This week will, of course, be unsettling as, due to the two public holidays (Monday and Friday), we have a three-day week. The school will, never the less, function normally, with Mrs Meintjes in the hot seat while I am away. Next Friday (8 May) we will celebrate MotherÊs Day at school. All Crawford Italia Mothers (or a replacement Mom if necessary) are invited to come to school at 08.00, where they will be entertained by the pupils in the Piazza before enjoying refreshments in the Staffroom. I regret to inform parents that one of our permanent coaches, Coach Mo, has resigned from Grassroots to take up a position with Bounce. This will be effective end May. I would like to thank Coach Mo for the wonderful service that he has given to our school and wish him well with his new venture. Coach Sheldon (known to me and the pupils) will replace Coach Mo for Phys Ed lessons, while Coach Goofy (Gavin Prangley) will take over Coach MoÊs coaching role. I have needed to make a late change to the Extramural Programme for Gr 3 and 4 Netball. We have been informed that matches will be played on Friday afternoons. We will, therefore, cancel netball on a Thursday, but have practices on Monday and Wednesday, with matches on Fridays (together with the Gr 1 and 2 fixtures – please see the newsletter for details). Best Wishes Owen Kuyper Principal !1 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 Extra-mural News As in past terms, I am very pleased with the very high participation level of the Crawford Italia pupils in extramural activities. I have, however, been disappointed by the attendance at extramural activities – especially by Gr 0 and 1 pupils. May I appeal to parents to please assist their child by telling them daily what activity they are doing and ensuring that they pack the correct kit for their chosen activity. Please remember that pupils are not allowed to play tennis or netball if they are not wearing running shoes with white soles – pupils are not allowed onto courts with black soles or without shoes. Inter school matches start this week when the Under 9/10 Soccer team plays a fixture against Eden College on Wednesday afternoon at Eden. Like other age groups, we have 19 players participating in this age group. Only 10 players are chosen to play in the 8-a-side match and, therefore, players will be rotated during the term to ensure that everybody is given a fair chance to represent their school. Each of the core curriculum subjects (English, 2nd Additional Language, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Option 1 and Option 2) will be assessed in turn on a Wednesday, from 7.45 – 8.45 each week (it is very important that pupils are not late for school). At other schools, and in future years at Crawford Italia, there will be more than one class per grade. A standardised test is written by all pupils in the grade to ensure that the level of assessment in the different classes is the same. The Standardised Test Time Table at Crawford Italia for this Trimester is: Day Date Period Subject Wednesday 22 April 1 and 2 English Wednesday 29 April 1 and 2 Afrikaans Wednesday 6 May 1 and 2 Maths Wednesday 13 May 1 and 2 Geography Wednesday 20 May 1 and 2 History Wednesday 27 May 1 and 2 Science Wednesday 3 June 1 and 2 Option 1 Wednesday 10 June 1 and 2 Option 2 These Standardised Tests, together with the exams, which are written in June (Gr 5-7) and November (Gr 4-7) each year, form the formal assessment section of a subjects assessment mark. If parents have any questions regarding the Standardised Tests, please donÊt hesitate to speak to Mrs Albers or myself. !4 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 Grade 0 Welcome back for our second term of the year. This term will be packed full of exciting inquiry related activities and outings for the children. Our Unit of Inquiry for the term is; Art is a means of creative expression. Show-and-tell Please support the children's interests in the unit of inquiry by sending different items to school related to the inquiry, for example books, articles, paints, clay, paintbrushes, paintings, iPad images, etc. Phonics Please ensure that you continue encouraging the correct letter formation for their name, first letter only as a capital and the rest lower case. This week we will be focussing on the phonics letter "i" and next week the letter "r". Please support your child's interest with regards to the phonics program, by sending different items to school relating to the relevant letter. Reading Eggs (Free app) Please ensure that you have received the information letter about Reading Eggs. This letter provides you with the user name and password. If you have not received one of these letters, please speak to your child's teacher. This is a reading program that allows children to progress at their own pace. If you are not sure how it works, please do not hesitate to ask for assistance with regards to this. Maths Start to talk about mom and dad's telephone numbers and home address. Concepts like more than, less than, equal to; many and fewer; ordinal numbers, like first, second, third, etc. Talk to them about the different types of coins and notes, 20c, 50c, R1, R2, R5, R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200. Things to collect Any old clothes that can be used for dress-up play, old jewellery, leftover pieces of wrapping paper, newspapers and magazines (please check these for inappropriate pictures before bringing them in); old Christmas or birthday cards and any other antiwaste materials that can be recycled. Dates to remember (Grade 0 specific) Thursday 30 April - Art on One outing !5 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 Sensory Day Fun During our first term, the children enjoyed their very first sensory day. Sensory play includes any activity that stimulates your childÊs senses: touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. Sensory activities and sensory tables facilitate exploration and naturally encourage children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate and explore. Spending time stimulating their senses helps children develop cognitively, linguistically, socially and emotionally, physically and creatively. !6 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 Grade 1 Magic in Grade 1 Each day at school we work on developing different concepts. We have been working hard on developing our number concept. We love working with numbers, but it is very important that we donÊt rush this process. We also make sure we always move from concrete to abstract. We have been working hard towards developing our mathematical knowledge and skills, especially focusing on addition. We are still working with numbers from zero to ten. This week we focused on bonds of five; two numbers when added together that will give us the answer five. We loved using play dough, counters and beaded necklaces to assist us with developing this skill. !7 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 !8 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 Something else we are really enjoying is this terms provocation, Roald Dahl. He is turning out to be quite an interesting character himself. Who knew he loved eating prawns, mayonnaise and lettuce for lunch everyday? We really are „learning something new everyday.‰ We have just started exploring his books, and we all look forward to seeing how these stories unfold. Thank you to all the parents who have sent all the interesting Roald Dahl facts and storybooks. What we have noticed about Roald Dahl is his love for transporting the reader to a magical place, like Roald Dahl has said, „A little magic can take you a long way.‰ We are definitely seeing the truth in this statement. !9 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 Grade 2 The grade 2Ês have jumped back into working so quickly and we have begun learning new concepts. In maths we have been practicing how to break down large numbers and explored Mass practically. It was lots of fun to use HarryÊs marbles to compare the mass of different classroom objects. In social science we watched a lovely video on the Amazon jungle, leading from AngeloÊs pod he brought in last term, which is from a tree from the Amazon. While watching the video, it was great to hear new information on the wild life, trees and plants found in and around the Amazon. Harry heard that cocoa beans were grown there, and was quick to explain to everyone that this is what chocolates are made from. !1 0 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 A-J brought in a book about crazy animals. The boys had great fun paging through it and finding the animals they had seen on the video, like the poisonous Dart Frog, chameleons and small monkeys. In Art we have looked at different images of chameleons and at the amazing features these creatures have. We had to draw a chameleon, paying special attention to the small circles on the skin and the different colours that are found together to play tricks on the eye from a distance. !1 1 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 Grade 3 Making Berry Jam PaddingtonÊs love of Marmalade made us curious to process of jam making. Investigating it made us decide to rather make berry jam as Marmalade is a long and difficult process. With the help of BreeÊs Mom and Dad we made a bottle of jam for every household. We weighed and measured the ingredients, and watched as the berries and sugar turned into sweet jam. KianaÊs granny helped us bake scones to enjoy with the jam. Mr. Kuyper tried his with ice-cream as a desert. !1 2 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 MASTERCHEF Italia 2015 The Masterchef Italia competition was one of the highlights of 2014. The 2015 search for the Masterchef in Grade 3 turned out to be even more exciting. All seventeen members of the class showed off their cooking skills in the first round. Sharp knives, blenders and even a ThermoMix were used to impress the judges. Ten were voted into the semifinals, judged by Mrs Meintjes, Shannon and Teacher Luisa. Good luck to the four finalists, Isabella, Bree, Arya and Khumo, who will battle it out in the finals on Tuesday, 5 May 2015 !1 3 29 APR 2015 EDITION 7 Grade 4 We have been hard at work in the Grade 4 classroom this term. We have learnt a great deal in Science - about the structure of plants and animals. The children were allowed to use their iPads to Google and explore animals with a different number of legs, as well as animals that have with feathers, fur or scales. This sparked genuine interest in the classification of animals in general. We then looked at vertebrates and invertebrates. We have been trying to use the iPad as a tool in the classroom, where it is not meant to take over the lesson, but rather enhance and aid the learning. In Afrikaans, we have slowly been building up our vocabulary, and we are now starting to write short sentences. We used Popplet (a brainstorming app on the iPad) to summarise some of the vocabulary learnt. Unfortunately, due to load shedding, not all iPads come to school charged, and in these cases, where Popplet was not used, the good old fashioned brain storming on cardboard has been used. my popplet My broek is oranje africans clothes My hare is swart My armband is rooi.
