Using Coloured Pencils
By Megan Kapma
Many of us had coloured
pencils as children and loved
colouring in books. Now we
are scrapbooking and card
making, coloured pencils
can be used here too. The
advantage with coloured
pencils is that if you make a
mistake you can often erase
it with a plastic based eraser.
Did you know there are
different ways of colouring
with coloured pencils. Take a
look ...
Hatching is when you colour
using a series of individual
lines all going in the same
direction. The lines can either
be close together or further
apart.
Cross-hatching is when
you draw using the parallel
lines going in one direction,
then add another series
of parallel lines going in a
different direction on top of
the original lines. This can be
a great way to add shading
and texture to an area.
Back and forth strokes is
probably the most common
form of colouring. So you
colour back and forth without
lifting the pencil from the
paper until you are finished
colouring the area.
Lastly is scumbling which is
another technique you are
probably familiar with but did
not know what it was called.
This is when you colour in a
small circular motion without
lifting the pencil off the paper
while colouring.
With pencils to get a nice
even colouring you are best
to colour either using the
back & forth stroke or the
scumbling method. There are
also other liquid solutions you
can apply to your coloured
areas to help blend your
pencils and smooth out the
strokes if needed.
Here is a layout where I have
used some coloured pencils.
First I traced my title using
one of my favourite alpha
templates. I used my black
Welcome
to this months Better
Scrapbooking newsletter.
April has been one of these
months when I have so
much going on at home
with birthdays and fitness
events. But I just love being
able to get back and be
creative with so many
different things. This month
I decided one of the things
I wanted to play with was
coloured pencils. Most
of us would have used
coloured pencils as kids
in colouring books, well
now is a great time to find
more coloured pencils and
add them to your projects.
See some different ways
of colouring and different
ideas of using them on your
projects.
Also this month I have a
number of fun layouts
created using the latest
ScrapPack.
Be sure to check out the
shopping page to see

Well, until next time ...
Be creative.

EK Success writer pen to do
the outline. The pencils I
used for this layout were my
daughters Crayola coloured
pencils (because they had a
nice red) I coloured so that
I was pressing quite hard at
the top and bottom of each
letter with the red and blue
then released the pressure
as I coloured to give a lighter
colour as I worked to the
middle of each letter. When I
was happy with the cross over
of colours I used a paper stub
and some Gamsol blending
solution to give an added
blend between colours.
Of course another way you
can use coloured pencils on
your projects is to stamp an
image, colour it and add it
to your project. Here I have
coloured a stamp using the
Spectrum Noir coloured
pencils. These are specifically
designed to be used with
stamps and can be blended
using the blending pencil
or the Gamsol blending
solutions. These have stunning
colours. With this card I have
just used the pencils and not
really done any blending
other
than the
dress
where I
used the
blending
pencil.
Lastly
here is
a layout
where
I have
used a coloured stamped
image as an embellishment.
Again I coloured using the
Spectrum Noir Pencils but
this time used the Gamsol to
smooth out the pencil strokes.
So why not grab some
coloured pencils for yourself
and add them to your next
scrapbooking or card making
project.

idea you can try. Take a
small acrylic block and
wrap it with bakers
twine. Ink up the twine
and stamp, turn the
block 90 degrees and
stamp again. Be sure
to ink between each
stamping. Do this over
a card front or area
on the background
of a layout for a cool
effect.

During the month my
family and I went away
to Rotorua. On the drive
home we witnessed an
amazing sunset. This sunset
inspired the above tags. I
used to vibrant colours of
Distress Ink - Blue China
and Spiced Marmalade.
Then I stamped using
a black ink. During the
sunset the night sky went
slightly darker shades of
these colours and the trees
were silhouetted like these
twigs. I encourage you as
you drive home to watch
the sunset and night sky.
You just might find your
next card, tag or layout
inspiration.
Here is a fun home made
background stamping
Here is another great idea
you can use with feathers.
Be sure if it is one you have
collected on a walk some
where that it is clean.
Add ink to the feather by
placing the feather onto
a large ink pad, place a
scrap piece of paper on
top then using a brayer roll
across the paper. Remove
the paper and feather.
Pick up the feather using
tweezers (by the feather
shaft). Place the feather
on your project, adding
another piece of scrap
paper on the top and
roll over with your brayer
to transfer the ink to your
project.

ground and cut out a 9” square from the
middle.
Adhere the 9 1/2” Bazzill White square cardstock over the hole you just created.
Crop your photos to both measure 5 1/2”x 3 3/4”, then mat them together on the 5 3/4”x
7 3/4” Bazzill Desert Sun cardstock.
Place your matted photo and one of the 8”x 1” strip of Owls Always Love You pattern
paper using the reverse side onto the white cardstock so that the strip tucks behind the
top of the matted photos. Have your matted photos so they are about 1” away from the
right edge of the white cardstock. Adhere the 8”x 1” strip in place.
Now place the ‘Moments’ die-cut over the bottom right corner of the matted photos
and white cardstock and work out how long you need the strips strip and the other Owl
Always Love You strip (reverse side), trim them down so that the white shows through
the ‘Moments’ on the die-cut and adhere them under the bottom edge of the matted
photos as shown.
Adhere the matted photos in place and the ‘Moments’ die-cut in place as well. Add the
‘family’ sticker just above ‘Moments’ in the die-cut.
Adhere the ‘It doesn’t matter’ sticker by the top left corner of the matted photos. Then
trim the arrow sticker border into individual arrows and space five of them evenly on the
white cardstock down the left side of the matted photos. Add a single pink bling by the
points of each arrow.
