FACULTY:
Gigi Robison, MSN, RN, AOCN works as the Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist at The Christ
Hospital. She earned her BSN from University of Cincinnati, and earned her Masters degree in
Oncology Nursing at Case Western Reserve University. She received her OCN (“Oncology
Certified Nurse”) credential in 1990, 1994, and 1998, and received her AOCN (“Advanced
Oncology Certified Nurse”) credential in 1997, 2001, 2005, 2009, and 2013.
Gigi has practiced in oncology nursing for thirty three years. She frequently presents on topics
related to oncology nursing, and has taught courses for Oncology Nursing Certification Courses
since 1990. Her oncology nursing experiences include working with pediatric and adult
populations, and working in inpatient and outpatient oncology settings. Ms. Robison has been a
faculty member for the ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy course from 1999 to 2013, and she
has served as a medical-legal consultant for chemotherapy extravasation cases. Gigi brings a
unique blend of experience, humor, and story telling to this presentation.

MISSION STATEMENT:
Oncology Nurse Consultants is committed to ensuring quality oncology nursing care in a
cost-effective manner through education and consultation.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Experienced oncology nurses who desire to update their knowledge of oncology
nursing, or nurses who are preparing to sit for the OCN exam.
CE INFORMATION
This program is provided by The Christ Hospital and has been awarded 7.66 contact
hours of continuing education credit. Participants must attend at least 80% of the CE
activity and complete an evaluation of the CE activity.
The planners and presenters of this CE activity have disclosed no conflict of interest
and have no financial interest related to this activity. Commercial support is being

The Christ Hospital, (OH-323, 8/1/2013) is an approved provider of continuing nursing
education by the Ohio Nurses Association (OBN-001-91), an accredited approver by the

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This one day course is designed to provide oncology nurses with a broad foundation of
oncology nursing knowledge, based on the 2015 Oncology Nursing Certification
Corporation (ONCC) Test Blueprint, and to provide nurses with an opportunity to
practice their test-taking skills.

AGENDA TOPICS AND OBJECTIVES
Health Promotion, Disease Prevention, Screening, and Early Detection
- State five strategies to prevent, detect or screen for major cancers, including breast, prostate, colon,
skin, and cervical cancer.
Scientific Basis for Practice
- Discuss two key concepts related to each of these components of the scientific basis for oncology
nursing practice, including carcinogenesis, immunology, genetics, tumor classification, common
metastatic sites, and clinical trials
Major Treatment Modalities
- Describe two key concepts related to each of these major cancer treatment modalities:
radiation, chemotherapy, biotherapy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplant.

Psychosocial Dimensions of Care.
- Discuss two key concepts related to each of these areas of psychosocial dimensions of care: anxiety,
depression, altered body image, cultural issues, and loss of personal control.
Test Taking Skills for the OCN exam
- List five test-taking strategies that will assist you in preparing to take the OCN exam.
Oncological Emergencies (Metabolic)
- Discuss one risk factor, one prevention strategy, and two interventions to manage patients who are
experiencing metabolic oncological emergencies, including DIC, septic shock, TLS, anaphylaxis, and
hypercalcemia.
Oncological Emergencies (Structural)
- Discuss one risk factor, one prevention strategy, and two interventions to manage patients who are
experiencing structural oncological emergencies, including cardiac tamponade, SCC, and SVCS.
Managing Symptoms in Oncology Patients
- Describe four assessment components and four management strategies (including pharmacological and
non-pharmacological strategies) for managing alterations in comfort, alterations in protective
mechanisms, and alterations in circulatory function.
- Describe four assessment components and four management strategies (including pharmacological and
non-pharmacological strategies) for managing alterations in GI and GU function, alterations in respiratory
function, and alterations in neurological function.
Sexuality Issues for Oncology Patients
- Describe one risk factor, two assessment components, and two interventions for persons with cancer
who are experiencing reproductive issues and sexual dysfunction.
Palliative and End of Life Care
- Discuss principles and interventions related to palliative and end of life care, including the loss and grief;
bereavement process; symptom management; and hospice care.
Cancer Survivorship
- Explain the concept of cancer survivorship, and the management of acute and late effects, long term
follow up, and other survivorship issues.
Professional Performance
- Discuss two key concepts related to each of these areas of professional performance: cancer
resources, evidenced based practice; education process; legal issues; patient advocacy; and quality
assurance.
