3D Printing
Starting us on another maddening journey into another dimension
Whether it be the development of body parts, transforming an engineering concept to a
prototype in a matter of minutes or needing a new tool on the International Space Station,
3D is an amazingly new approach to manufacturing. 3D printing (or additive
manufacturing, AM) is any of various processes used to make a three-dimensional object.
In 3D printing, additive processes are used, in which successive layers of material are laid
down under computer control. These objects can be of almost any shape or geometry, and
are produced from a 3D model or other electronic data source. A 3D printer is a type of
industrial robot. More recently the meaning of the term has expanded to encompass a wider
variety of techniques such as extrusion and sintering based processes. Technical standards
generally use the term additive manufacturing for this broader sense.
Brad Phillips B Eng Adelaide University is the deputy Engineering Manager at
GDLS-Australia has held a number of positions at BAE Systems, BAE Systems Australia
and Tenneco. He is playing a lead role in developing the capability of GDLS-A in
establishing this new capability and exploiting it to maximise its engineering benefits.
