President’s Welcome
President’s Welcome
President’s Welcome
NGS Members, Conference Attendees, Speakers, Sponsors, and Exhibitors:
On behalf of the NGS Board of Directors and staff, I want to welcome you to the 2015 Family
History Conference, Crossroads of America in St. Charles, Missouri. Lectures will cover topics
with special emphasis on Missouri and the surrounding states, migration into and out of the
Midwest, methodology, analysis, problem solving, genetics, technology, and military records.
We hope you will find time to visit the nearby St. Louis County Library, which is the home of
the NGS Book Loan Collection.
We were pleased to be able to offer three pre-conference events on Tuesday, the BCG Education
Fund Workshop, Librarians’ Day (sponsored by ProQuest), and German Studies:
Understanding German Records and Methodology (presented by the St. Louis Genealogical
Society, the local host of our conference).
St. Louis is the home of the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC). We are pleased to have
Bryan McGraw, director of the NPRC, speaking during a special evening event on Thursday.
We hope you will be able to take time out of your evening to come hear him speak about the
important work of the NPRC.
We want to thank all of our sponsors. Ancestry, FamilySearch, FindMyPast, and Mary F.
Berthold are Platinum sponsors. The St. Louis Genealogical Society has sponsored the
conference at the Gold level. ProQuest is a Silver sponsor.
We certainly want to thank our exhibitors and speakers as well as the St. Louis Genealogical
Society, our local host, and all those who have volunteered to help make the conference a
success. Without the support of so many, our program would not be possible.
Thank you for attending the conference and supporting the National Genealogical Society. We
hope that what you learn will help you break through your brick walls!
Jordan Jones

About NGS
About NGS
Introduction
Founded in 1903, the National Genealogical Society is a dynamic and
growing membership of individuals and groups from all over the
country—and the world—who share a common love of genealogy and
family history. NGS can assist researchers of all levels to uncover the
past.
The rich ethnic diversity that characterizes the United States includes
countless personal histories waiting to be uncovered. NGS can be your
portal to this endeavor with its premier annual conference, ever-growing
selection of “how to” materials, educational offerings, member services,
and numerous books and publications. NGS has something for everyone.
We warmly invite you to join us. Your membership in NGS will help
you gain more enjoyment from your hobby or professional or intellectual
pursuit. NGS membership places you among a long-established group
of genealogists who first came together more than one hundred years
ago to promote the thrill of discovering and accurately recording family
histories!
To join, visit the NGS booth (number 201) in the Exhibit Hall.

Genealogical Proof
by Thomas W. Jones
Mastering Genealogical Proof, a unique

the lives of research subjects. The text
guides readers in acquiring genealogical
skills transcending chronological, ethnic,
geopolitical, and religious boundaries.
Mastering Genealogical Proof includes real
research problems that allow students to
practice the concepts introduced in the text.
Solutions to the research problems are also
included, as well as a glossary of technical
terms and an extensive resource list.

Conference Highlights
Introduction
Opening Session—Wednesday, 13 May, 8:00 a.m., W101
Setting the stage for Crossroads of America, J. Mark Lowe will tell us
about The Tales of Pioneer Paths: Rivers, Roads, & Rails. While traveling
by rivers, roads, or rails, our ancestors’ determination pushed them to
relocate to a new place with perceived opportunities. Along the way,
the pioneers struggled with life and death issues, shortage of food
and water, unkindness of the elements, equipment malfunctions and
breakdowns, dangers of highwaymen and marauders, and then finally
they experienced the joy of reaching their destination and new home.
Door Prizes (Winners must be present to claim.):
• One free full-conference registration for the NGS 2016 Family History
Conference, 4–7 May, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, courtesy of NGS.

Weather. Stories of winter through the centuries and across the country
illustrate how weather affected our ancestors’ lives.
