FROM JAMIE DUNN, PRESIDENT: District 7570 Rotarians: The "We are this Close" event is May 19, 2015 at the
Salem Civic Center in Salem, VA at 6:00 P.M. Rotary International President 2016-17 John Germ will be the keynote speaker. To register go to www.rotary7570.org/calendar. The cost of the dinner is $35. Rotarians in District
7570 have played a huge part in a districtwide campaign to raise $250,000 for End Polio Now with your Race at
the Homestead last month which raised $47,000 for End Polio Now. This is an opportunity to continue helping to
eradicate polio from the world and to enjoy some Rotary fellowship. The hosts and organizers for the event are
the Salem Club, Salem Club President Dr. Bertram Spetzler, PDG Joe Ferguson, DRFC Janet Johnson, AG Beth
Pline and Jim McAden. Mark the date on your calendar to attend!
FORE PLEASE! FROM THE GOLF TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE: The 15th Annual Rotary Club of Blacksburg
Captain’s Choice Golf Tournament is Monday, June 15th beginning at 1:00. The entry fee is $400 per team/$100
per individual which includes green and cart fee, lunch before the tournament, one mulligan and one raffle
ticket. At the conclusion of play, there will be awards for winning teams and a raffle drawing for a variety of
prizes including restaurant and store gift certificates, golf passes and signed memorabilia. What we need now is
for Rotarians, friends, co-workers, family, etc. to register individually or as a team for the tournament.
Registration forms were emailed out and hard copies will be on the table at our weekly meeting. You can mail in
your form and entry fee to our PO Box (address is on the form) or you can give it to Aaron Summers or Jamie
Dunn at our weekly meeting. If you are not a golfer, there are other ways to get involved with volunteering the
day of the event such as helping with registration, monitoring hole in one holes, hosting, raffle prizes, etc. You
can also be a hole sponsor for only $100. It would be great to see everyone out at the golf course on June 15th!
FROM CHRIS BELLUZZO, YARD SALE COMMITTEE: Spring is here at last! That means Spring Cleaning, and a
great opportunity to pick out items for donation for our August Yard Sale! It’s never too early to start getting
things together, so if you find good items be sure to hold on to them. This year we will have some storage space
available ahead of time so if you have something that must go soon let the Yard Sale Committee know!
FROM GEORGE MILLER, FOUNDATION COMMITTEE: We are engaged in the annual spring fund drive for the
Local Foundation. The Local Foundation is how we the members of the Blacksburg Rotary Club pool our
resources to make a positive difference in our local community and the world at large. The Local Foundation has
financially supported a broad range of worthy projects, from college scholarships for Montgomery County
students to emergency shelter for disaster survivors. All told, the Local Foundation has contributed $23,100 in
the last year to support the goals and objectives of the club and its members.
The Club requests that you support the Local Foundation by becoming a “Contributor” with a $100 tax
deductible donation. Donations will be accepted at meetings by Jamie Dunn, Peter Weimerskirch or George

We Remember the Charter Members
Under the sponsorship of the Evening Club, a charter was granted to the new group by Rotary International on
January 25, 1979. Charter night was held on February 15, 1979 at the Continuing Education center on the
Virginia Tech campus. The club had 51 initial members and its official name was the Rotary Club of BlacksburgChristiansburg Noon. The first officers and board of directors were Bane Atkinson, President; Bob Sullins, Vice
President; Ken Martin, Secretary; Gordon Winbery, Treasurer; and Lew Shelor, Sergeant at Arms.
