AT&T Volunteers
This month, we would like to recognize the 4,512
AT&T employees who are being recognized by
President Obama for their outstanding service to
their communities, including our 102 winners in
Ohio.
These volunteers will receive the President’s
Volunteer Service Award (PVSA), a prestigious
honor awarded annually by the President of the
United States in recognition of sustained volunteer
service.
AT&T employees and retirees volunteered
5,611,322 total hours in 2014.
Imagine a day when volunteers didn’t show up.
Think of all the people and communities that would
be devastated — students would be left without
mentors; local parks would be filled with trash; and,
food and shelter would not be available to those in
need of a warm meal at the end of a long day.
AT&T Hiring for More than 120
Positions in Ohio
AT&T today announced that the company is
seeking applicants to fill more than 120 jobs around
Ohio, including technician positions in the Toledo
area and more than 70 call center positions in
Brecksville, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and
Youngstown. An open house/hiring event will be
held on Saturday, Mar. 7 for applicants interested in
the Brecksville call center positions. That event will
take place at the AT&T Cleveland Call Center, 45
Erieview Plaza, Cleveland, 44114, from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m.
This comes as the company totals its 2013 and 2014
hires in Ohio at more than 1,730. Positions filled in
the past two years included IT/engineering, retail,
technician, call center, business solutions, and
corporate support categories.
The hiring reflects AT&T’s continuing investment
in its Ohio network and team. The company made
more than 830 upgrades to its wireless network in
Ohio in 2014, including the launch of service for
former Alltel subscribers in more than 20 northern
Ohio counties. The integration of former Alltel
towers into the upgraded network increased
AT&T’s cell towers in these areas of Ohio by
nearly 40 percent. AT&T invested more than $1.6
billion in its wireless and wired networks in Ohio
between 2011 through 2013.

Our April guest speaker was Steve Wilkens who is the Senior Health and Trauma
Administrator of Akron General Medical Center in Cuyahoga Falls. He advised us that 12% of
hospital admittances are FALLS of ages 65 and over. FALLS are also the leading cause of
death in all age groups. He gave us many tips to avoid falls, especially in our homes. Steve
passed out a printed “Safe Home Checklist” that showed each room of our homes and how to
make them safer from falls. Should we fall, we were given instructions on what to do. Also
advises having a Life Alert of some kind. He talked about BEHAVIORAL changes as we
mature and accepting our limitations. AGMC wellness centers offer FREE Tai Chi classes to
improve our balance and muscle strength. Steve also covered Stroke and the importance of
getting to an ER right away so the TPA drug can be administered within 4 hours to break apart
any clots for better recovery. TIME IS TISSUE – TIME IS BRAIN. We also were given free
night lights to use in hallways at night.

FATHERS DAY – 1910 – First celebration in Spokane, Wash by Sonora Smart Dodd on
June 19. She wanted to honor her father, civil war vet William Jackson Smart for having been a
single parent and raising 6 children alone after her mother’s death. From 1916 many attempts
were made for an official holiday but did not have congressional support. 1966 – Pres Johnson
signed the proclamation for the 3rd Sunday in June. 1972 – Pres Nixon made it a permanent
holiday. – There are more than 70 million fathers in the U.S.

At our April meeting we had 11 people. Sure would like to see more now that the week has
been changed to the second week of the month.
Kevin Lynch was also there and gave us an update on ATT.
We collected $16 for our change jar. The total for the last 3 months was $52. A motion was
made and past at the meeting to send $100 to St. Herman’s. Our next project for the next 3
month will be Maggie’s Place. It is a home for unwed mothers. They can care for up to 9
women at a time. In our change jar we will be collecting for this project. Also at the April
meeting a motion was made and passed to spend up to $500 to buy a baby stroller that includes
an infant seat and car seat. Not to exceed $500.
We will also be collecting items need for Maggie’s Place. They have enough baby clothes.
What they need are things for the house. Baby diapers size new born and size 5, wipes (not
baby wipes) Lysol and Clorox, sugar (yes they use a lot – they do have cravings). And don’t
forget our change jar for donations.
Hug-A-Bears – We can use some more volunteers on this project. You do not have to
come every month but once in a while will be a great help. Next get together will be at
Brecksville Library on July 20th from 1 to 4. Carol Martin will be in charge, any questions call
her on 440-526-2890. We received a Thank You from Pleasantview Care Center for the
pillows.

Father's Day (June 21) passing time can never dim the father's love or your love for him. Remember the
precious times you had with him. His smile, the touch of his hand. They will always be clear to your heart. If
you are lucky to have father, grandfather here with you. Shower them with love and be thoughtful.
Last month May was Memorial Day, Commemorating all the men and women who have died in
military service for the US. Let us never forget the people defending our country.
We have been looking into some other places. Joe and Fran will keep you updated.
Thanks to Donna for handling the April meeting due to so many of us being ill.
News from the Ohio Bell Chorus we lost another person George Seidel. Our sympathy to his family.
Also Jerry Noble's wife also passed away. Our sympathy to all.
Lil Ruggerri will be out for a while as she had a hip replacement at Tri Point Hospital.
Lois Fabian also had minor surgery and Dorothy Dudash will get shots in her spine. We will all we wish
all of them a speedy recovery.
Well it's time again to start working in the yard. The trees are turning green and the flowers are coming
up. Good luck with your yardwork.

The Shoes & Clothes for Kids folding day was a success again, and many thanks to Gary Dunbar, Chris
Gyuire, Diane Bowditch, Guy Biasiotta, Mary Sebastian, Steve Pevec, Arvine Paschall, Lorna Acklin, Mary
Jane Lichtler, Mary Cleary and myself.
By the time you all receive this newsletter, our Casino trip has gone over real big, and hopefully everyone
will have a good time and be big winners. We sold enough seats to open another bus to everyone.
As you know, we are no longer collecting pill bottles, but we are still collecting, good used clothing,
magazines, paperback books, eyeglasses and plastic bags to deliver to various organizations.
Gary Dunbar and I took a tour of the Cornerstone of Hope facility on April 30th. If you were at the April
luncheon we had a speaker from the facility talk to us about what they do there. It is a grief counseling center
and it sounded interesting. We are planning to do a dinner on May 14th, 2015, but they want a simple dinner,
and we will discuss it more later. This is probably going to be a new place for us to do some very deserving
volunteering. We will keep everyone posted.
I hope to see all of you at our luncheons and remember to bring a friend or two, neighbors and family, we
would love to see all of you.

Youngstown Telecom Pioneers met on April 8, 2015 at the Maronite Center in Cornersburg. Our president,
Joanne Gramelt, gave the welcome to members and guests.
The invocation was presented by Dave Post and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Karl Haught.
Marianne Poprik introduced her personal friend, Aundrea Cika Heschmeyer, as the special guest speaker.
Heschmeyer is the director of the AUTISM SOCIETY OF OHIO (MAHONING VALLEY CHAPTER).
Joanne Gramelt read the minutes as secretary, Jan Sternagel, had to leave early due to a family matter. The
minutes were approved as read.
Rich Gramelt gave the treasurer’s report and it was approved. Gramelt and Joanie Post, our Member-at—Large
spoke briefly re: the restructuring of the Pioneers. We are waiting until December to hear the outcome of the reorganization from Cleveland.
Dorothy Buckley, (Hug-A-Bears), moved to Kentucky to be close to family.
DEATHS: Gene Cecil and Jim Sabol - We extend our sympathy to the families of these men. (I have no more
information, at this time, but will try to find their obituaries online, and will re-post more information later)
BIRTHDAYS: Karl Haught, May 1st. He will celebrate 80 years.
ANNIVERSARIES: Linda & Jack Schwarten, April 7th, 53 years; Joanne & Marty Greggo, April 20th, 30 years;

Update on Ohio IP Transition Legislation
One of the most crucial issues facing our company is the work we are doing to prepare our network
for the transition to all Internet Protocol or IP networks. In February, Gov. John Kasich included
language in his proposed budget, House Bill 64, for the State of Ohio that will allow AT&T to plan for
the IP Transition and continue to invest in Ohio.
The telecom provisions in House Bill 64:
Updates Ohio law to reflect the fact that our home telephone lines do much more today
than they ever have. For generations, landlines to our homes only carried our voices. Today,
they carry voice, e-mails, data, photos, TV shows and movies. Our laws need to reflect that.
Streamlines Ohio’s process for allowing telephone providers to transition Ohio’s phone
network from one that was developed to carry only voice to one that is powered by the Internet
and delivers better, faster and more reliable services to customers.
Involves the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) in the planning, along with the
FCC, on behalf of Ohioans as the FCC manages a nationwide transition from our old phone
networks to our new and expanding wired and wireless networks of the future.
Immediately creates a collaborative process, managed by the PUCO, to gather all
interested stakeholders in planning for the transition and in identifying customers who might
have no reasonable options to their basic telephone service.
Includes a fail-safe process, managed by the PUCO. Once the transition is in its final
stages, it will require continuation of service by the phone company if a customer has no
reasonable options.
Ensures that no Ohio consumer will be without reasonable, affordable and accessible
phone service when the transition to all IP networks occurs.
As the debate and process moves through the Ohio Legislature we will keep you posted on critical
steps like committee and floor votes and ask for your help to contact Legislators and the Governor to
voice your support and ultimately, thank them for their leadership on this crucial issue for consumers
and business in Ohio.

payment? The caller has my information, so this must be legit…”
