 Week 8 Newsletter Term 1 2015 Professional Development All classified officers attended a regional workshop to learn more about the provision of quality classroom feedback to teachers. This was a 2 day workshop. I’d like to thank the following staff for their commitment to this work: Mrs Jennifer Davies HOSES, Ms Lynette McIntyre and Mr Liam Hackwood as they accompanied me to this course. I’d also like to acknowledge those who agreed to step up into acting leadership positions for those days to support students, staff & parents. Mr Mark Wrigley acted as Principal, Mrs Leanne Youitt and Mr Mark Nelson shared DP roles as did Mrs Loren Chaplin & Mrs Noelinda Lawlor. Thanks to all for their efforts. Professional Development Weeks 8-­‐10 Staff will be engaged in the following work in professional development 8 SWPBS SWPBS team 9 Pedagogy Framework Overview/Archer Admin Team 10 2.30 Admin 3.15 PAC P-­‐12 Responsibilities regarding ICP’s TBD Alana DeBruyn Passing of a former Bounty Boulevard State School Pupil I would like to acknowledge that this term the North Lakes Community suffered a tragic loss in the passing of a former student, Adam Kielty. Adam enrolled at Bounty Boulevard State School in 2013 and graduated as a Year 6 student last year. I would like to inform the local community that I am being guided by the North Coast Region in partnership with North Lakes State College around the support that as a school can be given to this family. I understand that the P&C are also exploring avenues of support for the family. It is my understanding that families have the opportunity of expressing their support through external agencies who are fundraising for the family. Parent Workshop and Increasing Skilled Volunteers in our School Parents, I just wanted to inform you of how thrilled the teachers & I were when we recently ran parent workshops for literacy. The second workshop had 25 parents and we nearly had to find a new venue. This indicated the commitment from you as parents. We have already received very positive feedback from parents. Special thanks to our facilitators Mrs Noelinda Lawlor & Mrs Lee Griffith for your presentations. I have encouraged parents not only to assist at home with their own children but also support other children at school in the literacy blocks. We will require all parents, grandparents & carers to hold a Positive Notice Blue Card. Blue Card applications forms are available from the front office. Literacy Blocks The whole school has commenced work on reconfiguring a consistent approach to reading across the school. The intent is for teachers to be conducting guided reading lessons 4-­‐5 times a week. We have redesigned teacher aide schedules and a variety of our timetables in order to accommodate this school wide pedagogical refocus. Parents could I appeal to you to ensure you get your children to school on time for the commencement of the school day. Literacy blocks for many classes commence sharply at 8.55am. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Curriculum Review The Curriculum Review findings are now on the website. The executive summary is there for parents to read. We as a staff are creating an action plan this week to address the findings. Key findings • An explicit school improvement agenda is yet to be developed. • There is no explicit improvement agenda in place, however, the principal and the leadership team articulate a commitment to improvement and recognise the need for an explicit improvement agenda understood by all members of the school community. • The tone of the school is calm, positive and friendly and there is a strong focus on the promotion of student engagement. • The school has adopted School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) as the critical foundation upon which to develop a school-­‐wide, shared responsibility for student management, and to foster a culture that promotes learning. • The school leadership team roles and responsibilities lack clarity. • Leadership staff is yet to develop clear role and responsibility statements and this has led to some confusion and inconsistency among staff particularly with curriculum direction. • A systematic approach to providing opportunities for teachers to work in year level planning teams has been implemented to share good practice and focus on improved student outcomes. • Some staff take opportunities to engage in informal feedback. There is no formal school-­‐wide process for teachers to gain feedback and coaching. • Overarching curriculum frameworks linked to school based programs are yet to be fully developed. • The school is currently developing a whole school curriculum plan based on the Australian Curriculum. The Principal and other school leaders are keen to provide a clear focus on building continuity of curriculum direction with a strong focus on teaching and learning. • There is some evidence of strategic collaboration with partners to strengthen student engagement and improve outcomes. • The principal has acknowledged the need to strengthen these partnerships to assist with student engagement and improving outcomes. • There is a sense of optimism and commitment moving forward. • The newly appointed principal sees the importance of establishing a strong sense of school community and a systematic whole school approach to teaching and learning. School Student Leadership Conference The school leadership team will be participating in a conference with the Halogen group. Ms Male will be accompanying our newly inducted school leaders to the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. This conference will be an all-­‐day event to build leadership density of our new student leadership team. The program will consist of keynote talks, multimedia presentations and interactive workshops that seek a range of specific outcomes for young people who aspire to lead themselves and others well. I attended this conference at my previous school in 2014 and it was outstanding! There were approximately 2000 children from across the state. I will ask our student council to place an excerpt in our Week 10 newsletter. Staff Changes Mr Dan Isele one of our Deputy Principal’s has accepted a contract with Apple for the remainder of the year. This is a wonderful opportunity for Dan and although his expertise will be sorely missed, I sincerely wish him well in this venture. Dan will be assisting other schools to develop transformational learning environments. An expression of interest (EOI) has been released externally for a suitable person to relieve in Dan’s position for the next 3 terms. This was distributed Monday and will be finalised in the last week of Term 1. As our school enrolment has continued to grow it has necessitated the formation of a 47th class. The growth has been significant in the upper school. This will effectively mean that the 5/6 Ms Nadine Male’s class will be reconfigured. We will form a straight year 5 class and reduce the oversized classes. The teacher for this new class will be confirmed by the last week and all parents will be notified with a note going home confirming arrangements. This will have a domino effect in relation to the floor plan change of the school & trigger several other classes moving. In the final week of school I would like to appeal for a few fathers to assist in our School Officers George and Steve and teachers in the physical movement of furniture. I’d like to encourage all parents to manage this change process in a positive fashion which will support the children and staff. Miss Natalie McKay has been appointed permanent to Maryborough West State School for the start of Term 2, congratulations Natalie. Natalie’s replacement has yet to be confirmed. Amy English, our Defence School Transition Aid is leaving us at the end of Term 1. Amy’s positon will be temporally fulfilled until she returns from maternity leave. Returning from maternity leave are Meg Rosser & Renee Turnbull. These ladies will commence part time in Term 3. Harmony Day Please see the EALD teacher’s excerpt re Harmony Day – Harmony Day is about celebrating multiculturalism in our community. Each year Australia celebrates ‘Harmony Day’ on the 21st March. Next week is quite busy, as there are other special days on including ‘Bullying – No Way!’ So, we thought we could have a ‘Harmony Week’ of celebrations instead to avoid clashes of events. Prep to Year 2 will be creating a balloon display to share their cultural heritage. A balloon template is provided next to the slide. Each student has a balloon worksheet. The students draw a picture of themselves on their balloon then write their name and class underneath. Next they have a chat with their mum, dad, grandparents or caregivers to find out about the cultural background of their family. They then record their cultural background on their balloon (for example: French, Italian and Australian). I will visit the Prep to Year 2 classes on Friday, 20th March to collect the balloons so I can create a display in the LIC. Years 3 to 6 have the opportunity to participate in a Harmony Week treasure hunt using QR codes. Students receive a Harmony Day Quiz sheet on Monday, 16th March. During the lunch breaks, they locate the QR codes around the school and watch the videos to answer the questions. If students do not have access to an iPad, a link to view the videos is also available in the studio on the Harmony Day Challenge slide. I will collect any completed quiz sheets on Friday, 20th March so I can hand out certificates for those students who have participated. Years 3 to 6 also have the opportunity to join in multicultural art activities. Places for the art activities are limited. To ensure some students from each class get to participate, I have sent around a table for you to record the names of different students from your class that would like to participate in the different activities offered through the week. All art activities will be held Monday 16th to Friday 20th March in the LIC during 1st and 2nd breaks. The students will need to attend both breaks (outside eating times) to have enough time to finish their beautiful creations. Presidents Report 2015 Last year saw many changes within our P&C including the appointment of a new principal and our first ever operations manager. The year was made so much better due to the participation of our dedicated P&C business members and those many volunteers who helped at every event we h eld. My report reflected on many of our long-­‐term members and their achievements as well as those new members who have made our P&C what it is today. Breakfast has arrived! The café will now be doing breakfast for students from 8:10 – 8:30. Check out the menu at the café and treat the kids to a healthy breakfast. The café is also doing “café” style coffee for only $3 – available to parents and staff only. Hot breakfast specials available on Wednesday mornings!
