ONE Automation platform manages all internal processes.
REGION: Europe INDUSTRY: Banking SOLUTION: Workload Automation ONE Automation platform manages all internal processes. • Staff freed up to focus on higher value business critical tasks • Applications now communicate seamlessly to achieve total business integration • Increased reliability and performance for cross- platform data processing Société Générale Bank & Trust (SGBT), a subsidiary of the Société Générale Group, is one of the top banks in Luxembourg, and is ranked eighth among the world’s most important financial centers. The Challenge Efficient technology is key to a bank’s global competitive strategy. SGBT, one of the largest banks in Luxembourg, found itself continually adapting its IT systems to meet the constantly changing demands on the bank’s internal business processes. The bank’s mainframe, a Siemens BS2000, was the core of its business operations. Over the years, the mainframe had been upgraded with new software products and open systems connectivity – making it increasingly difficult to manually control and monitor SGBT’s internal production processes. By mid-2002, SGBT began looking for a platform- independent scheduler that could automatically manage and centrally control the bank’s many internal systems. The new solution had to integrate the mainframe, some 20 Unix midrange systems, and more than 40 Windows (Intel) servers into a single, consistent IT infrastructure. Concerned about the bank’s dependence on a few specialists to manage hundreds of jobs, SGBT wanted the new solution to automate internal business processes (both time and event dependent), and minimize manual interventions. The solution also needed to be easy to use, with simple reporting and process documentation capabilities. Finally, to support SGBT’s existing IT environment, the solution had to seamlessly integrate externally purchased commercial applications, many of which had poorly documented APIs. With ONE Automation, applications now communicate seamlessly to achieve total business integration. The Solution After a request for proposals (RFP) from leading workload automation vendors and a series of proofof-concept trials, SGBT selected the ONE Automation platform from Automic. The company’s reputation as the leading provider of business automation, as well as Automic’s flexibility and open design, proved to be the winning factors. SGBT also praised ONE Automation’s unique feature combination of its user interface and powerful script language – providing “After evaluating the top workload automation solutions on the market, we decided on Automic. What convinced us most was the solution’s unmatched flexibility and openness, as well as its powerful technical and functional capabilities.” Luc Dosquet, SGBT ease of use when managing complex workflows while delivering the flexibility needed to automate the most complex tasks. Once the underlying conceptual work was complete, SGBT transferred all open systems to the ONE Automation platform. The mainframe soon followed suit. By early 2003, ONE Automation was handling the bank’s internal processes, from basic file transfers between different systems to centralized system backups. Soon ONE Automation’s scope was further extended to include the control of all external applications as well. The Results With ONE Automation, SGBT was able to automate all of the regularly recurring bank tasks to some 1,500 jobs, with approximately 1,000 jobs running on a daily basis. A key advantage for SGBT was the fact that ONE Automation checks the availability of necessary files before executing a task – avoiding poorly timed or ineffective job starts, and ensuring that all systems and dependencies involved are perfectly synchronized. ONE Automation’s extensive documentation and reporting features are also an instrumental part of the platform’s success. Each job run is fully documented in ONE Automation. Additionally, ONE Automation accelerates all processes, and operational efficiency has been dramatically improved. A job run no longer depends on rigid, pre-defined timetables, but responds in real time to events as they occur, saving considerable time while fully maximizing both human and technical resources. As a result, SGBT has been able to free up operations staff, who can now focus on ensuring top quality service and reliability. Job scheduling with ONE Automation has been extremely beneficial to SGBT, supporting the seamless management of all business-critical data processing and enabling true event based automation, enterprise-wide. All applications communicate seamlessly via ONE Automation to achieve total business integration. SGBT has been able to free up operations staff, who can now focus on ensuring top quality service and reliability. Automic is the world’s most comprehensive platform for automating businesses.
