If you were to do it again, how would you do things differently?
I would have started developing the vocational and academic projects for
Pi Day sooner. I spent quite a large amount of time on getting pies that I
should have used on the activity development. I would have abandoned the
pies all together and focused on the activities.
What was the overall feedback from the students?
Other than the fact that it was pretty chilly, students were mostly proud to
see the results of the event and the attention from the media. A colleague of
mine in California, who had seen the event on Channel One, contacted me
and commented on how impressive it was.
What have you learned from organizing this school-wide event?
I learned a bit of science. I am seldom told to speak louder and yet many
people told me that they could not hear me. When everyone raised the cards
over their head, it created a sound barrier, blocking my voice out completely
- even with the megaphone!
What did
he say?!

Physically Speaking
An Interview with Physics Teacher, Mr. Dembrow
By Karina Aguiar
What made youstart teaching?
I went from coaching gymnastics to teaching. At
my old gym, I became friends with many teachers.
It piqued my interest and at the
time it seemed like an exciting
thing to try out. So I became a
teacher soon after meeting some
teachers at my gym.
Any crazy stories?
I was hired at a new school years ago. It was an
international school that accepted students from
all backgrounds. At the beginning of
the first class day, I gave my introduction speech, as every teacher does on
the first day. Ten minutes into class, I
started to ask the students questions,
but never received any answers. Fast
When did you know you had a

The rocket was one that my
father and his team worked hard to create. I was so and as it turns out, they were all from 17 different

language groups for the students to work in and
studying physics.
used more physical demonstrations to help cross
the obvious language barrier.

A Man of Many Hats
An Interview with Diman Hockey Star:
Jay “Silky Mittens” Silva – Senior in the Metal Fabrication & Welding Shop
When did you first start playing hockey?
I played when I was three – street hockey with family
and then ice hockey in Fall River. My first coach was
“Uncle Bob.” The team name was, I think maybe the
"Senators,” at age 3 or 4. Believe it or not, they make
hockey skates that size. I saved one of my first pairs!
Who influenced you to play?
My dad and my brother. My dad was a Diman grad,
we won’t say what year, but I don’t think there was a
Diman hockey team at the time. My brother played for
Durfee.
What was your most memorable game?
I’d have to say scoring my 100th point and winning the
Mayflower Conference in the same game. The game
was played against Southeastern (February 2014) at
home.
What was your worst moment /best learning moment?
Playing for the State Championship on the Barnstable
Red Raiders (AAA U18) in Fall 2014 and we lost in
double overtime.
Work Hard
Who is your favorite athlete?
Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks forward
What are your future plans after high school?
Play junior hockey while attending community college.
I haven’t decided on what my major would be, but as
far as hockey goes, I’m hoping to move on to play division 1 college.
Jay finished off his year with his highest goal
count – 55 goals and 22 assists! We believe this
deserves the state MVP nomination as he was
first in the state – for all divisions in scoring.
He also became the all-time leading scorer at
Diman with 112 goals and 65 assists, for a total
of 176 points!

RIPPER
Ripper, by Stephan Petrucha, is an enthralling mystery novel set in nineteenth century New York City.
The book follows Carver Young, an orphan determined to become a detective and discover the secret
of his dark origins. Carver will do whatever it takes to
find his father and, along with other childhood friends,
he will try to take down the most famous serial killer
the world has ever known.
Book Review
By Elijah J. Fullerton
Ripper is a great novel that I would recommend to
any fan of historical fiction. It features an intriguing
mystery that will leave you theorizing at every turn.
The story shows off an amazing assortment of contraptions and gizmos, ranging from a pneumatic elevator all the way to an electric carriage! However, the
best asset Ripper has is its colorful cast. Between the
thundering commissioner, by the name of Teddy Roosevelt, and solemn Pinkerton agents, you will come to
love each character you encounter.
In conclusion Ripper is a fantastic mystery novel that
I would recommend to lovers of historical fiction and
mystery alike.
Note: the Diman library has
one copy of Ripper available
to borrow, so get down there
quickly to give it a read.
