paper, wire or anything else that will no longer
all the scissors to cut?
I have a special pair of scissors that anyone in
our family would know were not only off limits, bit a
lecture of intense proportions will take place if they
so much at try to use them.
The scissors are small and are used only for embroidery projects or possibly to cut a piece of yarn. They have bright orange finger holders so if you do
not know that these scissors are not used to cut
wire, flower stems, whatever the color will give one
a clue to not touch under penalty of…well I have not
quite figured out what until that “someone” will get if
HE so much as even approaches the scissors.
I could not find my scissors for over a week. I
keep them in one place so I knew something was
up. I even checked chair cushions to make sure
that they had not slipped and fallen into a chair
crevice.
Finally, one day, I found them on the table they
were supposed to be. Okay I know I overlook
things, but not scissors I need on a regular basis.
I asked Charlemagne if he had seen them, but he
faked sleep. It was odd that he woke right up when
it was time to play “Jeopardy” on television. It was
also odd as to how dull the scissors were.
I gave him yet another chance until I found a pair
of scissors near the mail. Then I found yet another
pair of scissors near the kitchen sink. Today I found
still another pair of scissors on top of a desk.
None of these scissors were the nice round edge
scissors I bought especially for him to use when
he cuts paper. They were also not the sturdy scissors I bought for him to cut wire with. They were all
GOOD scissors which I like to use to cut material,
thread, etc.
Something odd was going on. It took me a few
days of just watching this man in action. In the process I even found TWO (not just one) of the magnifying glasses I had been looking for.
Then I found the answer when Carmen quite innocently asked Charlemagne about gardening. All
of a sudden I “found” that he had been getting the
mail and going through it before I got it.
No, it was not a love letter from some secret
admirer, but requests for seeds from people who
garden and had found that he had certain seeds to
offer via the “Seed Savers Exchange” in Decorah. He also had ordered seeds on his own.
Naturally these packages either had to be
wrapped and sent or opened and checked out. This all required Charlemagne to look for a scissor
(I guess a letter opener was not good enough).

Yes, it is time for the garden. That will also mean
he will be cutting plants, grafting, or pruning all
which requires a sharp instrument…namely a scissor.
Charlemagne obviously feels that all scissors belong to HIM so if he comes to your house you better
keep a close eye on your scissors. B.S.H.

For the next 4 to 6 weeks the Service Company will be changing out all of the electric & water meters in Amana with new AMR (automatic
meter reading) meters, starting in Girlstown and
going on from there.
To replace the water meters they will need access to your basement and it will take about 15
to 20 minutes to complete the task. Changing the
electric meter will only take a couple minutes but
will interrupt your power, leaving flashing lights
on clocks, etc.
If you have a preferred time for change out,

Amana Poetry Competition
Calling all writers of poetry and prose! The BiAnnual Poetry and Prose contest offers poets and
writers an opportunity to have their writing read at
the Amana Poetry, Prose and Song Celebration
on Saturday May 2, 2015. This event will be held
at the Amana Arts Guild, High Amana. Contest
winners will receive award certificates.
Any person or group of any age may enter. There is no entry fee. Categories include: Adult and Students
Contest Deadline is April 4
Entries must have for their subject matter a
connection to the Amanas-past, present or future. Any form rhymed or unrhymed may be
used. Types of poems include historical (factual), narrative (storytelling), descriptive (a person
or place) or lyric (expressing feelings). The language may be English or German or a combination of the two.
Each poem must be on a separate page with
the author’s name and address placed in the upper left corner of the title page. No more than
two poems by one author will be accepted. Joint
authorship or collaborations by groups will be accepted.
Prose pieces of fewer than 500 words may
be entered in the Prose division. These pieces
should also have an Amana theme and include
the author’s name and address on the title page.
All poems and prose must be delivered to the
Amana School-Community Library on or before
the deadline April 4, 2015. The contest is sponsored by the Amana Library and the Amana Arts
Guild.
