Introduction
A5151
Burbo Bank Extension Offshore Wind Farm is to be located
west of the existing Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm,
approximately 7km north of Hoylake and Meols on the Wirral,
8.5km from Crosby Beach and 12.2km from the Point of
Ayr in Wales.
This update provides the latest information about onshore
construction works at the cable landfall on the coast.
DONG Energy remain committed to engaging with local
communities throughout the construction programme.

Preparation works will shortly commence on the Ffrith Beach Complex carpark to set up site support facilities. Temporary site offices and welfare S
facilities for use by the construction team will then be visible. VolkerInfra will be the principle contractor on site performing the Horizontal Directional
Drilling (HDD) throughout the duration of the works, which will start in mid-May.
E
What is Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)
HDD will be used to minimise disturbance to the local community by working underneath ground level without disrupting traffic, and without the need
for diversions and/closures.
It is a trenchless method used to install ducts beneath the ground through which the cable from the offshore wind farm can be pulled. The installed
duct will be used during 2016 to bring the sub-sea cable ashore to link with the onshore cable which will in turn run underground to the onshore
sub-station in St Asaph.
The works require an area known as a HDD rig site from which to start and drive the drill. The drill is then received in another working area called a HDD
exit pit. Following installation, these areas will be reinstated and there will be no permanent installation above the ground. The following illustration is an
example of the HDD rig that will be present on the field South of the railway; this will not be located on the Ffrith Beach site.
Initial plans to drill from the Rhyl Golf Club under the seawall to the beach were modified following feedback from local residents and the community
as a whole based on their concerns. Therefore, the HDD that is to take place during May will cross beneath the railway line, Robin Hood Caravan Park,
the A548 Rhyl Coast Road, Rhyl Golf Club and under the sea wall. The drill will start in a field South of the railway line and end at the beach, as shown
in the illustration below. We do not anticipate that noise or dust will be experienced by residents during the HDD process.
This method and route has been agreed with Denbighshire County Council, the Highways Agency, Network Rail and Natural Resources Wales.

All heavy duty equipment will be delivered to the site by HGVs via the Ffrith Beach access road. No public roads will be closed during the works.
The cable duct to be installed by HDD has been fabricated at a special production facility as one continuous 680 metre long length. Late in May
it will be brought to the beach site by sea and towed to location by tug boats. This approach reduces local traffic and the works will be visible
from the coast.

Timescale
The timing of these works has been guided by the need to comply with the conditions of our planning consents which are sensitive to the
seasonal protection of local wildlife.
The planned duration to complete the programme of works is currently eight weeks (this is dependent on weather conditions due to the required
marine activities involved). During this time, there will be personnel and excavators working on the beach. The promenade will be open throughout
the duration of works with restricted access to minimal areas of the beach for a limited time only, purely for public safety purposes.
