Earth Week
Programs for the Community
Come learn about how the College of Lake County is a Living Laboratory!
Sustainable CLC brings together faculty, staff, students, and other experts to share
ways that we can learn from the world around us during Earth Week. Programs for all
ages encourage interaction with wildlife, landscaping, and local food production.
Programs about our new Green Building Technology and Master Plan will provide
more technical information about how CLC is growing into the future. Activities will
last approximately one hour, unless otherwise noted.

Grayslake Campus Clean-Up

12–1 p.m. and 6–7 p.m.
Join CLC’s Environmental Club and other
clubs for the annual Campus Clean-Up! We
will help spruce up the Grayslake campus
by getting rid of items that have collected
over the winter. Wear clothes and shoes
that can get dirty and bring work gloves.

Receive a useful giveaway and “green”
tips in honor of Earth Week! First come,
first served until supplies last.

Members of the CLC Environmental Club will
talk about composting, seasonal eating and
herb gardens to try at home.
Join a tour of the valuable resources on
CLC’s Grayslake campus: the arboretum,
woodland and sustainable agriculture farm.
We will also look at flowering plants that
depend on pollinators for food production
(see below).

pollinators are. Learn about the services
bees provide us and our Earth. Listen to
what our “beeeeautiful” bio-indicators are
trying to tell us about a crisis right now in
our environment.

Dr. Michael Corn, professor emeritus; and
Rob Carmichael, curator/director of the
Wildlife Discovery Center of Lake Forest and
CLC adjunct instructor
Back by popular demand, Rob Carmichael
and Dr. Michael Corn will present their kidfriendly program, an up-close and personal
introduction to snakes and other reptiles!
They will cover the myths, mysteries and
facts surrounding reptiles. Learn about the
natural history of reptiles as Rob and Mike
introduce different animals, from lizards to
snake species.

From Southlake’s green roofs to a rooftop
food garden, learn how CLC students are
working with consultants to redesign and
replant the green roofs to keep them in tiptop shape and how vegetables aren’t just on
your plate anymore! A drawing for three $50
gift cards (one winner per gift card) will be
held for the Chicago restaurant Uncommon
Ground, the first certified organic roof top
farm in the country.

Trees help moderate climate by providing
shade and processing CO2, but they also
help people feel more connected to the
landscape. Join us to learn about some of
the great trees that thrive in our area.

and over one dozen local food producers
to purchase some of the first greens of the
season. Sign up for the CLC Learning Farm’s
Community Sustained Agriculture (CSA),
learn about worm composting and find out
where else to find locally grown produce
and other locally produced food products.

Join us for our annual campus restoration
day. We will be cutting buckthorn, pulling
garlic mustard and doing other activities to
improve the quality of CLC’s natural areas.
Please wear clothes that can get dirty. While
long-sleeved shirts and pants are suggested,
closed-toed shoes are required. If possible
bring work gloves and water to drink.
Green Building Technology and
Sustainable Master Plan
Learn how the College of Lake County serves as a living laboratory! CLC is breaking ground
on its Sustainable Master Plan this spring by drilling the geothermal field, renovating its
core buildings and constructing a new café facing Willow Lake. New buildings at the
Grayslake and Lakeshore campuses will boast construction elements designed to earn
them a LEED Platinum rating by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Efforts to green our campus and our curriculum
come together with the profession of heating,
air conditioning and ventilation. CLC is
exploring state-of-the-art HVAC systems and
training professionals to install and maintain
them! Learn about our HVAC systems and
the new efficient geothermal system that’s
breaking ground this spring.
