Young Artist Competition 2015 Regulations
The Austin Flute Society is pleased to announce the twenty-seventh annual Young Artist Competition, which
seeks to recognize outstanding young flute and piccolo players.

ELIGIBILITY & AWARDS
Junior Flute Division (grades 8-9) - $150 (1st), $100 (2nd), $50 (3rd)
Senior Flute Division (grades 10-12) - $300 (1st), $200 (2nd), $100 (3rd)
Piccolo Division (grades 10-12) - $300 (1st), $200 (2nd)*

*2nd place piccolo prize is contingent on the number of applicants. The contestant's flute teacher must be a
current member of the Austin Flute Society. YAC applications will be processed only after the teacher's dues
are current. The contestant may not be a former first place winner in the same division. The winners will be
presented in a joint recital on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Concordia University. Prizes will be awarded at that
time. Anyone who wins a prize and is unable to perform at the winners' recital will forfeit both the prize and
title, at the discretion of the AFS Board of Directors.
REPERTOIRE
Memorization of chosen solo is mandatory only for Senior Flute Division entrants, but encouraged in all
divisions. Required pieces are performed unaccompanied. No memorization required.
• Junior Flute Division - Contestants will perform a solo of their choice as well as the required piece
G.F. Handel, Sonata II in gm, Movement I, Adagio.
• Senior Flute Division - Contestants will perform a solo of their choice as well as the required piece, Paul
Hindemith, Sonata for Flute and Piano, Movement 2, measures 1-23.
• Piccolo Division - Contestants will perform a solo of their choice as well as the required piece, Lowell

Liebermann, Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra, Movement 1, measures 106-end.
COMPETITION
The competition and winners recital will be held at Concordia University, 11400 Concordia University Drive,
Austin, Texas 78726. The competition will be held on Saturday, April 18th, 2015. You will be notified in advance
of your playing time with details of where to report; past competitions generally run from 10AM-3PM, please
be sure your pianist is available during that time frame. The winners' recital will be held the next day, April
19 th, 2015.

• Competition auditions will consist of two rounds. The first round will use the prepared repertoire. The second
round will use the required material. Except for the required piece, works should be cut to comply with the
!
audition time limit (10 minutes). If the contestant goes over the time limit, he or she will be stopped.

• Three (3) copies of the selected repertoire must be provided for the judges. Do not write your name
on the copies. Copies will not be returned. Measures must be numbered on all copies. You do not
!
need to provide copies of the required selection.
• The entrant must provide his or her own pianist for the audition and competition winners must provide
their own pianists for the winners' recital. All accompanied pieces MUST be performed with piano.
!
Pianists need to be available between 10AM-3PM the day of the competition.
• In the event of a tie, contestants must be present and prepared to play the required piece and/or
selections from the solo, at the discretion of the judges. All re-plays will be unaccompanied.
• Do not say your name or talk to the judges. While the judges will be facing you, they will know you only

by your assigned performance number, which will be on a badge you wear during the audition.
STANDARDS
• All contestants will be judged on their overall performance, which includes musicality, tone, technical
proficiency, and stage presence. The decision of the judges is final. The judges reserve the right to
!
withhold any or all of the prizes.
FEES
• There is a non-refundable application fee of $35 per entry, plus $20 membership fee, if entrant is not a
current AFS member. (If applying for both the Senior Flute Division and the Piccolo Division, this
counts as two entries.) Payment can be made online at www.austinflutesociety.org Your flute instructor's

membership dues and membership form must also be submitted at this time, if not already paid.
DEADLINES
• Complete applications and fees must be submitted electronically by March 1, 2015.

• Email completed application and biography to [email protected]. Applications are not
!
considered complete until the biography is received.
• Late fees: A $15 late fee must accompany any application not submitted by the deadline. Late
applications will be processed in the order in which they are received, based on remaining availability.

Application fees will be refunded if there are no available times remaining.
