The Sheppey Promenade Festival 2014 will have a WW1 Sheppey Commemoration theme and feature a re enactment of a 'Pals Promenade. Recruitment Parade' including marching bands and a concert (Working title for evening, with an afternoon workshop to make floating poppy the Festival 2014 lanterns. The publication will have interactive elements where pages will contain additional information or oral history recordings of life on Sheppey during WW1. Young people volunteering will be able to gain a nationally recognised qualification; level 1 or 2 Special Edition WW1 Arts Awards sponsored by the Imperial War Museum. Creating an exhibition called 'Reflections of Lower Halstow in 1914' in the church open Aug 2, 3 & 4 2014. This WW1 project will also culminate in the publication of a booklet which will tell the story of Lower Halstow's brave volunteers as a local legacy document. To provide a portable display (in partnership with the Historical Research Group of Sittingbourne) which will portray the key aspects of Sittingbourne's contribution to WW1 and feature information about key individuals who had links to Sittingbourne. To be launched at Sittingbourne Library 6 October 2014. The Faversham Society will deliver five exhibitions and website programmes with the theme of 'A Commemoration of Faversham 1914 - 1918 WW1'. Undertaking extensive research with the help of volunteers and the Fleur de Lis Learning Manager to deliver and bring to life the WW1 years in Faversham. 29/01/2015 750.00 300.00 750.00 750.00 Swale Borough Council WW1 Commemoration Project Localism Grant Scheme Awards 11 12 02/06/2014 12/06/2014 13 19/06/2014 14 30/06/2014 15 17/07/2014 16 27/07/2014 The Sittingbourne Home Front Group will take the parlour of the ‘War Time House’ (East Street, Sittingbourne) back to 1914 and through living history a family will relay their stories and history of the house in WW1. These stories will be factual events of the building which was a forge during this time. We will also run a short Old Forge Wartime film, made by a local amateur film maker, about a young man’s House fictional experience during WW1. Sittingbourne & Milton District Scouts Summer camp will have a WW1 theme for 2014. The grant application will fund commemorative badges for up to 400 of the Borough's young boys and girls aged between 8 and 15. These will be tangible memories of the camp, their First World War learning and achievements in passing the scouting tests of the time, replicated from a book by Baden Powell published in 1914. Staging of a production at the theatre which will highlight the role and experiences of women in WW1. The production will touch where possible on local history and encompass real events. It will involve Swale residents acting, singing and the use of cinema. The Avenue Providing audience members with both entertainment and an Theatre education of the role of women in WW1. Incorporation of 'WW1 commemorative activities' in the village fete Upchurch Village 2014. Grant of £150 approved, pending payment - awaiting Fete Committee organisational bank account for payment. To support a 'Great War Commemorative Tea Party' at Eastling Village Hall on August 24th. Live entertainment from 2pm - 6pm. A tree will be decorated appropriately to remember the local fallen with their story attached. The village beacon will also be lit and the two village churches open for private prayer on the evening of August 4th. 120.00 To support local residents participation in the national 'Lights Out WW1 Commemoration Project'. Purchase of cross light, advertising The Salvation Army - and refreshments for an event on August 4th in the Salvation Army Sittingbourne Corps Hall in Shortlands Road, Sittingbourne. 143.00 Hartlip Parish Council 21/08/2014 Leysdown Village Hall Committee 16/09/2014 Sittingbourne Orpheus Choral Society WW1 Commemorative activity in Leysdown associated with the installation of a new bandstand on The Spinney. The bandstand will be used for a WW1 commemorative event in memory of the fallen. Members of Sittingbourne Orpheus Choral Society will form part of the UK representation joining choirs from Belgium, France and Germany to sing in Ypres Cathedral on October 18th 2014. The event will be a 'mass service' to remember all those who perished in Ypres, civilian as well as military. Invitation to participate has been requested in recognition of the civic twinning between Sittingbourne and Ypres. 2230 (Sittingbourne) Squadron, Air Training Corps Members of the Cadet Unit will travel to Ypres 18 -19 October to commemorate the centenary anniversary of WW1. Spending time to pay their respects at both Allied and German war cemeteries and visit the Ypres Museum. They will also participate in the 'Last Post Ceremony' at the Menin Gate Memorial and lay a wreath on behalf of the Squadron and the Town. 24/09/2014 14/10/2014 The project is to supply Royal British Legion Remembrance crosses, each to be inscribed with the individual names of 563 people from Sheppey who lost their lives in WW1. Local school children will be asked to place each cross in the lawn at the Isle of Sheppey The Sheppey War Cenotaph. Increased awareness of the total loss of life on Sheppey Memorial Trust during WW1. 29/01/2015 750.00 450.00 750.00 400.00 Swale Borough Council WW1 Commemoration Project Localism Grant Scheme Awards 23 24 25 Swale Sings will tour the villages and rural areas of Swale bringing music, poetry and prose to suitable venues such as village and church halls, residential and care homes enhancing understanding of the sacreifices made in WW1 through word and song. 375.00 28/10/2014 The SRA is working with the Historical Research Group of Sittingbourne (HRGS) to commemorate the Centenary of WW1. Both organisations being active members of the WW1 VC Commemoration Working Group coordinated by Swale Borough Council. An A2 size poster has been produced which lists the fallen from the Centenary year of 1914 from Sittingbourne and surrounding area. The SRA have also purchased poppies which, with the poster will be displayed in participating shops in the Town Centre Sittingbourne Retail and beyond during the annual Remembrance period and to support Association the VC Commemoration activity on November 9th. 375.00 06/11/2014 Following the successful participation in the Ypres Memorial Service on Sunday October 19th, the Choral Society have been requested to sing at several locations during Armistice this year including St Georges Church in Ypres and Passchendale, with the Canadians and Black Watch. Note: This is the second grant application to support participation in commemorative activity from the Choral Society. In total both grant requests do not exceed the maximum grant allocation of £750 for the financial year. 200.00 15/10/2014 Swale Sings Sittingbourne Orpheus Choral Society 29/01/2015 Swale Borough Council WW1 Commemoration Project Localism Grant Scheme Awards 26 13/11/2014 27 16/12/2014 Challenger Troop CIC provided representation and support at WW1 VC Working Group meetings to develop the VC Stone Dedication Service and Parade for Donald Dean VC. Provided Parade Marshal and coordinated the briefing and participation of other groups during the VC Stone Commemorative Event. Challenger Troop provided cadets who supported commemorative activities in Sittingbourne on both Nov 8 & 9 and brought logistical resources as back up as required. The grant is made as a contribution towards Challenger Troop costs of supporting the Council in delivering the VC Stone Dedication CIC and Parade Event. Contribution towards the costs of restoration work on the WW1 Memorial Plaque in Bobbing Church. To preserve an important historical link to the past history of Bobbing and for descendants of Bobbing Parish those who died to visit in years to come and see the respect in which Council these brave people are held. 07/01/2015 Contribution towards the costs of delivering the Government's objective to honour recipients of the Victoria Cross during the WW1 in respect of Sir Philip Neame. A commemorative event, service and reception took place on December 19th 2014 during which the unveiling of a paving stone was observed by the local community, family and invited guests. The Town Council worked with Shepherd Neame and the Royal Engineers and local suppliers to deliver the project to keep costs down and the welcomes the opportunity for a WW1 Grant contribution from SBC to meet the final budget requirement. 28 Faversham Town Council 29/01/2015 416.50 750.00 750.00 Swale Borough Council WW1 Commemoration Project Localism Grant Scheme Awards 29 30 13/01/2015 21/01/2015 Provision of a central point for the local community to visit and interrogate the 'Interactive Touch Screen WW1 Roll of Honour Memorial'. As part of a WW1 Exhibition at a Unit in The Forum which will have information, photographs and mementoes relating to Historical Research WW1. To raise awareness of the role played by individuals and the Group of community within the area covered by Swale Borough Council during Sittingbourne WW1. Contribution towards research costs and production of interpretation boards to create and display biopics of those named on the Parish Memorial. The Lynsted with Kingsdown Society is working with the Rector for the cluster of Kingsdown and Creekside (7 parishes) and history groups where they exist in the Parish. Lynsted with Adding research into all those lost across these parishes to inform Kingsdown Society Commemoration in each church on the centenary of the deaths. Total value of WW1 Centenary Project Grants paid 01/04/2014 31/03/2015 750.00 261.50 15000.00 Swale Borough Councillors allocated £10,000 in localism grant funding in April 2014 from which the World War 1 Steering Group can award small grants, up to the maximum value of £750 to support local community projects commemorating the WW1 Centenary in Swale. Following the interest and amount of applications received a further £5,000 was added to the grant pot to make a total of £15,000 available in the financial year until March 2015. Grant applications were processed upon receipt to enable projects to be delivered throughout the year, with funds being allocated on a first come first served basis. It is currently proposed subject to budget decisions at Full Council in February to make this grant scheme and the associated funds available during each year of the WW1 Centenary through until 2018-19.
