IIT Roorkee
The very concept of technical education in this continent Asia came into being with the setting up of this glorious Institute as Thomason College
of Civil Engineering as early as October 19, 1847. Post Independence, elevated to the level of University in 1949, its prestigious
present day designation of IIT was conferred upon it on September 21, 2001. As identified by our former HRD minister, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi,
IIT Roorkee has contributed to the nation’s growth as no other technical Institute has.
The institute has produced seven chairmen of the Indian Railway Board, two presidents of the Confederation of Indian Industry, six Directors
of the Indian Institutes of Technology. The student-to-academic-staff ratio is 2.6:1 and that of UG/PG students was 1.4:1.
Some of the major universities which have a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with IIT Roorkee are National University of
Singapore (NUS), Singapore; Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland (ETH);Technische Universität München (TUM), Germany;
Institut National des Télécommunications, Évry, France; University of Texas at Dallas, USA, University of Waterloo, Canada. Research
organizations in India which have a MOU with IIT Roorkee include Department of Atomic Engineering (DAE), Mumbai;
Intel Technology India Pvt. Ltd.
Convener’s Address
From time immemorial, man has been striving for excellence in various cross-roads of life. By any means, excellence is never an accident, it is
the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, skilful execution and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities. And once you
have achieved excellence, you will never be content with mediocrity. And when we talk of excellence, a sequacious way of self-empowerment is
underway because until and unless we believe in ourselves and strengthen ourselves, excellence is elusive. Empowerment comes from within
and typically it’s stemmed and fostered by self-assurance.
To feel empowered is to feel free from the shackles of prejudiced vista. At this particular juncture, its our imagination and ideas which direct us
to the pinnacles of impeccable innovations of several ilk. With the backdrop of United Nation’s observance of International Year of Light & Light
based Technologies in 2015, the invigorating theme of “PHOTONIZING I” speaks of individual empowerment. Its when we are empowered that
we head towards the achievement of efficacious and exemplar excellence and that’s what we call the photonization of identity.
