Joe Massie started working in a florist’s
shop aged 14 after spending a day or
two hunting around his home town of
Liverpool for a Saturday job! Within the
first few weeks, he fell in love with the
profession; his mind was made up and he’s
never looked back! A keen competitor,
Joe won the BFA Young Florist of the Year
in 2007 and then represented the UK at
Eurofleurs 2008, won the 2009 Interflora
Florist of the Future, achieved Bronze in
World Skills 2009 in Canada and the title
of RHS Young Florist of the Year (winning
Gold and Best in Show) in 2009, 2010
and 2011.

Even Mark Pampling is not sure how
he turned his back on design aspirations
and embarked upon university studies in
Economics and Psychology. However,
he’s thankful that good sense returned
and he steered back to his current roles
in floral design. Mark became the
Australian Champion in 2003 and was
their representative in the 2004 Interflora
World Cup. He teaches at the North
Coast Institute of TAFE, is an Interflora
Australia accredited judge and is co-owner
of Alstonville Florist and has demonstrated
all around the world. Mark recently
became the 2011 Australian Champion in
a competition which featured his legendary
attention to detail and structural design.
Irene Brockwell’s career as a renowned
floral designer has flourished and evolved
since the day she began – her innovative
and contemporary approach shows that
this evolution still continues, even after
four decades in the flower industry.
Originally from Paisley, Scotland,
Irene packed her design skills when she
relocated to Brisbane, Australia, where she
has built a solid career in floral design.
Irene has veered from her original path
in retail floristry and education is now
her main focus together with a healthy
calendar of demonstrations, judging and
freelance design opportunities.
has been on something best described as
a ‘floral journey’. A past winner of a City
and Guilds Silver Medal - she says it’s the
one and only time she has ever been ‘top of
the class’ - and with her roots in the flower
club culture, Sue went on to be responsible
for organising the NAFAS National Show
for several years. As a competitor, she has
won the full compliment of RHS Chelsea
medals, including Best in Show in 2010.
Now working freelance, she is currently
co-designing a flower festival at Southwark
Cathedral, London in 2012. Structures,
techniques, art-based designs and the
opportunity to ‘continue learning’ are her
passions.
Andy Djati Utomo AIFD is an
internationally acclaimed professional floral
artist and has been in the floral industry
for over 15 years. In 1997 at the age of
20 he won the Indonesian National Floral
Arranging Competition and is now a
leading floral designer in Indonesia. He has
travelled extensively for major floral events
as a demonstrator, lecturer, exhibitor,
judge and designer and this has taken him
to Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand,
China, and Korea. In 2007 he launched
his first book about bridal bouquets. Andy
was awarded the title Fusion Flowers
International Designer of the Year 2011 for
his outstanding and highly creative designs.
Baudouin Roelants has always been interested
in flowers. As a child he experimented with
every material he could put his hands on.
Baudouin trained at art school and taught art
to students of all ages. His first love caught
up with him and he started giving workshops
in floral design, always zigzagging between art
and flowers but combining both and using his
knowledge of all kinds of artistic techniques in
his floral art. He creates his own containers or
transforms others to achieve his needs. From
metal to wool over wool, felt and plastic ...
everything can and will be used. Wedding
designs are his favourite domain. For several
years he designed for Fleur Creatif, and won
both first prizes in the Serax design competition
where his design work can still be found.

When deciding the line up of demonstrators who
would take part in the Blomster magazine celebrations
in Copenhagen, I suspect the clear intention was to
show as much contrast as possible in the work. So far
in this Nordic odyssey we had witnessed two of the
world’s great names in floristry; so just what would
this innovative organisation conjure up next? The
answer was – new talent!
Annette von Einem, although relatively well-known in
Denmark and the Nordic nations for her competition
successes, is not widely recognised on the international stage.
At least that was the case up until her presentation at this
event because her catwalk show brought the audience to
their feet. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that
the representatives of the 14 countries who were present will
view this young designer as a name to watch. Time and again
Annette produced original, exciting concepts and a showcase
aimed at looking at floristry for the ‘fashionista’ amongst us.
The result was an eclectic and sexy catwalk production. A
‘live for today’ concept with some truly exciting designs and
all white on white!
This was a highly theatrical presentation all the more effective
because she effectively shared the stage with another designer
(more of that in a later issue) but instead of featuring her work
on stage, she, like Stein Are Hansen, elected to move the work
out into the audience so they could appreciate it. Clearly the
lady was very serious about her designs but there were slight
touches of humour to be seen too. I, like many of the women
in the audience, will never forget some of the decorated shoes
that the models wore. High heels decorated with feathers,
sequins, beads, pearls and, in some cases, flowers too; strutted
past us moulting a few feathers as they strode past! I swear
some of them looked like hybrid chickens!
There is no question that this presentation upped the
atmosphere. You could feel a shift in the audience as
the models then emerged bedecked in hats, necklaces,
clothes, veils, parasols, handbags and more, to the sound of
contemporary music. It had the WOW! factor in abundance.

Anniversaries are celebrated in many different ways
by many different people, but in the case of the
25th anniversary of the work of Belgian designer,
Stef Adriaenssens; it’s to be celebrated in style. Stef
has invited over 40 designer friends to join him
in creating a celebration exhibition but, as if that
wasn’t enough, he also decided to publish a book
entitled – Beyond Imagination.
This is principally a retrospective collection of this remarkable
designer’s inspirational creations. What a way to celebrate
25 years in business! We have been privileged to receive a
preview of the book to share with our readers which we are
sure you will relish.
Stef ’s designs are highly stylised with a perfect finish, some
of which have appeared in not only Fusion Flowers but other
European magazines. His craftsmanship is wonderful but he
also manages to combine this with a theatrical approach to
presentation and the resulting installations are quite simply
– amazing.
On the other hand, Stef also creates very accessible work too
which certainly puts him right up there in the popularity
stakes. His work ethic is outstanding having battled through
ill health whilst still meeting his commitments. Clearly, this
is a man who is passionate about what he does – and it shows.
This therefore is a book not only about floral design, or even
an anniversary; we see this as a collective design resource
about passion, persistence and perfection. And that is a
wonderful thing.

A Master Christmas
(Modern Floral Christmas Works)

There are those who say that the use of red and green at Christmas is
classical and that there can be nothing new. Here, in an extract from my
latest book are some of my ideas using classical colour combinations and
some different ones too.
Colour conveys emotion. Nothing less than the attractive, dynamic,
colour red is able to arouse such incredible strength of emotion.

Huge lichen wood plate
I used: Lichen wood, Pinus pinea cones, Ivy tendrils, Clematis bark, Rosehip, Smilax
berries, Cornus alba sibirica, Cinnamon sticks, Rods (150cm) and ring (Ø 1m) made
of round iron, Wooden block, 14 gauge wire, Wrapping wire, Decorative wire, Wooden
stars, Tin stars, Glass bead stars, 18 gauge wire, Red wire wool, Glass tubes.
Execution:
Wrap iron ring with bark fibres. Twist double-membrane mesh wire into it. Hammer
iron rods in narrow holes drilled into the wooden block. Attach the ring to the vertical
rods so that they do not slip. Interweave sticks from both sides into the wire mesh or tie
them to it. Tie tubes to the frame. Insert the ivy. Make a dense line of the rest of the
floral and other ornamental materials working from both sides. Wrap a few wire rods
with wire wool and attach.
