RUSSELL PERRY
Susan Hackwood is executive director
of the California Council on Science and
Technology (CCST), and Professor of
Electrical Engineering at UCR. She received a Ph.D. in Solid State
Ionics in 1979 from DeMontfort University, UK, at age 24. Before
joining academia, she worked at AT&T Bell Labs, where she
invented and named the electrowetting effect, now used in many
micro devices. In 1984 she joined UCSB as Professor of Electrical
and Computer Engineering.
In 1990, Dr. Hackwood became the founding Dean of the Bourns
College of Engineering at UCR, and the first woman dean of a
major research university in the U.S. She holds seven patents, is
a Fellow of the IEEE and the AAAS, and holds honorary degrees
from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Ph.D.) and DeMontfort
University, UK (D.Sc.).
While earning his undergraduate
degree in Electrical Engineering, Perry
was involved in numerous student
organizations and activities on campus. In addition to serving
as chair of the IEEE, he was a member of the Honors Program,
Tau Beta Phi and IEEE’s Eta Kappa Nu. His commitment to
diversity pushed him to work in multi-cultural and inter-major environments while on campus, a move that will prove
essential for success in our globalized society. Perry has been
accepted into the graduate program at Meggitt PLC, a global
engineering group specializing in extreme environment components and smart sub-systems for aerospace, defense and energy
markets, where he will complete a three-year accelerated international leadership program. Following his work at Meggitt,
he plans to return to academia and continue his education.
