Chapter - 1
Myself
Aim:
•To know about yourself
•To develop certain skills—communication and listening skills
Teaching Apparatus
Chart paper, placards of different colours and different animals,
crayons, pencils, a pair of scissors, children’s clothes
Method
Day 1
Since this is a topic about which a child has some knowledge, you can start the
class by asking children about what they know about themselves. Jot down all
the points on the blackboard. Allow the children to come out with different
points about themselves. Ask questions related to their age, their favourite
colours, hobbies, etc.
Ask a few children in the class to give description about themselves.. Ask them
to tell about their names, last name, age, and the name of their best friends.
This will make them understand that everybody in the class have a different
name and surname. All of them have different hobbies too.
Ask them questions about their family and family members. What do their
family members do?
The children of first grade like to talk about themselves. Help the children to
learn about their individualities, similarities and differences. This activity will
help in improving the sense of togetherness in the children. At later stage,
phonics can also be incorporated. Ask the children to divide themselves into
three or four groups. Now provide them a question paper which has space to
write the answers.
Sample questions
What makes you different from other people?
What are the similarities in between you and your friends?
What makes you so special?
Who are your family members?
This activity will help in the improvement of awareness of the child about
himself or herself.
Day 2
There are several other activities that can help in improving the self awareness
such as asking the child to trace his outline on a chart paper. Ask him to draw
face, nose, eyes, ears, hands and legs in it. The child can cut the outline. Assist
them if they need your health. The children have to make a similar outline. They
will now staple the two outlines together. Stuff them with tissue paper,
newspaper, what ever is available. Now, dress the dummy with the child’s
clothes. Although this activity will take a few days to complete but the child will
enjoy seeing a glimpse of themselves in their own clothes. This activity will
again help in improving the self awareness of the children.
Day 3
Bring a big chart paper in the class. Ask the children to sign on the chart paper
by writing the things that they like about themselves. Display the collage in the
classroom.
These are the activities that will help the children to know about the similarities
and differences among themselves.
I love to do gardening. Tell the children that all these question are related to
them. Also, ask them questions like what is the job of your father? What your
mother does? Which is your favourite dish? Ask the children to listen to the
question and give a response after each question. Encourage the children to
participate and teach the chapter from the book.

Let the students write a few lines about their family, school, and themselves.

Chapter - 2
My Body
Aim
• To identify the external body parts.
• To understand the functions of different body parts
Teaching materials
A large sheet of paper, pencil, eraser, a CD player, pictures of
different body parts, a large sheet of paper, a chart of growth pattern
Method
Day 1
Start the class by asking different questions in the class like
• Can you observe different parts of your body?
• What are the different parts of your body that you can see?
• Name all the body parts and jot them down in your notebook. You can write
down all the answers given by the children on the blackboard.
Let the children come out with different views and answers. Ensure that each
child participate in the question and answer round.
As a brief outline, the students of this grade are expected to learn their body
parts along with their functioning such as what are the functions of your head,
neck, arms, forearms, etc. As a teacher, you can demonstrate the students the
locations of different body parts on a poster of our body parts. Point the
different body parts and say their names aloud. Ask the students to repeat their
names together. Now, the teacher can name the body parts aloud and can ask
the children to move them. The teacher can take help of a poem to give the
children a visual feedback. This will help the children to retain the names of the
body parts.
Day 2
After learning and identifying the names of different body parts, provide a
worksheet to the children in which they have to match the name of the body
part to its image. This will also help them to memorize the spelling of each body
part.
The teacher can also play the games like "YOU SAY". In this, she can ask the
student to perform different tasks based on different body part, for example the
teacher can ask the children to tilt their neck to the right and then to the left. This
movement will create a link between the child's brain and body as their name
will be processed from thought into action.
Conduct another activity by dividing the children into two groups. The students
will be asked to make their own body outline. Pass a large sheet to every child.
One child will lie down on the paper while the other child will draw an outline of
this child. Now each child will label their body parts in this outline. Display the
outline of each child in the class and provide your corrective and positive
feedback to the child.
Day 3
You can also play the “Hockey Pockey" song or "The Bone Bounce" by Luck
Jensenas. These songs depict connection in between different body parts.
Now take a body outline and ask the children to help you to label the names of
different body parts. Ask them to identify a few body parts that are still missing
in the outline.
Along with, you can also give an idea to the children about how our body
changes with growth. Ask the children to bring a few photographs from their
childhood to their present age. Now ask them to compare their photographs
from then and now. This will make them understand how their body has
changed.
Besides these, display some charts that depict that how a boy or a girl grows
into an adult and an adult gets old. These activities will help them to understand
a few traits that are similar to themselves.
At the end of the discussion, ask them about the inference than we can draw
from the lesson. Spend a couple of periods in discussions before taking up the
chapter.

Chapter - 3
Sense Organs
Aim
• To teach them the identification of different body parts

Day 1
As a part of recapitulation, ask the children about the uniqueness of our body
parts. Tell them that it is one of its own kinds. It has five sense organs—
hearing, seeing, touching, tasting and smelling. The most special feature of our
body is that we are able to think and feel things..
Make pairs of children. Ask them to look at each other to understand the
differences in their eyes, nose, skin colour, height, etc. Tell them that each pair
has to elicit at least one difference. List them on the blackboard. After listing all
the differences tell the children that we all are different and come from different
families and different places. This activity will help the children to understand
that we all are different about the variations in between us and that we all are
different in one or other way.
Take the students to visit a garden. Ask them to demonstrate the actions of
different body parts with help of small games that demonstrate functions like
running, jumping, skipping, hopping, sliding, crawling, etc.
Day 2
Each student has to demonstrate a way in which they can move their body
parts. The students will in turn show you movements
Play a song in the classroom that the children can listen to and enjoy. Ask a few
questions to the children related to the song like which body part help us to hear
the song. The children will answer ear. Along with it, you can also teach the
children about the importance of keeping our ears and nose clean.
Like wise, you can explain the children the significance of different sense
organs like our nose. Provide them a few materials with different fragrances in
them such as rose, soap, perfumes, etc. Let the children smell them.. Wait for
a few minutes and ask the children about the smell of these things. The children
will tell about their likings and disliking for different smells.
Day 3
Visit a nearby park with the children for a picnic. The children will bring different
types of foods, fruits, breads, snacks, etc. Keep these food items separately in
bags such that the students can’t see through. The students will be then asked
to identify the food items by smelling, touching and tasting. This activity will
help them to use their different senses.
Ask the children to close their eyes. Wait for a minute. Now tell them to open
their eyes and explain any five things that they can see around them. This will
make them understand the significance of their vision.

Chapter - 4
Keeping clean

Day 1
Introduce the topic to the children by emphasizing on the need of inculcation of
personal care and hygiene. Students should understand the importance of
habits like washing hands before and after every meal and other aspects of
personal hygiene. Explain the children different ways by which they can keep
their body clean. Ask the questions like
• What will happen to us if we will start eating food from the road side vendors?
• What will happen to our teeth if they are not brushed regularly?
• How often should we wash our hands?
• How often should we take bath?
• Elicit answers from the class.
As a teacher, explain to the children the meaning of 3Ms-- care taking of myself
, i.e. myself, my clothes and my surroundings.
Display a power point presentation to the children that helps the children to
understand the meaning of cleanliness.

2.Why is it important to brush our teeth clothes?
3.Why is it important to wear clean clothes everyday?
4.Who help us in getting ready for the school?
5.How often should we wash our hands, brush my teeth a have a bath?
Discuss all these questions in detail. Devise and explain a personal care plan
to the students so that they can grasp the necessary aspects of personal care
in their day to day life. The power point presentation should show the correct
ways of how to wash hands, brush teeth, comb hair, etc.
The students will then practice the steps taught by the children.
Day 2
Emphasize on dental care as the children are prone to cavities. Divide the
students in a group of four or five and ask them to discuss about the need of
keeping their teeth clean. The children can discuss in their groups the
necessities of maintaining hygiene.
Now show the children 3 items like
clothes, school bags and electronic toy. Ask the children to divide themselves
into groups and discuss how they can take care of these items.
Clothes and bags: Looks cleaner, smells good, make us feel smart and stays
for a long time bags. Are needed everyday while going to school.
Electronic toy: It is expensive and contains necessary details. Students will
share their ideas with the whole class. Provide them a situation to the children
like you well playing in the garden and suddenly it rained heavily and you got
wet and muddy what well you do now?
• I well walk into the room with my shoes.
• I will take off my shoes and will go inside.
• I will take source and will change my clothes.
Recapitulation
The teacher will reinforce all the aspects of the lessons and will ask the
students to demonstrate activities like washing you hand, brushing your teeths,
etc. Students should be reminded to follow the personal care plan and should
from a programme for themselves that they need to follow everyday.

Chapter - 5
Clothes we wear

Teaching materials
A slide show on different kinds of clothes, a variety of worksheets.
Method
Day 1
Demonstrate a slide show to the children that displays different kinds of
clothes. Divide them in the groups of three or four. Ask them to discuss and
write the benefits of the clothes. Assess whether the students have any
difficulty about the slide show. Motivate the children to ask questions. If they
are asking no questions then make sure that they have understood the
move/slideshow.
Ask students to search pictures of different types of clothes worn in different
seasons. They can collect pictures from the internet or magazines. The
students can search pictures of clothes worn in different seasons. They can
even search the dresses worn by the people of the other countries. After they
have collected sufficient pictures, ask them to make a collage by pasting the
picture and writing a few lines of information about it. The teacher should walk
around the students to see whether they have understood the activity and
whether they are working on it. Assess the children on the basis of amount of
information gathered long them. Appoint an extra point to the group who have
brought information from five different sources.
Day 2
Distribute a worksheet to every child in which they have to match clothing
names with their pictures.
Explain the worksheet to the students and ask them a few questions to find out
whether the students have understood the instructions. You can assign a
matching exercise to the children where they can match the clothing items to
their names. Encourage the children to play a nice game by naming clothes
belonging to different states.
Give them a situation like their parents are taking them to Rajasthan and they
have to pack clothes for their trip. Select any one child who can act as a
shopkeeper and teacher will distribute paper money. The children salesperson
has paper cut clothes and the every child will go one by one and will say I want
this cloth. If the child is unable to say the name of the dress, the teacher will
encourage her to speak out. Salesperson will then tell the price of the item and
child will pay the price.
The game will run like us this manner. This activity will help the children to learn
more names of clothes.
Ask the class to find out the source of woollen and cotton clothes. Try to know
how those materials are used to make clothes.

Chapter - 6
Our food
AIM
To make the child understand

Method
Day 1
Students should be able to tell about the foods that we eat daily. They should
understand the concept of healthy food. Students should understand the
difference between healthy food and unhealthy food. They should understand
the necessity of breakfast, lunch and dinner.
At this point of time, give the children a basic idea of healthy diet that includes
serving from different food groups. Tell them the importance of healthy
schedule and good food habits.
You can begin the chapter by showing two pictures to the students. In one
picture, there is a sick child who is sitting on a chair and is writing something
with a very weak expression. In the other photo, there is a healthy and happy
child, who is hale and hearty, and playing in the park. Ask the students about
the difference in between the two pictures. Correlate these pictures to their
food habits and tell the children about the adverse effects of eating unhealthy
food.
Day 2
Ask the children to bring crayons, clay and play dough. Encourage the students
to make a display of their favourite food. Display the same in the class later.
When children are doing this activity, you can suggest the children to make
healthy food items like rice, eggs, dals, fruits, vegetables, etc.
Tell the students about a brief of what they should take in the breakfast, lunch,
dinner and at what time they should take their respective meals.
You can also provide a week chart to the students suggesting about the food
items that they can have in breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 3
Provide a theme to the children to prepare their food plate. They can find
pictures from magazines and newspapers. Tell the students that they can plan
either the three, i.e. breakfast, lunch or dinner. Instruct them to take care that
the meal should contain all the healthy food items in it.
Recapitulation
Let the children study about the healthy food items in detail and prepare a food
chart of breakfast, lunch, dinner based on their studies.
The class can answer the questions at the end of the chapter orally.
Chapter - 7
Water
AIM
• To understand uses of water
Water is very precious for us.
• To explore the ways in which water is useful for other living things
like plants and animals.
• To find out the ways of saving water.

Method
Day 1
This chapter depicts the importance of water as precious and useful resource.
Ask the students the about the different sources of water.You can ask
questions to your students like:
• Can human beings service longer without food on without water?
• What is your favourite activity done with water?
• Where all can you see water?
Allow the child to actively participate in the discussion and ask them to give
answers. Write the answer given by the children on the blackboard, in points
and discuss each correct answer. Explain to the students that water is a gift of
nature that both animal and people can use. Ask the students what would have
happened to their lives in the absence of water.
Introduce the topic on the uses of water by asking the children a few questions
like:
• What are the ways in which your family uses water?
• Why do we need water?
• Did any of the uses of water by your family was new for you?
Day 2
After the discussion, the teacher will read the chapter slowly in the class. She
will also try and make sure that each child should understand the concept in a
simple manner.
Upto this point conduct a quiz in your class that involves questions starting from
what if. For example what if we do not have clean drinking water?
Make sure that every child should come with at least one view. Collect the
information from every
child and conclude the activity by asking following questions:
• According to you, what is the most important use of water?
• As per your opinion, what is the least important use of water?
Try to improve the higher order thinking skills of the children by giving them a
situation like what will happen to us if we drink impure water? Should we buy
eatables and drinks from the roadside hawkers? Explain your answer.
Recapitulation
The teacher will recapitulate the topic by summarizing the topic like all living
things need water to live. We need water to drink and to brush our teeth. Like
us, animals and plants also need water.
The teacher can also guide the students to solve the exercises given after the
completion of the chapter. A few activities such as the picture-based activity
based on use and misuse of water will help to inculcate the better
understanding of the concept.
Revision
The class can answer the questions given at the end of the chapter. The
children can also revise the concept by holding a discussion on the topic water
is important, water is pure—save every drop of water.
Chapter - 8
Air

Method
Day 1
Give an introduction to the children about air. Ask them a few questions like
• Can they see Air?
• Where is air present?
• Is it present outside the classroom?
• Is it present inside the class room?
• Where can they see air?
• Can you feel air?
Allow the children to think and introspect about these questions. The basic aim
should be to focus on the properties of air. The teacher can explain each
property with the help of a group activity.
Teacher can take a plastic balloon and can trap air in it. Now ask the children, if
they can see air. Most of the children will say no. Try to make the children think
like if they can see air inside the balloon. A few children will say yes. Then put a
question like
• How do you know that there is air in the bag?
• Do you think that air is present outside the classroom?
Day 2
Send a group of four children outside the playground and ask them to trap air in
an air bag. When the child comes back with the trapped air inside the bag,
explain the children that air is present everywhere and it occupies space.
Conduct another activity to make the children understand that air has mass.
Take two balloons and ask any two volunteers from the children who can blow
air in the balloons. Hang the balloons at each end of the stick. Now hang the
stick from the center with a string. Ask the children what do you think will
happen? Make them understand that the end of the stick will bend towards the
inflated balloon side.
Day 3
Explain to the children that air is an essential and is necessary for our living.
Help them to conduct a breathing exercise. Ask the children to keep their hands
on their stomach and to breathe in. Now ask them to breathe out by keeping
their hands on their stomach. Ask the children what did they fill? What was the
movement of the stomach while breathing in and breathing out. This activity is
important for the children to understand that air is important for all of us.
Make the children understand the harmful effects of pollution. Ask the children
to suggest any are way in which they can help in keeping the air clean. Also tell
them that planting tress help in keeping the air clean. List all the ways on the
blackboard as suggested by the children for example riding on bicycle,
walking, planting trees around our home and taking are of the plants.
Recapitulation
Ask the class, to draw a flowchart that depicts the properties and various uses
of air. Ask them to conduct small experiments like how can they show that air
occupies space or air has weight.

Chapter - 9
Safety Rules
Aims:
To help the children understand the sources of risk
• At home
• On the road
• While travelling, e.g. in bus
• While swimming

Method
Day 1
While starting the chapter, make the children understand that you want to teach
them how to stay safe at different places.
Start the class by asking a few warm up questions like
• What do you understand by safety?
• What should you keep in mind while standing on a wet place?
• what are the safety rules that the children know?
Encourage the children to participate in the discussion and elaborate their
correct views to make the other children understand the sources of risks and
the necessary precautions that should be taken for it.
Divide the class into five or six groups. Give each group a theme like safety
rules at home, safety rules on the road, safety rules in the bus and safety rules
while swimming. Ask them to prepare a poster based on the appointed theme.
Each group has to present one poster where they can incorporate the do’s and
don’ts related to the particular theme. The students can later provide a gist
related to the particular theme. The gist can be explained by any one of the
representative from the group. The representative will explain the poster and
safety rule hidden behind it.
Day 2
You can also present certain situations to the children in the form of
worksheets, where a situation is written and the child has to write Yes or No
based on their understanding of the safety rules. For example,

Here comes the need to explain to the children that these rules should be
adopted while walking on the road or any other situation to secure themselves
from any sort of danger. You can explain them the difference in between the
road and the footpath. The children should know that they should walk with the
grownups and should hold their and while walking on the road. They should
know that they have to wear a helmet while travelling on a two wheeler and they
should wear the seat belt while travelling in the car.
Recapitulation
Let the children answer the questions like where should we walk on the road?
Where should we cross the road? Which traffic signal tells us to cross the road?
Etc.

Chapter - 10
My Family

Method
Day 1
The teacher can ask the class by asking the following questions:
• who all are the members of their family.
• Are their family small or big?
In this context, explain the children about their relationships with other people
such as the relatives apart from their father and mother.
Start the chapter with a with a small warm up exercise where the children will be
asked to draw faces on fingers. They can put a small puppet head. The children
can draw the different members of their family on their fingers.
Give each student a piece of construction paper along with their family photos
and a few pictures from magazines and newspapers. Ask the children to make
pictures of their favourite family members in it.
Day 2
On the basis of the knowledge about their family, the children will complete the
exercise. Ask one of the children to read the chapter aloud in the classroom.
In between the chapter, ask them the basic questions like
Whose family is big?
Whose family is small?
Summarize to the children the meaning of the family and its importance. Also
brief them the difference in between the joint family and the nuclear families.
Recapitulation
For the purpose of revision, ask the children to perform the following activities:
• Writing the names of the family members on a piece of paper
• Reading a few lines aloud in the classroom in form of an essay

Day 1
The teacher can try to engage the students in meaningful conversation about
sharing and caring.
Another important aspect in this chapter is to discuss sharing of some work at
home. Prepare a skill sheet for the children to answer. Incorporate questions
based on the degree of work they share in the family. For example
• Who helps you in eating your breakfast, lunch and dinner?
• Who wakes you up in the morning?
• Who washes your clothes?
• Who washes utensils?
• Who mops the floor?
• Who washes the fruits?
• Who takes care of the plants in the garden?
Check and discuss the answers given by them. Provide opportunities to the
students to share their personal experiences. Explain them the necessity of
sharing work and helping one another in a family.
Day 2
Ask them a few points a few points related to their contribution of work at home.
Work on the strategy of Think-pair-share. You can provide the students a time
structured situation like the following: Sonika’s mother has got fever. She is all
alone with her mother at the house. Her father has gone to office. What all are
the ways in which Sonika can help he parents?
Give some time to the children to think individually about this situation. They
can work in pairs to solve the problem and can share the ideas with the class. It
will help the children to develop better understanding of the concept. In this
way, you can help them to discuss and understand the caring attitude in a
family.
With this concept, read the chapter aloud in the class. Always emphasize and
give special attention on correct pronunciation. Ask the children to read the text
after you in order to improve their reading skills.

Day 1
The teacher should explain the significance of a house in our lives. Te teacher
can write the word HOUSE on a blackboard and can divide the class into two
parts. Each group will tell some points that are related to the characteristics of a
good house.. The teacher will list these points on the blackboard. Once the
children are done with their ideas, the teacher will shortlist the correct points
and will explain them to the children. The group with more number of correct
points will be considered as the winner.
The teacher will ask the children about the importance of a good house. She
will explain to the children the necessity of a house in our lives.
Day 2
The teacher can show a picture to the children where a child is living with her
family in a single room and another picture where the child is living with her
family in a big house which has a variety of rooms. With this, teacher can
explain the children about the different parts or different types of the rooms that
a house consist of.
• The teacher can also ask the students a few questions like
• In which room of the house do you sleep?
• In which type of a room do you eat your food?
• Why do we need a house?
You can also provide a worksheet to the children where there are different
types of rooms shown in it. The children have to write down the name of each
room in the space provided.
Day 3
The teacher will now talk about the different types of houses that are found.
She can arrange a small trip to a nearby village. Ask them to observe the home
of the villagers with the homes in which they live. This will help the children to
understand the basic concept of difference in between a Kutcha house and a
pucca house.
She can also assign them a craft activity where the children would be asked to
prepare a framework of the house with the help of thermocol, pins, fevicols and
colours.

followed in their homes. The child will learn to appreciate the cultural values of
their as well s other’ traditions. Encourage the children to learn about these
festivals through group discussion and sharing.
The teacher can bring placards or charts related to different festivals. This will
help in generating interest in the students related to their cultural traditions. For
example, you can show a picture to the children which pertains to any of the

of the street where they live. Explain to the children that the people who stay
near our home are called our neighbours.
The teacher can plan and take the children to a small visit in the town. She can
introduce the basic places that are found in the neighbourhood. Tell the
children about the following important places like
• School: The place where we learn an study new things
• Hospitals: Where sick people are given treatment.
• Bank: Where valuable things are kept
• Market: Where we can find many shops
The small visit will give a clear picture to the children about their
neighbourhood. Now the teacher can write a sentence on the board like There

some answers other than the places that they have visit.. This will help the

neighborhood areas. Divide the children into small groups and give them a
theme like what is the importance of good neighbours. Each group has to frame
at least five points. Later, discover their observations in the class along with
your explanation for the necessities of the neighbourhood.

the children that we should always remain humble and polite towards these

are helpful to you. Allow the children to brainstorm all the things that they feel
their friend do to help them. Write down the information on the blackboard. Give
a brief description to the children about the different peoples who help us.
Take the placards of different people who help us. For example, dentist, a

alike? Make sure that your power point presentation contains all the different
varieties of plants like and tall, short and bushy, very small and thin, and those
who can creep on the ground. Ask the children to select any one of the plants
that they would like to learn more about. The children will collect ten points
about their favourite plant and will read them aloud in the classroom.
Ask the children to draw the picture of this plant in their drawing book and to
label its different parts.
Show a chart depicting the parts of the plants and make the children
understand the basic idea about the different parts of the plants, their needs to
grow and their multiple uses. Make them understand that every part of the plant
has some specific work to perform.
Day 2
When the children have collected all the facts about their favourite plants,
divide them in a group of four. Ask them to share their work and to find the
similarities and differences in the facts collected. This will help them to
understand the various features of different plants. At this point of time,
introduce the topic of different types of plants, i.e. trees, shrubs, herbs,
climbers and creeper, etc.
When the children become aware of the different parts of the plants, explain to
them the needs of the plants to grow. You can perform a simple exercise by
dividing the children into two groups. Ask both the groups to plant the seed in
the garden.
You can give an assignment to the children to find out the various uses of plants
and to paste some photographs related to uses of plants in their scrapbook.
