Register at www.ade.org “The ADE Summer Seminars do a beautiful job of blending the big issues in humanities education with the more technical challenges of running an English department. I have always taken away from the seminars practical ideas about longrange planning, programmatic change, and dayto-day management. Part of the usefulness of the seminars is simply talking to other chairs. A conversation with a fellow chair, prompted by a Seminar East plenary session we had just attended, gave me the idea for how to organize what turned out to be a very successful departmental reconceptualization of our PhD program.” ADE-ADFL East • Arlington • 3–7 June —Kent Cartwright, University of Maryland, College Park “The chance to share war stories and hear what other people are finding works for them is the best part of the experience. When you learn that your private issues are in fact widely shared and that others have successfully dealt with them, your job seems a little easier.” —Samuel Cohen, University of Missouri, Columbia For more information, please call the ADE at 646 576-5133. ADE Midwest • Kansas City • 24–28 June Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Each June the ADE arranges two seminars where chairs and directors of undergraduate and graduate studies in ADE-member departments share information and consult about issues facing their departments and the field. This year Seminar East will be held jointly with the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages. Each seminar features a workshop for new chairs, led by two seasoned administrators, where those about to start or just completing their first year as department chairs can glean practical advice and have questions answered about all aspects of chairing. •A preseminar workshop and special sessions for directors of undergraduate studies will take place at Seminar Midwest. •A preseminar workshop and special sessions for directors of graduate studies will take place at Seminar Midwest. Arlington Memorial Bridge “The ADE Summer Seminars recognize the three-way pressure on academic chairs (from students, from faculty, and particularly from senior administration) and offer both new and veteran department administrators helpful, concrete advice—not just to help us endure the position but to allow us to thrive within its unique institutional place. The seminars offer us a chance to share professional strategies with colleagues who truly understand the challenges we face in what can occasionally be a lonely office.” —Susan Miller, Santa Fe College “I enjoyed the mix of humor and angst, anecdote and data, expertise and audience-member catharsis.” —Gretchen Ronnow, Wayne State College “The new chairs’ workshop leaders were awesome. I was able to mine a lot of wisdom from them—and from all the attendees.” Register at www.ade.org —Becky McShane, Weber State University ADE-ADFL East 3–7 June • Hilton Arlington, Arlington, VA Hosts Departments of English and of Modern and Classical Languages, George Mason Univ.
