World Water Day – 23/03/2015
On 23/03/2015 The Institution of Engineers (India) Pune Local Centre celebrated World Water
Day jointly with Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran, Ground Water Survey & Development Agency,
Indian Water Works Association, Indian Plumbing Association & Marathi Vidnyan Parishad.
At the outset the dignitaries on the Dias performed ‘Jalpoojan’ by offering flowers to a special
decorated vase (Kalash). Prof. R. V. Saraf, Convener of the programme and Karyadhyaksha,
Marathi Vidnyan Parishad, welcomed the dignitaries & the delegates on behalf of Chairman IE(I)
PLC and all the organizations. This was followed by felicitations of the Guests & dignitaries on the
Dias.
The Convener explained the importance of today’s Theme - "Water for Sustainable Development".
Water is required for Production of Power, Food, Industrial Activities & Domestic use. There is
urgent need to think and act seriously for protection & preservation of our Water Resources. He
also appealed the august gathering to begin with the ‘Action Plan’ for conservation & reduction in
consumption of fresh water coupled with reuse & recycling of wastewater.
Mr. B. D. Yamgar, Chief Engineer MJP, Mr. Suresh Khandale , Director GSDA, Mr. Dayanand Panse,
Hon. Secretary IWWA & Mr. Pravin Bora Chairman IPA, Pune Chapter explained the role &
commitment of their respective organizations to ensure adequate water for Sustainable
Development.
Dr. R. R. Sonde, V. P. Thermax in his keynote address highlighted various issues of Water
Management. He said we have to work both on Micro & Macro level. The technologies have to be
developed to take up various challenges in Water Management. Scientists, Engineers &
Technocrat have to come together to prepare a road map to ensure Water for Sustainable
Development.
Chief Guest Er. A. M. Khapre, in his address said it is unique to note that Seven Organizations
came together to celebrate World Water Day. He presented the availability of Water in Bhima
basin & need of proper planning to support the growth. He also said there is need to combat
drastic changes in Rain fall pattern due to climate change.
Convener R. V. Saraf requested all to form a human chain to take pledge that, “We all together
Will Act to ensure Water for Sustainable Development”. Er. Aradhana Deshmukh Co- Convener
conducted the program. Er. V. N. Shinde proposed vote of thanks.
The Firodiya Auditorium of the Institution was packed to capacity – more than 120 audience.
