Dress and Professional Appearance Policy ‘Expectations for professional dress’ The Denver Discovery School Professional Appearance Policy is designed to promote a professional, safe and respectful school community, and to support an atmosphere that encourages learning. When students make a commitment to dress professionally, they are agreeing to meet or exceed the school’s expectations. Denver Discovery School celebrates individualism and encourages freedom of expression within the parameters of our policy below. The Professional Appearance Policy works to promote a level of professionalism each of our students will need as they continue their careers. When you look at a group of students at Denver Discovery School, it is a powerful visual statement of our community. We appreciate your support. MANDATORY TOPS: 1. DDS collared Polo shirt - short or long sleeved Colors: light blue, navy, white 2. Long sleeved DDS Oxford shirt Colors: light blue Please note that the long sleeved DDS Oxford shirts will be mandatory for certain school events and occasions and so at least one of these shirts should be ordered For such events shirts should also be tucked in. OPTIONAL TOPS: 1. Blazer, DDS sweater vests, DDS cardigan Colors: Navy 2. Peter Pan shirt (Girls only) Colors: light blue, white 3. Short sleeve Oxford blouse (Girls only) Colors: light blue, white 4. DDS sweatshirt Colors: Navy Please note that DDS sweatshirts will not qualify as an alternative to a collared shirt but can be worn over a collared shirt As a student, it is your decision whether or not you feel the need to tuck in your shirt Your mid-section should be covered Your shirt should be an appropriate size – not too small, not too large Ensure outside jacket or personal outerwear other than the DDS sweatshirt is placed in your locker after morning meeting and after lunch/recess MANDATORY BOTTOMS: 1. Pants Colors: Khaki, navy, grey, black Pants should be an appropriate size – not too small, not too large. Shorts and skirts Colors: Khaki, navy, grey, black Length-appropriate (stand, holding arms alongside body, the bottom of shorts and skirts should not be any higher than your fingertips) OPTIONAL BOTTOMS: 1. Leggings May only be worn underneath shorts and skirts of the appropriate length (leggings can be any color) Leggings CANNOT be worn in place of pants during non-Physical Education classes, this includes leggings with pockets ATHLETIC WEAR (Mandatory for PE and athletic sports) 1. Tops: DDS athletic t-shirt Colors: Grey, Green DDS sweatshirts may be worn on top of or in place of the DDS athletic t-shirt 2. Bottoms: DDS mesh shorts Colors: Navy Students may also wear black/grey/navy sweatpants/ yoga pants/ athletic pants/ leggings for physical education class Pants should be an appropriate size – not too small, not too large. Students will be expected to change into a DDS athletic t-shirt and DDS athletic shorts/ athletic pants for PE and, again out of their athletic clothes into their school uniform before heading to their next class CASUAL FRDAYS AT DDS: 1. Tops: Students may choose to wear the DDS spirit shirt (looks like a baseball t-shirt) instead of collared shirts on Fridays only during the school year. 2. Bottoms: Dress code for bottoms remains constant on Fridays. (No jeans please.) Casual Fridays at DDS are new for the 2015-2016 school year. Abuse of this privilege may result in a policy change for the entire school. ACCESSORIES: Acceptable accessories include: Socks/Tights Hair accessories Scarves Closed toed shoes. Athletic shoes are allowed Ties for boys are expected to be worn when DDS oxford shirts are required to be worn Ties for girls are optional DENVER DISCOVERY SCHOOL 3480 SYRACUSE STREET DENVER, CO 80238 T 720-424-4790 HTTP://DENVERDISCOVERYSCHOOL.DPSK12.ORG No hats, hoods, bandanas, do-rags, or sunglasses are to be worn in school at any time CASUAL DRESS OPPORTUNITIES: Students will have opportunities throughout the year to earn casual dress days. Our staff and students will work together to plan two or three times during the school year that are appropriate for ‘dress-down’ days to be earned as a school. Students may also be awarded casual dress days as a reward tied to some behavioral or academic achievement standard. Students will be notified if that is the case. Casual dress or ‚dress down‛ day clothing standards are much the same as a regular day at DDS. Skirts, dresses, and shorts must be at least fingertip length; clothes must fit appropriately; hats are still prohibited, etc. HOW TO ORDER: For all uniform ordering please go through https://www.saiteamsports.com/. The dress code is in effect from the first day of school to the last day of school and from the start of the school day until students have completed all their activities for the day. The faculty and staff of DDS reserve the right to interpret and enforce the student dress code. Students who violate the dress code will be asked to correct the situation immediately, asked to change into appropriate DDS dress clothes, will be required to attend a ‚college prep day‛, or sent home.
