Orthopædic Institute for Children (OIC) was founded in 1911 as Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital. Focused solely on musculoskeletal conditions in children, OIC provides 60,000 patient visits
each year. In alliance with UCLA Health and with the support of the OIC Foundation, OIC advances pediatric orthopaedics worldwide through outstanding patient care, medical education and

MISSION
The mission of Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) is to provide outstanding care for patients with musculoskeletal
disorders and through the support of the Orthopaedic Foundation, to provide care for children regardless of ability to
pay and to advance care worldwide for all musculoskeletal patients through medical education and scientific research.
VISION
Orthopaedic Institute for Children, in partnership with UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, will become the preeminent provider of pediatric orthopaedic care, education and research.

from Mexico and other countries have been
treated through OIC's International Children's
Program since 1961.
Through OIC's alliance with UCLA, the new
Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital opened in 2012, bringing
expanded programs to children.
In 2007 the Orthopaedic Hospital Research
Center opened on the UCLA Westwood campus, which created the largest coordinated
orthopaedic research effort in the USA.

LEADERSHIP
Anthony Scaduto
Dr. Anthony Scaduto is President and Chief Executive
Officer at Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) and the
Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Santa Monica-UCLA
Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital. He joined OIC in
January 2009 as the Lowman Professor of Pediatric Orthopaedics, Medical Director, Fellowship Director, and Chief
of Staff, and continues in those roles today. He provides
specialized orthopaedic care for pediatric patients at the
downtown Los Angeles campus, the Luskin Children's Clinic in Santa Monica, and the Valley Orthopaedic Clinic in
Calexico. Dr. Scaduto received his bachelor's and medical
degrees from UCLA and completed his pediatric orthopaedic fellowship at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children
in Dallas. Dr. Scaduto previously held academic appointments at Shriner's Hospital for Children in Los Angeles and
Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
Michael Sullivan
Mr. Sullivan is Vice President/Chief Philanthropy Officer at
Orthopaedic Institute for Children. He has an impressive
record of fundraising for healthcare institutions in academic environments. Previously, as Chief Development
Officer, he raised nearly $100 million at two specialty institutes affiliated with Harvard Medical School: Joslin Diabetes Center and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. He also
developed innovative brand-building campaigns for these
institutes and is experienced in all aspects of fundraising
including major naming donations, capital campaigns, corporate and celebrity sponsorship and targeted campaigns
for faculty recruitment and research. He is experienced
working with hospital boards and support groups and
stewarding high profile donors with a variety of events
and programs including a donor concierge service.

THE POSITION
The Director, Foundation Relations reports to the Vice President, Chief Philanthropy Officer and is responsible for implementation
of OIC’s Foundation fundraising efforts. She/he will be responsible for planning and directing fund-raising strategies to secure annual and multi-year gifts and grants to ensure, through exemplary stewardship, long-term relations with foundation donors. She/
he will have direct access to volunteer leadership and physicians to identify prospective donors and implement solicitation and
cultivation strategies, including proposal submission and report preparation.
Duties and Responsibilities
















Primary responsibility for writing proposals for both unrestricted operating revenue and restricted projects.
Provide timely and accurate reports for all grant funded projects.
Create and implement a strategic plan that will under gird and advance relationships and support for OIC from foundations.
Design an aggressive moves management program focused on cultivating, rating, soliciting and stewarding foundation of
$50,000 and above with the intent of increasing revenue from these sources.
Continuously evaluate and make recommendation for future growth of the Foundation including long-term revenue projections.
Creatively build and sustain innovative programs in collaboration with physicians, researchers and volunteer leadership with
the intent of attracting new philanthropic support to OIC.
Develop foundation proposals on behalf of OIC that include program narratives, budgets, letters of support and collaboration,
CVs of researchers, etc. according to specific requirements of individual foundations.
Create annual reporting/stewardship plans for each foundation grant received with the intention of strengthening relationships with donors.
Work with Finance to transfer and report on funds as necessary.
Actively participate as a key member of the Foundation team, attending weekly meetings and strategizing on prospect cultivation, coordination and management.
Continuously pursue educational opportunities to learn best practices in the areas of grant writing, research, moved management, stewardship and recognition.
Place a high priority on serving internal and external contacts in a timely, courteous manner, following up until needs are met.
Compose and prepare routine correspondence and presentations, including letters and various types of documents.
Attend select meetings as needed and conduct follow-up as appropriate and directed.
Manage portfolio, calendar maintenance, administrative duties and other tasks as assigned.
Use the Foundation database to research donors and their gift histories.

QUALIFICATIONS












Display strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills in coordination of OIC Foundation fundraising
efforts.
Exhibit strong organizational and problem solving skills with
attention to detail and disciplined follow-through to complete assigned tasks and duties with specified deadlines.
Demonstrate an ability to handle multiple assignments
while meeting deadlines, monitoring and meeting goals set
with supervisor.
Independently discern work priorities and be willing to
work evenings/weekends as needed and travel to multiple
locations in the performance of job functions.
Skilled at working with a wide variety of individuals at varying levels and departments of the organization to gain consensus and get tasks completed.
Ability to proofread printed copy in English (required) and
Spanish (preferred).
Ability to speak on a one-to-one basis as well as in a group
setting to convey information, persuade others to accept a
specific course of action or explain policies and procedures.
Skilled in remaining focused on timely completion of professional level work while being continually interrupted by
phone and in person.
Skilled in writing and verbally explaining complex medical
topics to audiences with varying levels of medical
knowledge ranging from none to MD/PhD.
Skilled in working on extremely short deadlines (hours or
minutes) when necessary to complete tasks.

Bachelor’s degree required.
Minimum seven years of fundraising experience, with at
least four years of direct responsibility for foundation giving.
Strong organizational, administration, telephone and interpersonal communication skills, detail and “big picture”
oriented.
Strong word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheet experience.
Skill in preparing written reports, presentations; solid
writing and editing ability.
Professional demeanor, flexible and able to respond to
multiple demands.
Flexible and able to respond to multiple demands and
adjust work schedule as needed.
Exceed at building and maintaining relationships, online
and in person.
A Team player with the confidence to take the lead and
guide other employees when needed and the ability and
willingness to take responsibility.
Have evident good technical understanding and ability to
pick up new tools quickly.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Power
Point, Microsoft Publisher and Adobe Acrobat required.
Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge preferred and theory
associated with Moves Management.
Written and verbal fluency in English (required) and in
Spanish( preferred).
