ZED 3.0 Installation and Use Instructions - Driver-ZED
Driver-ZED 3.0 Installation and Use Guide Note: The terms “User” and “Student” are used interchangeably. Requirements Minimum system specs * Intel Pentium III 400mhz processor * Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system * 128 MB RAM * 120 MB free hard disk space * 1024 x 768 monitor resolution at 24 bit * 1x DVD-ROM Drive Recommended systems specs * Intel Pentium III 1ghz processor * Windows XP Home or Professional operating system * 256 MB RAM * 120 MB hard disk space * 1280 x 1024 monitor resolution * 4x DVD-ROM Drive Overview & Features The Driver-ZED 3.0 DVD consists of two main areas: • • The main Driver-ZED program, which requires a computer with a DVD drive The Perceptual Driving Module (PDM) for in-classroom, instructor use. The PDM can run on either a computer or a set top DVD player hooked up to a TV. Installation and discussion of the PDM is addressed at the end of this guide. The main Driver-ZED 3.0 program consists of approximately 100 individual video, live-action scenarios organized among four different driving modules: Country, Highway, Town, and Work Zones Within each of the four driving modules are up to four different scene types: Scan, Spot, Act, and Drive Each scenario type requires slightly different action on behalf of the student. In most cases, the user will be presented with a video scene and will then be prompted with questions about what was just viewed. In addition to the video scenes, there are approximately 25 flash-animated tips discussing important aspects of safe driving. There are also traffic safety facts and a “news” ticker, both of which may be updated automatically during login if the student’s computer has an internet connection. Finally, guides for students, parents, and instructors, as well as a brief help menu and a scoring module are included. Satisfactory completion of the program results in a printable certificate of accomplishment. Installation Place the Driver-ZED DVD in the DVD drive of your computer. Shortly after you close the drive a menu of choices should automatically appear. Should this screen fail to appear automatically, you may use Windows Explorer to navigate to your DVD drive, and double-click on “autorun.exe”. To install ZED, click on “Install the Course”. Simply follow the on-screen prompts. In most cases, the default choices with which you are presented should work fine. After the installation is complete, you will be prompted to run the program automatically. Running ZED for the First Time Shortly after running the program you will see a login screen. Simply enter a login name and password, and then click “new user”. The program will prompt you for your first and last name. After entering this info, click “yes”. There will be a delay while the program loads course and student tracking data. Please be patient, as this phase may take one minute or slightly longer. After the tracking data has been loaded, you will see an animated introduction to the program. There are two distinct pauses during the playback of the introduction that are known issues and will be fixed in the final version. After the introduction, ZED’s main menu will appear. ZED’s Main Menu The main menu consists of four main selection areas: • • • • About the AAA Foundation (self explanatory) Get on the Road (main program area) Driving Tips (flash animation safe driving tips for teens) Student and Parent Guide (not available in this beta version) Also on the main menu: A dynamic news ticker: At the top of the page which can be automatically updated if the user has an internet connection. Each news headline links out to web pages of interest. Help button: briefly explains the program’s interface and operation Score button: shows the student’s total score and score by module (highway, town, country, work zone) Exit button: exits the program after first rolling the program credits Additionally there are hidden “easter eggs” with fun sounds and other events which may pop up depending upon user action. Main Progam Area: “Get on the Road” Clicking “Get on the Road” brings the user to the second level menu with four tabs at the top of the page corresponding to the four driving modules. Click on a tab to display the course map for that module. Each scenario is denoted on the course module map by a road “sign” with a number on it. The highest numbered green sign is the next scenario scheduled to run. The student simply clicks it to go to the scenario interface to run the scenario. The student may return to the map at any time by clicking “map” at the bottom of the scenario screen and click any previously completed scenario appearing on the map. Previously run scenarios will not affect the student’s score. Note: The first time the program is run, only sign #1 on each map is available to click. Also, prior to viewing the first scenario, the student will be introduced to the “Zedmobile” as well as an animated driving checklist. After the checklist finishes running, click “close” to proceed to the first scenario. Driving scenarios are divided into four scenario types: Scan, Spot, Act, and Drive. The Highway, Town, and Country modules have all four of these groups. The Work Zone module only offers Spot and Scan scenario types. Voiceover prompts will explain the actions required of the student for each of the four scenario types. After the voiceover finishes, click on the screen as instructed to run the scenario. After running a scenario, the student can continue directly to the next scenario, replay the current scenario, or return to the map menu to choose a different module and/or scenario. Scoring The score tracking is not finalized. The final version will assign a score of one point for each scenario answered incorrectly, and zero points for each correctly completed scenario. The best possible score will be ZERO (“Zero Errors Driving” or “ZED”). Tips At any time the student may proceed to the Tips menu from the bottom navigation bar. Simply select any one of the driving tip titles from the index on the left side of the screen. The tip viewing area is on the right. Click “close” to close the tips menu. Tips do not need to be viewed in order. Returning to ZED After the Running It the First Time Launching ZED after the student has already run it once is very similar to running it the first time. There are minor menu choice changes that occur, and there’s no need to create a new login. Instead of clicking “Install the Course” on the autorun menu, click on “Launch the Course”. Login with the previously created login and password. The student may also start ZED by clicking on the desktop icon after inserting the DVD into the DVD-ROM drive. Perceptual Driving Module (PDM) The Perceptual Driving Module developed by the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (ADTSEA) is a special static system driving instruction unit designed to teach novice drivers what, when, where, why and how to scan the driving environment. This module is specifically designed for use in the classroom by driving instructors. It consists of a slide show broken into seven different sessions. Instructor notes accompanying the slide show will be included in the final version of ZED. The PDM may be run from both a computer DVD drive or a stand-alone DVD player hooked up to a television or projector. The PDM cannot be accessed within the main ZED program. Instead, launch the PDM by clicking the “Play Perceptual Driving Module” button on the automatically appearing menu pictured below: Note that there is no installation of the PDM; it is run directly from the DVD. If running the PDM on a computer, the user may need to upgrade older versions of Windows Media Player to version 10 (the user will be automatically prompted to do so, if necessary). The PDM’s main selection menu lists the seven sessions as well as associated session questions. Click on the session of interest to begin the session. Once a session is completed, the PDM will automatically take you to the beginning of the next session without having to return to the PDM’s main selection menu. Networking Instructions for ZED 3.0 The following is a guide to set up ZED 3.0 in a Windows networking environment. Please be aware that, depending upon the server and your local network conditions (traffic), ZED should be able to run on a 10 to 15 workstation network over a standard 100 base-T configuration. Sharing a tracking database. To share a tracking database between multiple machines you must have a network share that is available to all client machines. Once this is done you can run the installer and select the option to share the tracking database. (See below). On the next screen enter the full path to the database. This can either be a mapped drive or a fully qualified path to the network share. For example if your network share can be found at \\myserver\zed3\ enter that into the box. If you have mapped the network share to a windows drive you can enter that path, for example; m:\zed3\. Using notepad or other text editor, edit the settings.txt file, located in the client machine’s folder to which you installed ZED 3.0, to reflect your customized path settings. Replace the last line of the file with the correctly mapped drive path. In the prior example, you would enter m:\zed3\ in place of the default path found in the last line of settings.txt. When installing on the client you must run the same installation option (Minimum local installation with shared database). It should be noted that if the database file exists on the server then it will not be overwritten by the installer. If you wish to install a fresh copy you must manually delete the MojoTracking.mdb file. Installing/Running ZED 3.0 on a Server. If you wish to run the ZED 3.0 application from the server, including all media files, you will need to install ZED 3.0 directly to the server and select the Network Installation option when running the installer (see below). On the screen where you enter the location in which you want the installation to occur, you must select a location that is available to all client machines. The location chosen here corresponds to the location of the zed3 executable file and supporting files. Most installations will result in the default program path as <drive letter>:\program files\zed3. Please keep in mind that the default program path and database path are different. The default database, MojoTracking.mdb, is located in <drive letter>:\documents and settings\all users\application data\zed3. (Note: a dummy copy of MojoTracking.mdb is installed to the program directory, but it is not used unless the server administrator customizes the data path so that it gets used). All of the client machines must be able to connect to the same shared drive(s), either through a fully qualified path such as \\myserver\zed3 or a windows mapped drive such as m:\zed3. Using Notepad or other text editor, edit the settings.txt file found in the ZED3 program directory that was created during the above server installation procedure. The first and last lines in this file are file paths. The top line is the path to the program executable (zed3.exe) file; the last line is the path to the MojoTracking.mdb database. Edit these two paths so that they reflect the locations of both zed3.exe and MojoTracking.mdb, respectively, for your installation. If you are using drive letter mappings, this will result in two different drive letter maps being used. Ensure that the MojoTracking.mdb file has the proper security permissions or is in a location such that each client machine can read and write to this file. It is recommended that the clients retain “full control” over this file. Failure to edit the settings.txt file or set proper permissions for the database file will result in the inability of the client machines to continue beyond the login screen. The installer does not create shortcuts on the client machine. This must be done manually. To create a shortcut on the client machine right click on the desktop and select New-> ShortCut. When the wizard pops up either browse to or type in the path to the server and create the short cut so that it points to the zed3.exe file. You may need to contact your network administrator to complete this task. Please note: The tracking data loading phase which starts immediately after logging in can take up to 5 minutes depending upon network configuration and conditions. Please be patient. Uninstalling Driver-ZED Click the Start button, then Settings and Control Panel. Inside the Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs. Look for the ZED 3 entry. Click it to highlight that entry, then click “change/remove”. Follow the prompts to complete the removal of the program from your computer.
