Community Supported Agriculture (CSA): In basic terms, CSA consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm opera on. Members, or shareholders, of the farm or garden pledge in advance to cover the an cipated costs of the farm opera on and farmer’s salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm’s bounty throughout the growing season. Members also share in risks, including poor harvest due to unfavorable weather or pests. You will find the following terms noted with a * throughout this booklet. Cer fica ons PA Preferred: State‐supported agricultural marke ng program to iden fy and promote food and agricultural products grown, produced or processed in PA. USDA Cer fied Organic: A federal cer fica on based on the Na onal Organic Program, in which produc on methods aim to preserve the environment and avoid most synthe c materials, such as pes cides and an bio cs. Cer fied Naturally Grown (CNG): Based on the Na onal Organic Program standards, CNG farmers don’t use any synthe c herbicides, pes cides, fer lizers, an bio cs, hormones, or gene cally modified organisms; livestock are raised mostly on pasture and with space for freedom of movement; feed must be grown without synthe c inputs or gene cally modified seeds. Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Typically a preventa ve process that uses several non
‐ chemical tac cs to deal with pests. Pes cides are used only as a last resort. Good Agricultural Prac ces Cer fied (GAPs): A business (especially a wholesale business) carries out the best agricultural prac ces to verify that fruits and vegetables are produced, packed, handled, and stored in the safest manner possible to minimize risks of microbial food safety hazards. Food assistance programs Women, Infants & Children (WIC): A federal program offering supplemental food assistance, health care referrals, and nutri on educa on for low‐income pregnant, breas eeding, and non‐breas eeding postpartum women, and infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutri onal risk. Farmers Market Nutri on Program (FMNP): A federal program that aims to increase access to fresh, unprepared, and locally grown fruits and vegetables to WIC par cipants, and to expand the awareness, use of, and sales at farmers’ markets. Senior Farmers Market Nutri on Program (SFMNP): A federal program that aims to provide low‐income seniors with coupons that can be exchanged for eligible foods (fruits, vegetables, honey, and fresh‐cut herbs) at farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and community‐supported agriculture programs. Supplemental Nutri on Assistance Program (SNAP): Formerly Food Stamps, a federal program that offers nutri on assistance to millions of eligible, low‐income individuals and families and that provides economic benefits to communi es. 10 Local Goods

Ruth’s Harvest Ge ysburg sends backpacks filled with meals for the weekend home with students who qualify for free and reduced lunches in the Ge ysburg Area School District.
