11th Meeting of the Ministers of Agriculture of CIHEAM’s
Member Countries
Press release
19 May, 2015
At the invitation of H.E. Mrs AssunÄÅo Cristas, Minister of Agriculture and
Sea of Portugal and in the presence of several representatives of
international organisations, the Ministers of Agriculture of the 13 member
states of CIHEAM will hold their 11th meeting in Cascais on the 22nd and 23rd
of September 2015.
The discussion will focus on “Better Mediterranean Agriculture and Food for
Better Life”. The issues of sustainable intensification, innovation on
agricultural systems and food quality models for a better life will represent
the main axes of this discussion. The promotion of the Mediterranean Diet,
the waste challenges, the green growth as well as the importance of the
Mediterranean Sea in the economies of the region and all activities related
to the promotion of the growth of a “blue economy” will be highlighted.
The role of the international and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation will also
be addressed, without forgetting the need to implement applied
agricultural research models based on Mediterranean networking and
partnership. Beyond these challenges, the Ministerial will be the occasion to
discuss the Mediterranean dimension of the global ”Post 2015 Development
Agenda” and the food issues in the Euro-Mediterranean Dialogue.
It should be noted that the first meeting of CHIEAM member states
Ministers of Agriculture was held in Rome in 1999. Since then, successive
meetings have been held in Rabat (2000), Athens (2001), Beirut (2002),
Paris (2004), Cairo (2006), Zaragoza (2008), Istanbul (2010), Malta (2012)
and Alger (2014).

CIHEAM
Founded in 1962 under the auspices of the Council of Europe and the OECD,
the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies
(CIHEAM) is an intergovernmental organisation comprising thirteen
member states (Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon,
Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey).
CIHEAM is at the service of its member states to promote multilateral
cooperation in the Mediterranean in the areas of agriculture, food, fishery
and rural territories, with the aim to respond to the needs of the States. We
do not work on the Mediterranean. We work for the Mediterranean and
therefore with Mediterranean populations. The objectives to be achieved
within each one of our actions include providing concrete solutions, sharing
experiences and avoiding the waste of knowledge.
In pursuing this cooperation mission, CIHEAM uses the tools of specialized
training, networked research, scientific diplomacy and of political
partnership. Through its activities, the CIHEAM contributes therefore to the
elaboration of a global, structural and all-encompassing vision for
development in the Mediterranean.
The 170 permanent agents and hundreds of consultants that work regularly
at CHIEAM are divided among the 5 headquarters of the Organisation: the 4
Mediterranean agronomic institutes (MAI) based in Bari (Italy), Chania
(Greece), Montpellier (France), and Zaragoza (Spain); the General
Secretariat is located in Paris (France).
