Course description
This is what students will see IF they read the course handbook
This course is for students who want to use English to learn about legal, political,
business and other issues.
本科目は、法律、政治、ビジネスなどについて、英語を使って学びたい学生を対象とします。
In this course you will develop your ability to read, research, explain, discuss, and write
about global issues.
In the Spring semester, you will use easy-to-understand books to develop your
confidence, fluency, and ability to express your ideas about global issues. You will look
at two or three different global issues of your choice and will regularly read and take
notes, as well as practice planning, writing, and revising different types of writing about
these issues. In the Autumn semester you will do 2-3 research and writing projects
about global issues, using web-based global issues resources to develop your research
skills and knowledge. Working in cycles of about 5-6 weeks, you will have many
chances to explain and discuss your research in pairs or small groups with other
students, and to read and respond to each other's writing.
In both semesters, you will focus on gathering, analyzing, and re-organizing information
and ideas, as well as on writing clearly about your research, sharing your knowledge,
and responding to other students.
この授業では、地球規模の諸問題に関して読み、リサーチし、討論し、レポートやエッセイなど
を書く能力を培う。
春学期では、比較的簡単な本を用いて地球規模の問題に関する自らの意見を表現する自信
をつけ、英語で書く能力を養う。自分で選択した２〜３冊の本を定期的に読み、ノートを取りな
がら、その問題についての様々なスタイルの文章を計画し、書き、推敲する仕方を学ぶ。秋学
期では、ウェブ上の資料を用いながら地球規模の問題に関する２〜３つのリサーチおよびライ
ティング課題に取り組み、リサーチスキルと知識を養う。５〜６週間で１つの課題に取り組み、
リサーチの内容について他の学生とペアまたは少人数のグループでディスカッションをしたり、
互いの書いたものを読んでフィードバックを行ったりする。

書くこと、 自らの知識を他の学生と共有し意見を交換することに焦点が置かれている。

Weeks 2-13: Two or three cycles of researching, note-taking, explaining, and
writing on global issues of students’ choice
Week 14: Reflection and self-evaluation/assessment
Week 15: Class survey and review of the course
In the Autumn semester, students are required to produce at least two reports,
including a minimum 800-word report by the end of the semester.

In the Spring semester, students are required to produce at least two reports,
including a minimum 500-word report by the end of the semester.
(1) Attendance of 80% or more, (2) active participation in class activities, (3)
weekly preparation of 1-2 hours outside class, and (4) completion of writing
assignments are required to pass this course.
単位修得のためには (1) ８０％以上の出席、(2) 授業への積極的な参加、(3) 毎週１
〜２時間の予習、(4) ライティング課題の提出、が必要となる。
