UP student receives prestigious Golden Key Award

In February this year, UP B Com (Accounting Sciences) final year student, Irfaan Ganchi was awarded the
prestigious 2013 Undergraduate Achievement Scholarship Award by the Golden Key International Honour
Society. This prestigious accolade included a scholarship award of $5 000.00 USD.
The Golden Key’s Undergraduate Achievement Scholarship was created to assist students with the costs
associated with higher education. The scholarship recognizes undergraduate members for outstanding
commitment to the Golden Key pillars of academics, leadership and service. Irfaan embodied the pillars for
which Golden Key stand and they were delighted to assist him in making his dreams a reality. Succeeding in
higher education and helping students reach their potential is at the core of Golden Key’s mission. “I feel extremely privileged and honoured to have received this prestigious and generous accolade. Many
thanks to the Golden Key International Honour Society for placing confidence in my academic abilities”, said
Irfaan on receiving the award. He went on to thank UP for providing an excellent academic environment for
him to thrive in and his lecturers for tapping into his potential. He especially thanked Junior Tukkie and
specifically Mr Fred Ratshisevhe for the part they played in his studies thus far. He also expressed his
gratitude towards his parents, who have been a pillar of support and strength throughout his studies. Irfaan
urged his fellow students to persevere in their endeavours and not to forget that a journey of a thousand
miles starts with but a single step, in the right direction. Prof JGI Oberholster, the CA Programme Manager at UP, praised Irfaan on receiving this award, stating that
the Golden Key award per se served as an important inspiration to fellow students to strive to achieve to the
best of their abilities. He continued that in 2013, Irfaan was part of the top ten Taxation students out of a
group of approximately eight hundred second year students. He was also the group leader of the team that
was placed second in the regional round of the KPMG International Business Competition. “We are proud to have a student of this calibre in the faculty and have no doubt about his abilities to excel,
given that he achieved distinctions in seven of the eight modules he registered for in his second year of
studies (2013). We do hope that his above-mentioned qualities and achievements will pave the way for
acceptance towards the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship programme”, said Prof Oberholster. Nancy Chamlee, the Scholarship Coordinator of the Golden Key International Honour Society, commented:
“We are very proud to have Irfaan as a Golden Key member. On behalf of the Golden Key Board of
Directors, the Volunteer Leadership, and Headquarters Staff, we extend to him our heartfelt congratulations
