It’s Time to Celebrate Motherhood
Celebrated with great
enthusiasm in the U.S.,
Mother’s Day falls on
Sunday, May 10. It’s Anna
Jarvis who’s known as
“the mother of Mother’s
Day,” for she so adored
her mom that she
campaigned for a holiday
to celebrate all mothers.
Jarvis herself never
married nor bore children,
but this didn’t stop her
from lobbying those in
power to set aside a day
to honor mothers. In
1914, U.S. President
Woodrow Wilson made
the second Sunday in
May “Mother’s Day.”
Meanwhile, in the U.K.,
a holiday honoring
motherhood dates back
much further. In the
1600s, the fourth
Sunday of Lent was
dedicated as Mothering
Sunday. Church service
was devoted to the
Virgin Mary, and families
were encouraged to
attend services not at
their local parish but at
their “mother” church, or
cathedral. The tradition
of Mothering Sunday
largely died out in the
19th century, but when
American servicemen
flooded Europe during
World War II—bringing
their American Mother’s
Day holiday with them—
Mothering Sunday became
popular once again.
Mother’s Day is now
celebrated in March or
May in countries around
the globe, including
Australia, Canada, Spain,
India, and South Africa.

On Memorial
Day, we
commemorate
our brave
Soldiers who
sacrificed
their lives for
our freedom.
They did not
live long
enough to
experience
the privileges
that we enjoy.
Our success
stands on the
shoulders of
their sacrifice.
Let us unite
and sing in
praise of
these
unknown
heroes.
Resident Highlight:
Meet Anna Shannon. Anna has lived at Bozeman Lodge for three years and
she is currently the Resident Council President. Anna is proud to say she is a
native of Montana. She was born in Dillon and then also lived in
Lewistown. Her father was a Baptist minister until 1942 when he retired and
moved his family to a farm in Missouri. No running water or electricity
made the move unpleasant for Anna but she managed.
Anna started an education in nursing at a state hospital in Missouri and then
earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at the University of Missouri. She
then earned her Master’s in Psychiatric Nursing from Washington
University in St. Louis. Anna then taught for the University of Missouri for
6 years, and then decided to go back to school at the University of California
at San Francisco. She attended the university while waiting for them to
develop a doctoral program in nursing. She was one of only five students in
the 1st class of the nursing doctorate program at the University of California
at San Francisco. Only two of the five students graduated. Upon graduation
Anna taught at the University of California for five years. In 1975 she
moved back to Montana and was the Dean of the College of Nursing at
Montana State University, Bozeman. She remained in that position until her
retirement in 1990.
After her retirement she enjoyed traveling to many memorable places. One
trip she took was with some friends that all had motor homes and they drove
across the AlCan Highway for the 50th Anniversary of the highway
construction. She said the scenery and the trip were magnificent. She has
driven to all 50 states and has attended a number of Women’s Basketball
Final Four Games. Some of the places she watched the Final Four are
Austin, TX, San Hose, CA, Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Philadelphia. Many
times when she would travel for conferences she would extend the time and
drive the back roads so that she could enjoy the scenery.
Anna is not a morning person so look for her in the afternoon reading the
newspaper in the lobby and during college basketball she can be found at the
MSU Women’s basketball games. She also enjoys coming to happy hour on
Wednesday. If you haven’t met Anna, introduce yourself next time you see
her.
